The Dalai Lama /ˈdɑːlaɪ ˈlɑːmə/ is a monk of the Gelug or "Yellow Hat" school of Tibetan Buddhism, the newest of the schools of Tibetan Buddhism founded by Je Tsongkhapa. The 14th and current Dalai Lama is Tenzin Gyatso.
The Dalai Lama is considered to be the successor in a line of tulkus who are believed to be incarnations of Avalokiteśvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, called Chenrezig in Tibetan. The name is a combination of the Mongolic word dalai meaning "ocean" (being the translation of the Tibetan name, 'Gyatso') and the Tibetan word བླ་མ་ (bla-ma) meaning "guru, teacher, mentor". The Tibetan word "lama" corresponds to the better known Sanskrit word "guru".
From 1642 until the 1950s (except for 1705 to 1750), the Dalai Lamas or their regents headed the Tibetan government or Ganden Phodrang which governed all or most of the Tibetan plateau from Lhasa with varying degrees of autonomy, up to complete sovereignty. This government also enjoyed the patronage and protection of firstly Mongol kings of the Khoshut and Dzungar Khanates (1642–1720) and then of the emperors of the Manchu-led Qing dynasty (1720–1912).
The UN Human Rights Council has taken an increasingly prominent role in pressing for global action on the Syrian crisis. This marks a continuing revival of the world's preeminent rights body, which replaced a discredited rights commission. CFR Senior Fellow Stewart M. Patrick looks at five chief things to know about the reconstituted forum: - In 2006, the United Nations decided to dissolve the UN Commission on Human Rights, "which had become a haven for human rights abusers and an embarrassment." The Obama administration chose to join the forty-seven-member council, "rather than allowing human rights violators and spoilers from Cuba to Pakistan to run roughshod over it." - Despite important improvements, the Council maintains some serious flaws, ranging from procedural roadblocks like...

An introduction to the work of the United Nations Human Rights Council.
The New York Times makes an editorial comment stuck in the middle of an article that undermines the Israeli Prime Minister's claim that the United Nations Human Rights Council is "obsessed" with Israel. But the facts are on the Prime Minister's side and the comment is harmful and misleading. The article that I'm discussing can be found at the following URL: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/23/world/middleeast/israel-gaza-report.html You can contact the Times Public Editor, Margaret Sullivan by sending an email to public@nytimes.com Read the whole story on the HonestReporting website: http://honestreporting.com/the-nyt-balances-the-un-human-rights-council/

One of the world's most revered leaders and a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, the Dalai Lama in an exclusive interview to NDTV spoke for the first time on the self-immolation a few weeks ago of a 16-year-old Tibetan boy. Interestingly, he said he will not openly condemn these self immolations for the Tibetan cause though he is saddened by them. Speaking on the NDTV Dialogues, he said, "I expressed my sadness but I also expressed how much effect such a drastic step has. If you criticise, that is also difficult. If the family members hear the Dalai Lama criticise self-immolation, a negative attitude, they would be tremendously sad. I don't want that. I can't also encourage such incidents so I just keep quiet. Let the Chinese say what they say." Watch full video: http://www.ndtv.com/video/playe...

Britain has been accused of blocking the UN inquiry into atrocities in Yemen allegedly carried out by its theocratic ally Saudi Arabia. In an open letter to the UN Human Rights Council (HRC), a group of NGOs has alleged that the UK is blocking the progress of the inquiry by failing to give backing to an effort by the Netherlands to set up a full investigation. Since the conflict began the UK has sold more than £3 billion (US$3.9 billion) in arms to the Saudi regime and provided training on targeting both by warplanes and artillery. The groups, including Human Rights Watch and Campaign Against the Arms Trade (CAAT), have said that the inquiry would “establish the facts, collect and preserve information related to violations and abuses with a view to ensuring that those responsible for cr...

On March 20, 2014, the Human Rights Council considered China's 2013 Universal Periodic Review outcome report, a comprehensive evaluation of its human rights obligations under the UN system. During the session, China challenged an NGO's right to observe a moment of silence for rights defender Cao Shunli (曹顺利), who had died less than one week earlier, and objected when another NGO began to deliver a joint statement, arguing that accredited NGOs may only reference other accredited organizations. At the end of the session, the Human Rights Council formally adopted the outcome report for China's second UPR, and China accepted 204 of the 252 recommendations, stating that 31 have already been implemented, 8 are being implemented, and the rejected recommendations were "not practicable and were ...

Thrown to the wind 'cause their hearts were not present
People don't believe in miracles anymore
