Asahi Kasei to acquire US auto-separator maker
Japanese chemical company Asahi Kasei has announced it will buy US energy storage business Polypore International for 2.2 billion dollars. It is a move to focus on the growth of hybrid and electric vehicles.
In a press release on Monday, Asahi Kasei executives said they would acquire all outstanding shares of Polypore's common stocks through its US subsidiary.
The North Carolina based company established a global platform for its lithium-ion battery separator business.
Asahi Kasei says the acquisition of Polypore will help strengthen its operation in electric and hybrid vehicles.
Asahi Kasei boasts the biggest share of the global separator market, but its products are mainly for personal computer and smartphones.
Polypore's separators, on the other hand, have been widely used in automobiles, including electric and hybrid cars.
Asahi Kasei also sees the merger as a way to expand its production base. Polypore has plants in the United States, European countries, Thailand and other countries. Asahi Kasei's production is centered in Japan and China.
The firm's president Toshio Asano said that he looks forward to combining the company's respective strengths.
Earlier, another major Japanese chemical maker, Sumitomo Chemical, said it is considering building new plants overseas to produce separators in an attempt to step up businesses related to storage cells.

Asahi Kasei to acquire US auto-separator maker
Japanese chemical company Asahi Kasei has announced it will buy US energy storage business Polypore International for 2.2 billion dollars. It is a move to focus on the growth of hybrid and electric vehicles.
In a press release on Monday, Asahi Kasei executives said they would acquire all outstanding shares of Polypore's common stocks through its US subsidiary.
The North Carolina based company established a global platform for its lithium-ion battery separator business.
Asahi Kasei says the acquisition of Polypore will help strengthen its operation in electric and hybrid vehicles.
Asahi Kasei boasts the biggest share of the global separator market, but its products are mainly for personal computer and smartphones.
Polypore's separators, on the other hand, have been widely used in automobiles, including electric and hybrid cars.
Asahi Kasei also sees the merger as a way to expand its production base. Polypore has plants in the United States, European countries, Thailand and other countries. Asahi Kasei's production is centered in Japan and China.
The firm's president Toshio Asano said that he looks forward to combining the company's respective strengths.
Earlier, another major Japanese chemical maker, Sumitomo Chemical, said it is considering building new plants overseas to produce separators in an attempt to step up businesses related to storage cells.
