Lying directly on the equator and serving as the main gateway into the Provincial capital of Pontianak. Founded in 1771 by Syarif Abdul Rahman Al-Kadri of Saudi Arabia, the city is now a bustling economic hub as well as home to a sizeable university and a giant indoor sports stadium. Canals crisscross the city and one of Indonesia's longest rivers, the Kapuas (1143 km long), divides the town in two, providing an essential and historical communications link. Like Java and Sumatra, West Kalimantan was once an important cultural crossroads.
Hinduism reached West Kalimantan by about the year 400 and evidence of both early Hindu and Buddhist civilizations in the region have been discovered. Stone carvings and ceramics can be traced as far back as the 5th century, but it is the influence of Islam that has had the most impact on this region.
The advent of Islam in West Kalimantan occurred at about the same time as the rise of the first Islamic Kingdom in Aceh in the 15th century. Islam was rapidly embraced and various kingdoms grew in strength and power, particularly because of Kalimantan's strategic importance along trade routes to China and Philippines.

The Dayaks have ancient traditions and beliefs which are expressed in various forms ; earlobes elongated by heavy earrings, tattoos, intricate paintings, designs and carvings and wonderful dances of respect, heroism, welcome and cure. A large Chinese population, Malays and other Indonesian ethnic groups account for the rest of the inhabitants of the province.

The Time for Global Action on Deforestation is Now..
Borneo - the 3rd largest island on our planet - is an epicentre for terrestrial Biodiversity.
In the past few decades illegal logging and expansion for palm oil is laying waste to millions of hectares of Bornean rainforest. This wave of destruction is threatening iconic species with extinction, pushing indigenous peoples from their ancestral lands and a major contributor to increased global climate instability.
DeforestAction is an exciting new project that empowers young people from around the world with the tools to collaborate and explore solutions to the deforestation crisis.
Oil palm plantations have expanded rapidly over the past two decades in Indonesia, clearing massive swathes of rainforest and critical peatland areas. Promises of economic development and jobs to local communities have not come true for many.
Why protect the rainforest?
The destruction of forests eco-systems is driving climate change in two ways. First, the clearing and burning of forests releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and second, the area of forest that absorbs carbon dioxide is reduced. Their role in regulating the climate is so crucial that if we destroy the last tropical forests, we will likely lose the battle against climate change.
Forests are home to much of the earth's terrestrial biodiversity -- millions of unique plants and animals. Furthermore, hundreds of millions of indigenous or forest-dependent people globally rely on them for their livelihood.

TAYANG episode Honda DBL di Kompas TV kali ini sampai di Kalimantan Barat. Program yang bisa dinikmati hari ini pukul 15.00 WIB itu menyajikan beragam cerita inspiratif. Salah satunya kisah sukses Hendry Bonardi, pelatih tim basket SMA Santu Petrus Pontianak.
Pelatih yang juga guru matematika Santu Petrus itu merupakan salah seorang pelatih yang terpilih menjadi bagian dalam DBL Indonesia All-Star 2008. Coach Bun, sapaan akrabnya, pernah merasakan serunya melatih tim DBL All-Star di Australia. Dia pun selalu sukses membawa tim putra maupun tim putri SMA Santu Petrus Pontianak menjaga hegemoni juara Honda DBL West Kalimantan Series.
'Banyak pelajaran yang saya dapat selama di Australia. Yang paling penting adalah detail. Secara skill maupun postur, pemain DBL All-Star tidak kalah dari pemain asing,' ujarnya.
Salah seorang pemain paling sukses dari SMA Santu Petrus Pontianak adalah Rivaldo Tandra Pangesthio. Namanya sangat dikenal publik Kalimantan Barat, meski baru 19 tahun. Dia membawa Santu Petrus meraih juara Honda DBL dua kali.
Tidak heran, Rivaldo pun terpilih untuk membela timnas U-18 dalam ajang FIBA Asia U-18 di Mongolia. 'Dengan ikut Honda DBL, saya mendapat banyak hal yang tidak saya raih di kompetisi lain,' ungkap Rivaldo.
Selain kisah Coach Bun, cerita menarik duet ayah dan anak di Honda DBL West Kalimantan Series akan diangkat dalam tayangan sore ini. Mereka adalah Andre Lim, sang ayah sekaligus pelatih, dan Nadia Callista, si anak yang merupakan pemain SMA Immanuel Pontianak.
'Sejak SD saya sangat tertarik pada Honda DBL karena melihat papa melatih tim basket. Dari situ, saya terus belajar basket sampai akhirnya bisa ikut Honda DBL,' ujar Nadia yang juga terpilih menjadi pemain League DBL First Team.
Highlight pertandingan final putri Honda DBL West Kalimantan Series 2014 juga akan hadir dalam tayangan sore ini. Sebuah kejutan dari tim putri SMA Bina Mulia Pontianak yang menaklukkan SMA Santu Petrus Pontianak menjadi ending yang apik.
Tim putri SMA Santu Petrus hampir setiap tahun memenangi Honda DBL. Namun, kekuatan tim basket SMA Bina Mulia berhasil menumbangkan dominasi tersebut.

Cap Go Meh in two of the Chinese dialects means ‘the 15th night’ of the lunar new year. This is the dinner where family members gather together for one final bash of good food and wine before saying goodbye to the new year celebration. But somewhere in Kalimantan Borneo in the small Chinese Hakka town of Singkawang, this celebration is more than just a private family reunion dinner. The local Hakkas call it ‘Tatung’ which means ‘going into a trance’.

West Kalimantan (Indonesian: Kalimantan Barat often abbreviated as Kalbar) is a province of Indonesia. It is one of four Indonesian provinces in Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of the island of Borneo. Its capital city Pontianak is located right on the Equator.
The province has an area of 147,307 km² with a recorded 2010 census population of 4,393,239. Major ethnic groups include the Dayak, Malay, Chinese, which make up about 90% of the total population. The rest are Javanese, Bugis, Madurese, and other ethnicities.
The borders of West Kalimantan roughly trace the mountain ranges surrounding the watershed of the Kapuas River, which drains most of the province.
The history of West Kalimantan can be dated back to 17th century. Dayaks were the main inhabitants of the province before 17th century. The Malay migrated to West Kalimantan and built their own sultanates. The high Chinese population in this province was due to a republic founded by Chinese miners called Lanfang Republic after they defeated the local Malay sultans. The government of Lanfang Republic was ended in West Kalimantan after the Dutch occupation in 1884.[citation needed]

Bujang the orangutan Singkawang Zoo, West Kalimantan
Bujang is a 9 year old orangutan at the Singkawang Zoo. He is the only remaining orangutan at this atrocious zoo after all the other orangutans had died from disease and neglect. Bujang is suffering from psychological problems as a result of being treated and kept like a criminal in the zoo. He needs to be saved, urgently, before he too dies. Orangutans are Indonesia's most iconic animal. Bujang's treatment is not an isolated case as countless other orangutans across Indonesia are treated in the same manner. -

Canals crisscross the city and one of Indonesia's longest rivers, the Kapuas (1143 km long), divides the town in two, providing an essential and historical communications link. Like Java and Sumatra, West Kalimantan was once an important cultural crossroads.
Hinduism reached West Kalimantan by about the year 400 and evidence of both early Hindu and Buddhist civilizations in the region have been discovered. Stone carvings and ceramics can be traced as far back as the 5th century, but it is the influence of Islam that has had the most impact on this region.
The advent of Islam in West Kalimantan occurred at about the same time as the rise of the first Islamic Kingdom in Aceh in the 15th century. Islam was rapidly embraced and various kingdoms grew in strength and power, particularly because of Kalimantan's strategic importance along trade routes to China and Philippines.

In the past few decades illegal logging and expansion for palm oil is laying waste to millions of hectares of Bornean rainforest. This wave of destruction is threatening iconic species with extinction, pushing indigenous peoples from their ancestral lands and a major contributor to increased global climate instability.
DeforestAction is an exciting new project that empowers young people from around the world with the tools to collaborate and explore solutions to the deforestation crisis.
Oil palm plantations have expanded rapidly over the past two decades in Indonesia, clearing massive swathes of rainforest and critical peatland areas. Promises of economic development and jobs to local communities have not come true for many.
Why protect the rainforest?
The destruction of forests eco-systems is driving climate change in two ways. First, the clearing and burning of forests releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and second, the area of forest that absorbs carbon dioxide is reduced. Their role in regulating the climate is so crucial that if we destroy the last tropical forests, we will likely lose the battle against climate change.
Forests are home to much of the earth's terrestrial biodiversity -- millions of unique plants and animals. Furthermore, hundreds of millions of indigenous or forest-dependent people globally rely on them for their livelihood.

TAYANG episode Honda DBL di Kompas TV kali ini sampai di Kalimantan Barat. Program yang bisa dinikmati hari ini pukul 15.00 WIB itu menyajikan beragam cerita inspiratif. Salah satunya kisah sukses Hendry Bonardi, pelatih tim basket SMA Santu Petrus Pontianak.
Pelatih yang juga guru matematika Santu Petrus itu merupakan salah seorang pelatih yang terpilih menjadi bagian dalam DBL Indonesia All-Star 2008. Coach Bun, sapaan akrabnya, pernah merasakan serunya melatih tim DBL All-Star di Australia. Dia pun selalu sukses membawa tim putra maupun tim putri SMA Santu Petrus Pontianak menjaga hegemoni juara Honda DBL West Kalimantan Series.
'Banyak pelajaran yang saya dapat selama di Australia. Yang paling penting adalah detail. Secara skill maupun postur, pemain DBL All-Star tidak kalah dari pemain asing,' ujarnya.
Salah seorang pemain paling sukses dari SMA Santu Petrus Pontianak adalah Rivaldo Tandra Pangesthio. Namanya sangat dikenal publik Kalimantan Barat, meski baru 19 tahun. Dia membawa Santu Petrus meraih juara Honda DBL dua kali.
Tidak heran, Rivaldo pun terpilih untuk membela timnas U-18 dalam ajang FIBA Asia U-18 di Mongolia. 'Dengan ikut Honda DBL, saya mendapat banyak hal yang tidak saya raih di kompetisi lain,' ungkap Rivaldo.
Selain kisah Coach Bun, cerita menarik duet ayah dan anak di Honda DBL West Kalimantan Series akan diangkat dalam tayangan sore ini. Mereka adalah Andre Lim, sang ayah sekaligus pelatih, dan Nadia Callista, si anak yang merupakan pemain SMA Immanuel Pontianak.
'Sejak SD saya sangat tertarik pada Honda DBL karena melihat papa melatih tim basket. Dari situ, saya terus belajar basket sampai akhirnya bisa ikut Honda DBL,' ujar Nadia yang juga terpilih menjadi pemain League DBL First Team.
Highlight pertandingan final putri Honda DBL West Kalimantan Series 2014 juga akan hadir dalam tayangan sore ini. Sebuah kejutan dari tim putri SMA Bina Mulia Pontianak yang menaklukkan SMA Santu Petrus Pontianak menjadi ending yang apik.
