Nicollet Island is an island in the Mississippi River just north of Saint Anthony Falls in central Minneapolis, Minnesota. According to the United States Census Bureau the island has a land area of 194,407 square metres (0.075 sq mi) and a 2000 census population of 144 persons. The island makes up a large part of the city-designated Nicollet Island/East Bank neighborhood. The island is named for cartographer Joseph Nicollet, who mapped the Upper Mississippi in the 1830s.
The island lies in the middle of the Mississippi, crossed by the Hennepin Avenue Bridge connecting Downtown and Northeast Minneapolis. The island is so near to Saint Anthony Falls that if the northward movement of the falls had not been stopped in the late 19th century, the island would no longer exist. In the early 19th century Nicollet Island was one of six islands near the falls, but all the others have been destroyed or joined to the east bank.
The island was the site of the first bridge across the Mississippi River, opened in 1855, on the site of the present Hennepin Avenue Bridge. It is part of Saint Anthony Falls Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

On July 12, 2012 I embarked on a real adventure: a biking tour of Minneapolis. Early in the morning my friend Gail dropped me off at Calhoun Bicycle Rentals, where Brad, one of their guides, took me under his wing and showed me around one of America's best bicycling cities. We started on the Cedar Lake Trail, made a quick stop at Hidden Beach and continued into downtown Minneapolis. We even cycled right next to the north wall of the Twins Stadium. Once in downtown, we admired the many bridges over the mighty Mississippi River and continued to Mill Ruins Park, a remainder of the many mills that used to dominate the Minneapolis skyline, particularly in the second half of the 19th and early 20th century. This was the era when Minneapolis had 33 flour mills that produced almost 10% of the flou...

Accompanying blog: http://aweekendin.blogspot.com/ Each weekend that I travel to a different city I try to pack in as many fun and interesting attractions as possible. To showcase how easy and cheap it can be to see the country, I do not take any time off of work (I have to work a full 40 hours on each side of the weekend). Additionally, I use a couple money saving techniques like couch surfing and kayak explore. This weekend I am in Minneapolis, and here is my itinerary: 1) Mall of America 2) Dick's Last Resort (Dinner at MOA) 3) Nickelodeon Universe (Amusement Park at MOA) 4) Chatterbox Pub 5) Bike around Minneapolis Lakes 6) Sebastian Joe's Ice Cream 7) Minneapolis Skyway System 8) Hell's Kitchen (Lunch) 9) Minneapolis Institute of Arts 10) Foshay Tower (Observation Deck) 11) Loring P...

Locks and dams on the Upper Mississippi River have significantly damaged -- and continue to degrade -- the Mississippi River. This infrastructure is the most heavily subsidized of all forms of transportation in the United States and one of the most environmentally damaging. A new report by the Nicollet Island Coalition, a group of conservation and economic organizations working in the Upper Mississippi River basin, outlines how the Water Resources Development Act could be used to save taxpayer dollars and restore America's river.

CHAPTER SELECT: 0:00 The Lighthouse 11:41 The Buoy 20:32 The Caves 31:28 The Beacon PREMISE: Witness firsthand the journey of a man on a mysterious island as he attempts to uncover the truth about both himself and the strange place he inhabits. PRESENTATION: Consider this a "film" rather than a typical video game walkthrough. Dear Esther is a very slow, relaxing, even poetic experience with wonderful sights and sounds galore. At over 45 minutes in length, I would suggest watching this on your television, in your living room if possible. If not, and if your office chair is comfy enough to suffice, consider preparing a nice, warm meal to accompany the flick. Dinner and a movie, you might call it. For the best possible viewing experience, I recorded the walkthrough using a gamepad so t...
