(With Permission) in Ashland Peeps: Since a visual is worth 1000 words, this is a chance for everyone to see the true fall-out of these ordinances on the homeless and travelers coming through Ashland. Essentially, they are a tool to clear the homeless out of town and this is how it happens. Police approach the homeless over a seemingly small thing, in this case, a homeless traveler has his dog with him while sitting in the plaza. He was approached by a police officer and told he could not have his dog with him. The homeless person informed the officer that his dog was a service dog and allowed in public places. The officer told the homeless man he didn't believe it was a service dog and proceeded to write him a ticket. This exchange was not caught on this video and you only see the tail end of that exchange. What you are about to see is another homeless traveler named Redwood who begins to speak up in defense of the homeless person with the dog. Redwood is on the Aspberger's spectrum of autism and has a very keen mind and has studied some Federal law. He is trying to inform the officer that he is violating Federal law by harassing and ticketing a disabled person with a service dog. You will hear a lot of loud swearing, which is ubiquitous to street culture, but you see Redwood keep walking away from the officer and not trying to be threatening. As the police call in more police, the first traveler says he is afraid for his safety because he has been beaten up by police in 3 different cities and he leaves the scene. He is later arrested by a group of police while exiting a port 'o potty and charged with various criminal charges, including a class C felony of "escaping." Meanwhile, Redwood's muscles have locked up, which is a part of an autistic reaction to stress, fear and anger. He sits down peacefully and then you see him being forcefully arrested by a group of police that has been called in, on charges of "disturbing the peace," "interfering with an officer," and "resisting arrest". He is a peaceful person who describes himself on a spiritual journey, and is constantly helping other people out. Please be aware you are witnessing what a hidden policy of discrimination looks like. Innocent people, just trying to sit in the downtown are being turned into criminals over nothing. There are two video clips, I will post both. Unfortunately, the filmer cut out a part where an officer pokes Redwood in the chest multiple times, however she witnessed it in person. The police chief said I was welcome to review body cam footage with him as long as it wasn't involved in a pending criminal case.
