As Donald Trump continues to steamroll his way through the GOP primary, pundits have begun to compare his rise, and what some see as an inevitable fall, to failed presidential candidate Barry Goldwater.
But is it an apt comparison? Let's take a look at the evidence.
Goldwater was seen by some as an extremist fringe candidate; someone who was disliked by GOP party leaders and the establishment but somehow was able to galvanize the Republican base around his candidacy during the 1964 primary. Sounds familiar doesn't it? But the similarities don't stop there.
To this day, Goldwater has been criticized for playing on the fears of the electorate. As New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller famously said, "The Republican Party must repudiate these people," when talking about Goldwater and his supporters. And Goldwater, like Trump, also received a strong endorsement from a KKK figure, which critics jumped all over.
So yes, the parallels make a comparison pretty simple, but for members of the #NeverTrump, it could also be wishful thinking.
Goldwater was decimated in the general election against Lyndon B. Johnson. Johnson received a historic 61 percent of the popular vote and won 486 electoral college votes compared to Goldwater's 52.
But it's actually not as easy to say Trump would fare as badly as Goldwater in a general election.
Yes, hypothetical polls have both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders beating Trump in a November general. But Trump has proven himself to not only play the brash yelling billionaire but also the serious general election candidate.
"We want to put that same ability into doing something for our nation. Our nation is in serious trouble," Trump said.
Trump's Super Tuesday speech was more moderate and calm than the candidate usually is; possible proof he's already anticipating moving toward the center during a general election.
And based on Trump's swath of wins in primaries and caucuses, his support isn't as one-sided as you'd think. Virginia, a state with typically moderate Republicans, went to Trump on Super Tuesday. And the myth that Trump can only win with poorly educated voters has also been broken in states including Massachusetts and Tennessee, where he ran the table with all education levels.
So trying to predict Trump's demise is a fruitless exercise. If he's proven one thing this election season, it's that history isn't really telling us much of anything.

Barry Morris Goldwater (January 2, 1909 – May 29, 1998) was a businessman and five-term United States Senator from Arizona (1953–65, 1969–87) and the Republican Party's nominee for president in the 1964 election.
Goldwater is the politician most often credited for sparking the resurgence of the American conservative political movement in the 1960s. He also had a substantial impact on the libertarian movement.
Goldwater rejected the legacy of the New Deal and fought through the conservative coalition against the New Deal coalition. He mobilized a large conservative constituency to win the hard-fought Republican primaries. Goldwater's conservative campaign platform ultimately failed to gain the support of the electorate[3] and he lost the 1964 presidential election to incumbent Democrat Lyndon B. Johnson by one of the largest landslides in history, bringing down many Republican candidates as well. The Johnson campaign and other critics painted him as a reactionary, while supporters praised his crusades against the Soviet Union, labor unions, and the welfare state. His defeat allowed Johnson and the Democrats in Congress to pass the Great Society programs, but the defeat of so many older Republicans in 1964 also cleared the way for a younger generation of American conservatives to mobilize. Goldwater was much less active as a national leader of conservatives after 1964; his supporters mostly rallied behind Ronald Reagan, who became governor of California in 1967 and the 40th President of the United States in 1981.
Goldwater returned to the Senate in 1969, and specialized in defense policy, bringing to the table his experience as a senior officer in the Air Force Reserve. In 1974, as an elder statesman of the party, Goldwater successfully urged President Richard Nixon to resign when evidence of a cover-up in the Watergate scandal became overwhelming and impeachment was imminent. By the 1980s, the increasing influence of the Christian right on the Republican Party so conflicted with Goldwater's views that he became a vocal opponent of the religious right on issues such as abortion, gay rights, and the role of religion in public life. After narrowly winning re-election to the Senate in 1980, he chose not to run for a fifth term in 1986, and was succeeded by fellow Republican John McCain. A significant accomplishment in his career was the passage of the Goldwater–Nichols Act of 1986, which restructured the higher levels of the Pentagon by placing the chain of command from the President to the Secretary of Defense directly to the commanders of the Unified Combatant Commands.

In 2010, Trump expressed an interest in becoming a candidate for President of the United States in the 2012 election. Ronald Ernest "Ron" Paul (born August 20, 1935) is an American politician who has been the U.S. Representative for Texas's 14th congressional district, which includes Galveston, since 1997, and a three-time candidate for President of the United States, as a Libertarian in 1988 and as a Republican in 2008 and currently 2012. He is an outspoken critic of American foreign and monetary policies, including the Military–industrial complex and the Federal Reserve, and is known for his libertarian-leaning views, often differing from his own party on certain issues.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Paul is a graduate of Gettysburg College and Duke University School of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree. He served as a medical officer in the United States Air Force from 1963 until 1968. He worked as an obstetrician-gynecologist from the 1960s to the 1980s, delivering more than 4,000 babies. He became the first Representative in history to serve concurrently with a child in the Senate when his son Rand Paul was elected to the United States Senate for Kentucky in 2010.

As Donald Trump continues to steamroll his way through the GOP primary, pundits have begun to compare his rise, and what some see as an inevitable fall, to failed presidential candidate Barry Goldwater.
But is it an apt comparison? Let's take a look at the evidence.
Goldwater was seen by some as an extremist fringe candidate; someone who was disliked by GOP party leaders and the establishment but somehow was able to galvanize the Republican base around his candidacy during the 1964 primary. Sounds familiar doesn't it? But the similarities don't stop there.
To this day, Goldwater has been criticized for playing on the fears of the electorate. As New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller famously said, "The Republican Party must repudiate these people," when talking about Goldwater and his supporters. And Goldwater, like Trump, also received a strong endorsement from a KKK figure, which critics jumped all over.
So yes, the parallels make a comparison pretty simple, but for members of the #NeverTrump, it could also be wishful thinking.
Goldwater was decimated in the general election against Lyndon B. Johnson. Johnson received a historic 61 percent of the popular vote and won 486 electoral college votes compared to Goldwater's 52.
But it's actually not as easy to say Trump would fare as badly as Goldwater in a general election.
Yes, hypothetical polls have both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders beating Trump in a November general. But Trump has proven himself to not only play the brash yelling billionaire but also the serious general election candidate.
"We want to put that same ability into doing something for our nation. Our nation is in serious trouble," Trump said.
Trump's Super Tuesday speech was more moderate and calm than the candidate usually is; possible proof he's already anticipating moving toward the center during a general election.
And based on Trump's swath of wins in primaries and caucuses, his support isn't as one-sided as you'd think. Virginia, a state with typically moderate Republicans, went to Trump on Super Tuesday. And the myth that Trump can only win with poorly educated voters has also been broken in states including Massachusetts and Tennessee, where he ran the table with all education levels.
So trying to predict Trump's demise is a fruitless exercise. If he's proven one thing this election season, it's that history isn't really telling us much of anything.

Johnson by one of the largest landslides in history, bringing down many Republican candidates as well. The Johnson campaign and other critics painted him as a reactionary, while supporters praised his crusades against the Soviet Union, labor unions, and the welfare state. His defeat allowed Johnson and the Democrats in Congress to pass the Great Society programs, but the defeat of so many older Republicans in 1964 also cleared the way for a younger generation of American conservatives to mobilize. Goldwater was much less active as a national leader of conservatives after 1964; his supporters mostly rallied behind Ronald Reagan, who became governor of California in 1967 and the 40th President of the United States in 1981.
Goldwater returned to the Senate in 1969, and specialized in defense policy, bringing to the table his experience as a senior officer in the Air Force Reserve. In 1974, as an elder statesman of the party, Goldwater successfully urged President Richard Nixon to resign when evidence of a cover-up in the Watergate scandal became overwhelming and impeachment was imminent. By the 1980s, the increasing influence of the Christian right on the Republican Party so conflicted with Goldwater's views that he became a vocal opponent of the religious right on issues such as abortion, gay rights, and the role of religion in public life. After narrowly winning re-election to the Senate in 1980, he chose not to run for a fifth term in 1986, and was succeeded by fellow Republican John McCain. A significant accomplishment in his career was the passage of the Goldwater–Nichols Act of 1986, which restructured the higher levels of the Pentagon by placing the chain of command from the President to the Secretary of Defense directly to the commanders of the Unified Combatant Commands.

The great conservative senator Barry Goldwater (who was the GOP's nominee in the 1964 US presidential elections) - a man long slandered as a 'racist' and a candidate to whom Donald Trump has been simplistically compared - lays out the far more nuanced reasoning and motivations behind his opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Those reasons had nothing to do with 'racism' and everything to do with the unconstitutionality of certain provisions that had been bundled into the bill.
In reality Goldwater, who was one of six Republicans to vote against the bill, was no opponent of civil rights who sought to "re-segregate the nation." Goldwater had supported earlier attempts to pass civil rights legislation in 1957 and 1960, as well as the 24th Amendment (which outlawed poll taxes that disenfranchised Southern black voters), and his stated opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (which he otherwise favored) was based on his belief that two portions of the bill regulating the behavior of private enterprise were unconstitutional, would be unenforceable without a federal police force, and would lead to the creation of racial quotas and affirmative action.

A Time for Choosing, also known as The Speech, was a speech presented during the 1964 U.S. presidential election campaign by future president Ronald Reagan on behalf of Republican candidate Barry Goldwater.
Many versions of the speech exist, since it was altered over many weeks. Contrary to popular belief, however, the speech was not given at the 1964 Republican National Convention in San Francisco, California as a nomination speech for Barry Goldwater. Richard Nixon gave that nomination speech. Reagan, though he campaigned for Goldwater, did not use "A Time for Choosing" until October 27, 1964, when it was part of a pre-recorded television program, Rendezvous with Destiny. In his autobiography Reagan recalled going to bed that night "hoping I hadn't let Barry down."[citation needed] But "A Time for Choosing," replayed throughout the final week of the campaign, raised $8 million for Goldwater and launched Reagan's political career.
Soon afterward, Reagan was asked to run for governor of California. To this day, this speech is considered one of the most effective ever made on behalf of a candidate.
