As Vladimir Putin begins his third term as Russian president, we ask if Russia can become a superpower once again.
President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday ordered construction sped up on a multi-billion-dollar spaceport in Russia's Far East that he said would break reliance on the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan and launch future missions to the Moon and Mars.
Putin flew in a helicopter over the sprawling building site in Vostochny at a time when conflict with Ukraine, maker of Zenit and Dnepr rockets, is highlighting the fragility of Russia's dependence on former Soviet republics in defense and space.
Building a new launchpad on its own soil is central to Putin's effort to reform a once-pioneering space industry hobbled by years of budget cuts and a brain drain in the 1990s.
"Our own space infrastructure and modern network of cosmodromes ... will allow Russia to strengthen its standing as a leading space superpower and guarantee the independence of space activities," Putin said at Vostochny, near Russia's border with China.
Taking to task officials, Putin said construction was lagging behind by up to three months and the 6,000 workers currently at the site was half the number it should be.
"In the future, the capacity of the cosmodrome will be expanded ... to be used to realize program to explore the Moon, Mars and other space objects," he said.
Russia has already ploughed some 100 billion roubles into construction of the new spaceport, Putin said, to replace the Baikonur site that it has leased from Kazakhstan since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Another 50 billion roubles is earmarked for the project through 2015, he said, hefty spending for a budget strained by the cost of annexing Ukraine's Crimea region and an economy stuttering under Western sanctions.
Despite Russia's current financial woes, a senior official tasked with overseeing the space industry vowed the country would not back down from investment in space.

The President of the Russian Federation (Russian: Президент Российской Федерации Prezident Rossijskoj Federatsii) is the head of state, supreme commander-in-chief and holder of the highest office within the Russian Federation. Despite the fact that the Constitution of Russia does not explicitly determine the President as the head of the executive branch, executive power is de facto split between the President and the Prime Minister, who is the head of government. The current president of Russia is Vladimir Putin.
Before 25 December 1991 the head of state was known as the President of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (Russian: Президент Российской Советской Федеративной Социалистической Республики).
The Constitution of Russia also restricts the period during which a person can hold the office of the President to two consecutive terms. There is no limit to the total number of terms that a President may serve, just a limit on successive terms.
The election of the President is mainly regulated by the Presidential Election Law (PEL) and the Basic Guarantees of Electoral Rights (BGL). The President is elected in a two-round system every six years, with a two term limitation. If no candidate wins an absolute majority in the first round, a second election round is held between the two leading candidates. The last presidential election was in 2012, and the next is expected in 2018.

listen); born 7 October 1952) is a Russian politician who has been the President of Russia since 7 May 2012. Putin previously served as President from 2000 to 2008 and as Prime Minister of Russia from 1999 to 2000, and again from 2008 to 2012. Putin also serves as chairman of United Russia and Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Union of Russia and Belarus. He became acting President on 31 December 1999, when president Boris Yeltsin resigned in a surprising move. Putin won the 2000 presidential election; in 2004 he was re-elected for a second term lasting until 7 May 2008.
Because of constitutionally mandated term limits, Putin was ineligible to run for a third consecutive presidential term. After his successor Dmitry Medvedev won the 2008 presidential election, Putin was nominated by Medvedev to be Russia's Prime Minister; Putin took office on 8 May 2008 and a period of so-called "tandemocracy" followed. In September 2011, Putin and Medvedev agreed he should seek a third, non-consecutive term in the 2012 presidential election, which he won in the first round on 4 March 2012.

As Vladimir Putin begins his third term as Russian president, we ask if Russia can become a superpower once again.
President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday ordered construction sped up on a multi-billion-dollar spaceport in Russia's Far East that he said would break reliance on the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan and launch future missions to the Moon and Mars.
Putin flew in a helicopter over the sprawling building site in Vostochny at a time when conflict with Ukraine, maker of Zenit and Dnepr rockets, is highlighting the fragility of Russia's dependence on former Soviet republics in defense and space.
Building a new launchpad on its own soil is central to Putin's effort to reform a once-pioneering space industry hobbled by years of budget cuts and a brain drain in the 1990s.
"Our own space infrastructure and modern network of cosmodromes ... will allow Russia to strengthen its standing as a leading space superpower and guarantee the independence of space activities," Putin said at Vostochny, near Russia's border with China.
Taking to task officials, Putin said construction was lagging behind by up to three months and the 6,000 workers currently at the site was half the number it should be.
"In the future, the capacity of the cosmodrome will be expanded ... to be used to realize program to explore the Moon, Mars and other space objects," he said.
Russia has already ploughed some 100 billion roubles into construction of the new spaceport, Putin said, to replace the Baikonur site that it has leased from Kazakhstan since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Another 50 billion roubles is earmarked for the project through 2015, he said, hefty spending for a budget strained by the cost of annexing Ukraine's Crimea region and an economy stuttering under Western sanctions.
Despite Russia's current financial woes, a senior official tasked with overseeing the space industry vowed the country would not back down from investment in space.

Mr Putin donned a traditional dogi (DOH-GEE) before settling down for a bout of the Japanese martial art of judo.

00.02 After two days of tough talking Vladimir Putin was ready to indulge in something a little more physical on Tuesday.
The Russian hardman is a keen practitioner of judo.
He first learnt the Japanese martial art while in the K-G-B, and now has a black belt.
His trip to Japan gave him the chance to hone his skills.
First up was a Judo instructor.
Putin seemed more than equal to the task.

00.31 Prime Minister Mori clearly enjoyed the bout.
But with the two leaders still disagreeing over a territorial dispute, he would've been more pleased by the performance of Putin's next opponent.

00.46 The two-day summit was the latest in a series of efforts to overcome decades of mistrust between the countries.
The talks failed to decide the future of four Russian-controlled islands which Japan claims as its own.
The islands - known as the Kurils in Russia and as the Northern Territories in Japan - stand in the way of a peace treaty which would formally end more than 50 years of hostility.
But the two sides did manage to sign agreements on trade and regional security.
Putin also invited Mori for a return visit, before leaving Japan to head for New York and the U-N millennium summit.

These days, you won't find a Russian-made car in the Russian president's motorcade, but at one time, the country's leaders used to ride around exclusively in individual armored limousines produced in Russia. Since manufacturing began in the 1930s, these cars have always been at the Moscow ZIL factory ('ZIL' stands for Zavod imeni Likhachova, "Factory named after Likhachov").

Russian President Vladimir Putin was greeted by Indian leaders in an official ceremony on Wednesday.
Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and President APJ Abdul Kalam met the Russian leader at the President's residence.
Russian President Vladimir Putin was meeting Indian leaders and businessmen on Wednesday to map out joint efforts against global terrorism and reinvigorate economic ties.
Talks will also focus on Iraq and military cooperation.
Putin could encourage India, Russia's longtime Asian ally, to join Moscow and Beijing in a strategic triad to balance power with the United States.
The Russian leader was accorded a 21-gun salute at a welcoming reception.
He told reporters afterwards: "Our task is to put a halt to terrorism in the world as a whole and in the regions most sensitive to us."
The Russian leader arrived in the Indian capital on Tuesday night after a state visit to China, where the two countries signed a declaration calling for a "multipolar world" - a phrase that expresses discontent with US global dominance.
Putin and Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee were expected to sign a similar declaration on Wednesday.

The Russian leader arrived in the Indian capital on Tuesday night after a state visit to China, where the two countries signed a declaration calling for a "multipolar world" - a phrase that expresses discontent with US global dominance.
Putin and Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee were expected to sign a similar declaration on Wednesday.

During Putin's first presidency, the Russian economy grew for eight straight years and GDP measured in purchasing power increased 72% The growth was a result of the 2000s commodities boom, high oil prices, and prudent economic and fiscal policies. The economy began to experience difficulties with the arrival of the global economic crisis of 2008-2009, falling oil prices and, beginning in 2014, Western sanctions imposed after Russia's annexation of Crimea and military intervention in Eastern Ukraine, with GDP shrinking by 3.7% in 2015.
Putin has enjoyed very high domestic approval ratings throughout his career, particularly following the annexation of Crimea in 2014. In 2007, he was Time Magazine's Person of the Year, and in 2004, 2008, 2014, and 2015, he was placed on its 100 Most Influential People in the World list. In 2013, 2014, and 2015, he was designated #1 on the Forbes List of The World's Most Powerful People.
In 2015, The Economist magazine's Democracy Index classified Russia as "authoritarian", ranking it 132nd out of 167 countries.

He moved to Moscow in 1996 and joined President Boris Yeltsin's administration, rising quickly through the ranks and becoming Acting President on 31 December 1999, when Yeltsin resigned. Putin won the subsequent 2000 presidential election by a 52% to 30% margin, thus avoiding a runoff with his Communist Party opponent, Gennady Zyuganov. He was reelected President in 2004 with 72% of the vote.
Because of constitutionally mandated term limits, Putin was ineligible to run for a third consecutive presidential term in 2008. The 2008 presidential election was won by Dmitry Medvedev, who appointed Putin Prime Minister, beginning a period of so-called "tandemocracy".In September 2011, after presidential terms were extended from four to six years, Putin announced he would seek a third term as president. He won the March 2012 presidential election with 64% of the vote, a result which aligned with pre-election polling.[5] Opposition groups accused Putin and his United Russia party of fraud.
During Putin's first presidency, the Russian economy grew for eight straight years and GDP measured in purchasing power increased 72% The growth was a result of the 2000s commodities boom, high oil prices, and prudent economic and fiscal policies. The economy began to experience difficulties with the arrival of the global economic crisis of 2008-2009, falling oil prices and, beginning in 2014, Western sanctions imposed after Russia's annexation of Crimea and military intervention in Eastern Ukraine, with GDP shrinking by 3.7% in 2015.
Putin has enjoyed very high domestic approval ratings throughout his career, particularly following the annexation of Crimea in 2014. In 2007, he was Time Magazine's Person of the Year, and in 2004, 2008, 2014, and 2015, he was placed on its 100 Most Influential People in the World list. In 2013, 2014, and 2015, he was designated #1 on the Forbes List of The World's Most Powerful People.
In 2015, The Economist magazine's Democracy Index classified Russia as "authoritarian", ranking it 132nd out of 167 countries.

Following Chemezov’s remark, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan said Iran has purchased as many S-300 missile defense batteries as it needs, adding that Iranian forces are currently undergoing training in Russia on the missile system.
In April 2015, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a presidential decree paving the way for the long-overdue delivery of the missile defense system to Iran. The decision to deliver the system came after Iran and the P5+1 group of countries - the United States, France, Britain, China and Russia plus Germany - reached a mutual understanding on Tehran’s nuclear program in the Swiss city of Lausanne on April 2, 2015.

Vladimir Putin has apologised for erroneously claiming that German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung was owned by the US bank Goldman Sachs.
The Russian president made the remark in a televised phone-in on Thursday.
It concerned who was responsible for the publication of the so-called Panama Papers, which were leaked to Sueddeutsche Zeitung and revealed massive international tax evasion.
In an apology issued by the Kremlin, Mr Putin said he was misinformed by aides.
"It is more the error of those who prepared the briefing documents, my error," Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesman, told reporters.
"There was information there that had not been checked and rechecked again and we gave it to the president. We have apologised [to the bank] and we will also apologise to the publication."
The Panama Papers, which contained the names of people allegedly involved in tax evasion schemes, revealed a number of offshore companies owned by close associates of Mr Putin.
Mr Putin has denied "any element of corruption" over the schemes, saying his opponents are trying to destabilise Russia.

As Vladimir Putin begins his third term as Russian president, we ask if Russia can become a superpower once again.
President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday ordered construction sped up on a multi-billion-dollar spaceport in Russia's Far East that he said would break reliance on the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan and launch future missions to the Moon and Mars.
Putin flew in a helicopter over the sprawling building site in Vostochny at a time when conflict with Ukraine, maker of Zenit and Dnepr rockets, is highlighting the fragility of Russia's dependence on former Soviet republics in defense and space.
Building a new launchpad on its own soil is central to Putin's effort to reform a once-pioneering space industry hobbled by years of budget cuts and a brain drain in the 1990s.
"Our own space infrastructure and modern network of cosmodromes ... will allow Russia to strengthen its standing as a leading space superpower and guarantee the independence of space activities," Putin said at Vostochny, near Russia's border with China.
Taking to task officials, Putin said construction was lagging behind by up to three months and the 6,000 workers currently at the site was half the number it should be.
"In the future, the capacity of the cosmodrome will be expanded ... to be used to realize program to explore the Moon, Mars and other space objects," he said.
Russia has already ploughed some 100 billion roubles into construction of the new spaceport, Putin said, to replace the Baikonur site that it has leased from Kazakhstan since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Another 50 billion roubles is earmarked for the project through 2015, he said, hefty spending for a budget strained by the cost of annexing Ukraine's Crimea region and an economy stuttering under Western sanctions.
Despite Russia's current financial woes, a senior official tasked with overseeing the space industry vowed the country would not back down from investment in space.

The President-elect swore an oath of loyalty to the Russian people and was officially declared head of state by President of the Constitutional Court Valery Zorkin.
Approximately 3,000 people were invited to attend the ceremony, including members of the Russian Federation Government, State Duma deputies and members of the Federation Council, Constitutional Court judges, and representatives of other federal bodies of state power.
Members of Vladimir Putin's presidential election campaign team and campaign headquarters, other candidates in the 2012 presidential election, heads of diplomatic missions, members of the clergy, academic and cultural figures, art workers and public figures also attended the event. The Presidential Regiment then marked Mr Putin's inauguration with a parade on the Kremlin's Cathedral Square. The regiment celebrates the 76th anniversary of its founding that day.

Putin is currently Prime Minister of Russia and as of the 2012 election, he is also the President-elect. He became acting President on 31 December 1999, when president Boris Yeltsin resigned in a surprising move. Putin won the 2000 presidential election; in 2004 he was re-elected for a second term lasting until 7 May 2008.
Because of constitutionally mandated term limits, Putin was ineligible to run for a third consecutive presidential term. After his successor Dmitry Medvedev won the 2008 presidential election, Putin was nominated by Medvedev to be Russia's Prime Minister; Putin took office on 8 May 2008 and a period of so-called "tandemocracy" followed. In September 2011, Putin and Medvedev agreed he should seek a third, non-consecutive term in the 2012 presidential election, which he won in the first round on 4 March 2012.
Putin has overseen a return of political stability and economic progress to Russia, ending the crisis of the 1990s. During his presidency, the Russian economy grew for nine straight years, seeing GDP increase by 72% in PPP (sixfold in nominal), poverty decrease by more than 50%, and average monthly salaries increase from $80 to $640. These achievements have been ascribed by analysts to strong macroeconomic management, important fiscal policy reforms, a confluence of high oil prices, surging capital inflows and access to low-cost external financing. The fast formation of the modern middle class in the country, the 2.3 times increase in real incomes between 2000-2011 as well as improvements in healthcare and public order allowed Russia to achieve the highest level of life expectancy in its history.
As Russia's President, Putin passed into law a flat income tax of 13%, a reduced profits tax, and new land and legal codes. As Prime Minister, Putin oversaw large scale military reform and police reform. His energy policy has affirmed Russia's position as an energy superpower. Putin established a number of national champions, i.e. state corporations which oversaw the restoration of high-tech industries in the country (such as nuclear industry and defence industry). Significant rise in foreign investments contributed to the boom in such sectors as automotive industry. Economic megaprojects which Putin endorsed have included the construction of major export pipelines (notably ESPO, Nord Stream and BPS-2), the restoration of the global satellite navigation system GLONASS, and the building of infrastructure for top level international events held in Russia (2006 G8 Summit, APEC 2012, and multiple sporting events).
Putin's leadership has enjoyed considerable popularity in Russia with continuously high approval ratings, though some of his actions have been criticized by Western observers and domestic opposition as undemocratic. In the media Putin often projects an outdoor, sporting, tough guy image, demonstrating his physical capabilities and taking part in unusual or dangerous activities, such as extreme sports or carefully staged interactions with wild animals. A keen practitioner of martial arts and several times Champion of Leningrad in judo and sambo in his youth, Putin has played a major role in development of sport in Russia, notably, helping Sochi to win the bid for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

In September 2011, Putin and Medvedev agreed he should seek a third, non-consecutive term in the 2012 presidential election, which he won in the first round on 4 March 2012.
Putin has overseen a return of political stability and economic progress to Russia, ending the crisis of the 1990s. During his presidency, the Russian economy grew for nine straight years, seeing GDP increase by 72% in PPP (sixfold in nominal), poverty decrease by more than 50%, and average monthly salaries increase from $80 to $640. These achievements have been ascribed by analysts to strong macroeconomic management, important fiscal policy reforms, a confluence of high oil prices, surging capital inflows and access to low-cost external financing. The fast formation of the modern middle class in the country, the 2.3 times increase in real incomes between 2000-2011 as well as improvements in healthcare and public order allowed Russia to achieve the highest level of life expectancy in its history.
As Russia's President, Putin passed into law a flat income tax of 13%, a reduced profits tax, and new land and legal codes. As Prime Minister, Putin oversaw large scale military reform and police reform. His energy policy has affirmed Russia's position as an energy superpower. Putin established a number of national champions, i.e. state corporations which oversaw the restoration of high-tech industries in the country (such as nuclear industry and defence industry). Significant rise in foreign investments contributed to the boom in such sectors as automotive industry. Economic megaprojects which Putin endorsed have included the construction of major export pipelines (notably ESPO, Nord Stream and BPS-2), the restoration of the global satellite navigation system GLONASS, and the building of infrastructure for top level international events held in Russia (2006 G8 Summit, APEC 2012, and multiple sporting events).
Putin's leadership has enjoyed considerable popularity in Russia with continuously high approval ratings, though some of his actions have been criticized by Western observers and domestic opposition as undemocratic. In the media Putin often projects an outdoor, sporting, tough guy image, demonstrating his physical capabilities and taking part in unusual or dangerous activities, such as extreme sports or carefully staged interactions with wild animals. A keen practitioner of martial arts and several times Champion of Leningrad in judo and sambo in his youth, Putin has played a major role in development of sport in Russia, notably, helping Sochi to win the bid for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Putin has been compared to Hitler for a variety of reasons, one because he won't allow the West to meddle in Russian affairs and try to change the political and social climate through "democratic revolutions" or challenging authority through "human right campaigns" aimed at legalizing homosexual Gay Pride parades which outrage the people, but mostly because he revived his country out of the rubble that Jewish Bolshevism created, which even Putin himself admits was Jewish:
