Last summer, Americans were stunned by images of children and families from Central America turning themselves in at the US-Mexico border. More migrants are now coming from the Honduran city of San Pedro Sula and surrounding areas than anywhere else in Central America. The society there has yet to recover from a 2009 coup that crippled the economy and unleashed extreme levels of violence and inequality.
In our latest episode of Immigrant America, VICE News traveled to San Pedro Sula — the most violent and second largest city in Honduras — to find out why so many families and young people are risking it all to migrate illegally to the US.

Honduras is a republic in Central America. It was at times referred to as Spanish Honduras to differentiate it from British Honduras, which became the modern-day state of Belize. The country is bordered to the west by Guatemala, to the southwest by El Salvador, to the southeast by Nicaragua, to the south by the Pacific Ocean at the Gulf of Fonseca, and to the north by the Gulf of Honduras, a large inlet of the Caribbean Sea.
Honduras was home to several important indigenous cultures, most notably the Maya. Much of the country was conquered by Spain who introduced its predominant language and many of its customs in the sixteenth century. It became independent in 1821 and has been a republic since the end of Spanish rule.
Its size is just over 112,492 km² with an estimated population of almost eight million. Its capital is Tegucigalpa. Its northern portions are part of the Western Caribbean Zone.
It is notable for its production of minerals, tropical fruit, and recently for exportation of clothing for the international market.

Honduras has become the newest front in the US war on drugs in Latin America. The US has provided financial support for both the police and the military there in spite of its deep corruption issues.
Furthermore, members of both institutions have been linked to a range of killings. Political dissidents, human rights workers and members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community have all been killed at alarming rates.
In May, a mission in the Moskitia region, which was led by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), left four innocent civilians killed and four others wounded. It was followed by two more incidents where a US DEA agent shot and killed an alleged drug trafficker. Local communities have demanded a thorough investigation but so far nothing has been done.
The US has a long and controversial history in Honduras. In the 1980s, the US built a base there and trained an elite Honduran military unit. That unit went on to carry out tortures, kidnappings and killings.
Who is responsible? What should be the role of the US in Honduras? And what happened that night in the Moskitia when a US raid ended up leaving innocent people dead?

Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders will meet Thursday in Brooklyn for their first debate in over a month. We begin today’s show looking at Hillary Clinton and Honduras. Earlier this week, the former secretary of state publicly defended her role in the 2009 coup in Honduras that ousted democratically elected President Manuel Zelaya. Since the coup, Honduras has become one of the most violent places in the world. Clinton was asked about Honduras during a meeting with the New York Daily News editorial board on Saturday. The question was posed by Democracy Now!’s own Juan González.

It may seem like the last place on earth where businesses would want to invest, and people would want to move.
But there's a new idea about to be tried in Honduras.
Some call it a Startup City or Free City, others a LEAP Zone, and in Honduran law it's known as a ZEDE. They are politically autonomous, privately run zones that supporters believe could transform not only Honduras, but the entire developing world.
In "Company Towns," the second episode in a four-part series, Honduran citizens explain how experiments in governance have already transformed parts of their country: There's Los Castaños, a residential project underwritten by a business hoping to provide safe housing for its workers and offers them equity in the land and private security, as well as enforcing its own codes of conduct. Or there's Altia Business Park, which provides a clear contrast between privately managed land and the giant squatter's village sitting on the government-managed land across from it.
"In San Pedro, there is no place to go that is safe," says Lordes Hernandez, a resident of Los Castaños, where she's lived more than year. "These are the first safe neighborhoods in Honduras."

My trip to Honduras ( travel advice )
I took a trip down to Honduras in Central America to visit a few friends. I have been to central and south America more than a few times and Honduras is the best place I have visited in my travels thru that region for sure!. It is not as bad as most people think! Like most places you visit in life you have to do your homework and know where and where not to go! There is always a bad part of town where ever you go, but as long as you are respectful and watch your six, you will be ok, Its just common sense stuff. Just mind you P&Qs; and don't think you're some kind of a big shot and flash your cash. because your cash does go a long way in Honduras.for sure! If you can do that and you will have a great time. I took a trip down to Honduras in Central America to visit a few friends. I have been to central and south America more than a few times and Honduras is the best place I have visited in my travels thru that region for sure!. It is not as bad as most people think! Like most places you visit in life you have to do your homework and know where and where not to go! There is always a bad part of town where ever you go, but as long as you are respectful and watch your six, you will be ok, Its just common sense stuff. Just mind you P&Qs; and don't think you're some kind of a big shot and flash your cash. because your cash does go a long way in Honduras.for sure! If you can do that and you will have a great time. While I was there I had to visit the Mayan temple ruins in Copan, The surrounding area around the ruins is very beautiful to say the least, and the Mayan ruins are very impressive and the carvings on the statues are incredible. We had a great time wandering around the ruins on our trip for sure. Its worth the trip to Copan if you're ever in Honduras, It just may be the highlight of your trip. I will post a video later of my trip to Copan. Thanks for viewing my video, I hope you enjoyed it.

Honduras seems to come with a lot of travel warnings, but that didn't stop Macca and Brianna from travelling there and seeing it for themselves.
What they discovered was that you can enjoy Honduras for what it is - a beautiful lush country full of people who want to share the little that they have and their stories too.
In this episode Macca and Brianna hike through the rainforest of El Mochito to the Three Waterfalls, splash around in the water of Lake Yojoa, and jump off the world's highest bridge (possibly).

Honduras seems to come with a lot of travel warnings, but that didn't stop Macca and Brianna from travelling there and seeing it for themselves.
What they discovered was that you can enjoy Honduras for what it is - a beautiful lush country full of people who want to share the little that they have and their stories too.
In this episode Macca and Brianna hike through the rainforest of El Mochito to the Three Waterfalls, splash around in the water of Lake Yojoa, and jump off the world's highest bridge (possibly).
Next up, we're heading to El Salvador where we're going to kick back and relax West Coast style.
