145th Street Bridge

The 145th Street Bridge, located in New York City, USA, is a four-lane swing bridge that crosses the Harlem River, connecting 145th Street and Lenox Avenue in Manhattan with East 149th Street and River Avenue in the Bronx. It once carried northbound New York State Route 22 and New York State Route 100. Additionally, this bridge, for its proximity to the eponymous avenue, was once named the "Lenox Avenue Bridge," an original name that has fallen into disuse. The bridge is operated and maintained by the New York City Department of Transportation.
Construction on the 145th Street Bridge began on April 19, 1901, and the $2.75 million bridge was opened to traffic on August 24, 1905. The designer was Alfred Pancoast Boller.
A new swing span for the bridge was assembled in the former Powell & Minnock Brick Yard in Coeymans, New York, in southern Albany County. The span was replaced in early November 2006
The 145th Street Bridge carries the Bx19 bus route operated by MTA New York City Transit. The average weekday ridership of the Bx19 bus route is 33,770.

60th Street Tunnel
The 60th Street Tunnel carries the N Q R trains of the New York City Subway under the East River and Roosevelt Island between Manhattan and Queens.
The tunnel was built as part of the Dual Contracts period of New York City subway construction. The original plan provided for trackage over the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge, which spans the East River from about 59th Street in Manhattan to Queens Plaza in Queens. However, an investigation made following the 1907 collapse of the Quebec Bridge determined that the bridge would not be able to handle the additional weight of subway trains; thus, the tunnel was constructed to the north.Clifford Milburn Holland served as the engineer-in-charge.
The tunnel opened to revenue service on Sunday, August 1, 1920 at 2 am with a holiday schedule, the same day as the Montague Street Tunnel. Regular service began Monday, August 2, 1920. The two new tunnels allowed passengers to make an 18-mile (29 km) trip from Coney Island, through Manhattan, to Queens for a 5 cent fare. The original construction cost was $5,617,008.97.

63rd Street Tunnel
The 63rd Street Tunnel currently carries the IND 63rd Street Line of the New York City Subway under the East River between the boroughs of Manhattan and Queens. It is the newest of the East River tunnels, and the newest river crossing in the New York metropolitan area. Construction of the 63rd Street Tunnel began on November 24, 1969 and the tunnel was holed through beneath Roosevelt Island on October 10, 1972 However, completion of the tunnel was delayed by New York City's fiscal crisis of the 1970s. The tunnel was placed into partial service in 1989 and was nicknamed the "tunnel to nowhere" due to its lack of connections in Queens.
The final section of the 63rd Street Tunnel, which cost $645 million to complete and connected what had been a service dead-ending at the 21st Street station in Queensbridge to the IND Queens Boulevard Line, was finished in 2000 and first used by trains during the off-peak hours while signal work was performed in the 53rd Street Tunnel. The tunnel connection was placed into permanent service with the start of V train and the shifting of the route of the F train on December 17, 2001.

Goethals Bridge
The Goethals Bridge (
/ˈɡɑːθəlz/) connects Elizabeth, New Jersey to Staten Island (New York City), near the Howland Hook Marine Terminal, Staten Island, New York over the Arthur Kill. Operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the span was one of the first structures built by the authority. On the New Jersey side it is located 2 exits south of the terminus for the New Jersey Turnpike-Newark Bay Extension. The primary use for this bridge is a connection for New York City to Newark Airport. The bridge has been grandfathered into Interstate 278, and named for Major General George Washington Goethals, who supervised construction of the Panama Canal and was the first consulting engineer of the Port Authority.
A steel truss cantilever design by John Alexander Low Waddell, who also designed the Outerbridge Crossing. The bridge is 672 ft (205 m) long central span, 7,109 feet (2,168 m) long in total, 62 feet (19 m) wide, has a clearance of 135 feet (41.1 m) and has four lanes for traffic. The Port Authority had $3 million of state money and raised $14 million in bonds to build the Goethals Bridge and the Outerbridge Crossing; the Goethals bridge construction began on September 1, 1925 and cost $7.2 million. It and the Outerbridge Crossing opened on June 29, 1928. The Goethals Bridge replaced three ferries and is the immediate neighbor of the Arthur Kill Rail Bridge. Its unusual mid-span height was a requirement of the New Jersey ports.

Outerbridge Crossing
The Outerbridge Crossing is a cantilever bridge which spans the Arthur Kill. The "Outerbridge", as it is commonly known, connects Perth Amboy, New Jersey, with the New York City borough of Staten Island and carries NY-440 and NJ-440, each road ending at the respective state border.
The bridge was named for Eugenius Harvey Outerbridge (sometimes pronounced "ooterbridge") the first chairman of the then-Port of New York Authority and a resident of Staten Island. Rather than call it the "Outerbridge Bridge" the span was labeled a "crossing", but many New Yorkers and others mistakenly assume the name comes from the fact that it is the most remote bridge in New York City and the southernmost crossing in New York state.
It is a steel cantilever construction, designed by John Alexander Low Waddell and built under the auspices of the Port of New York Authority, now the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which currently operates it.
It opened simultaneously with the Goethals Bridge on June 29, 1928. Both spans have similar designs. Neither bridge saw high traffic counts until the opening of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in 1964. Traffic counts on both bridges were also depressed due to the effects of the Great Depression and World War II.

Willis Avenue Bridge
The Willis Avenue Bridge is a swing bridge that carries road traffic northbound (and bicycles and pedestrians both ways) over the Harlem River between the New York City boroughs of Manhattan and the Bronx, United States. It connects First Avenue in Manhattan with Willis Avenue in the Bronx. The New York City Department of Transportation is responsible for maintaining and operating the bridge.
Runners of the New York Marathon have dubbed it "the wall" because it marks the 20 mile mark on the run.
The bridge opened in 1901, at an original construction cost of $1,640,523.11 and a land cost of $803,988.37. Major reinforcing work was done in 1916. It once carried both directions of (no longer designated) New York Route 1A and later northbound NY 1A only.
In November 2005, New York City sought to replace the bridge. In an effort to preserve the structure, the city offered it for sale for $1, with free delivery within 15 miles. Due to the difficult logistics of moving the structure, there were no bids as of March 2007. Granite from the structure was given to a nearby park while the metal part was moved via tug to Jersey City on April 12, 2011, the steel melted and the concrete parts made into fill.

John Fekner
John Fekner (born in New York City) is an innovative multimedia artist who created hundreds of environmental and conceptual outdoor works consisting of stenciled words, symbols, dates and icons spray painted in New York, Sweden, Canada, England and Germany in the 1970s and 1980s. A seminal figure in the Street Art movement, Fekner participated in recent urban art exhibitions such as Wooster Collective's 11 Spring Street Project in 2006 and in "Art in the Streets" at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles in 2011. Working with Don Leicht, their project entitled "The Stanley Cup is missing" was part of the annual BLK River street art festival in Vienna, Austria. Art writer Lucy R. Lippard writes, "Fekner does in public what a lot of art world artists don’t even do in galleries: he dispels ambiguity by naming his visions, his viewpoint."
In 1968, Fekner painted the words Itchycoo Park in large white letters on an empty building in Gorman Park, New York. In 1978 he curated the Detective Show at the same outdoor location in Queens which included the words street museum on the invitational card. Fekner developed a philosophy of ‘reducing the value of an art object to that of a shared visual experience for the public’ through stencil graffiti that interacted, involved and connected with the urban populace across the five boroughs of New York.

We are on the Pulaski Bridge, a bascule drawbridge which spans Newtown Creek and defines the border between Brooklyn and Queens, where we happen to come upon the uncommon occurrence of a bridge lift. Newtown Creek, which this bridge crosses, is a small 3 mile long industrial water way used primarily by barges and tugboats to serve some factories along the water. While there are bridge openings, they are rather uncommon. The Pulaski Bridge connects 11th Street in Long Island City in Queens to McGuinness Boulevard in Greenpoint in Brooklyn. The bridge was opened in 1954, and replaced the old Vernon Avenue Bridge. The bridge has 4 separate segments. Once raised, we see Reinauer Transportation tugboat Matthew Tibbetts as it heads for the East River. Once the tugboat is clear, the bridge segments close gingerly, make the ground shake as they completely close, and the gates go up after everything is down and locked. Here we are on top of the Pulaski drawbridge, which connects Brooklyn to Queens, where we see a Long Island Railroad train of bi-levels duck under the bridge as they depart Long Island City, blow for the crossings at 11th Street and Borden Avenue, and head for Hunterspoint Avenue. I am uncertain as to where this train was going, or the number. Today's consist is DE30AC 418, 7 C-3 bi-level coaches, and DE30AC 410 on the rear. After the train leaves, we watch some cars go over the bridge, which spans Newtown Creek. If you have any questions about the video, feel free to message me. Comments are welcome. Here we are on top of the Pulaski drawbridge, which connects Brooklyn to Queens, where we see a Long Island Railroad train of bi-levels duck under the bridge as they depart Long Island City, blow for the crossings at 11th Street and Borden Avenue, and head for Hunterspoint Avenue. I am uncertain as to where this train was going, or the number. Today's consist is DE30AC 418, 7 C-3 bi-level coaches, and DE30AC 410 on the rear. After the train leaves, we watch some cars go over the bridge, which spans Newtown Creek. If you have any questions about the video, feel free to message me. Comments are welcome. The Pulaski Bridge in New York City connects Long Island City in Queens to Greenpoint in Brooklyn over Newtown Creek. It was named after Polish military commander and American Revolutionary War fighter Kazimierz Pułaski (Casimir Pulaski) because of the large Polish-American population in Greenpoint.[2] It connects 11th Street in Queens to McGuinness Boulevard (formerly Oakland Street) in Brooklyn.
The Pulaski Bridge opened to traffic on September 10, 1954.[3] It served as a replacement for the nearby Vernon Avenue Bridge, which had linked Vernon Avenue in Long Island City with Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint.[2]
Designed by Frederick Zurmuhlen, the Pulaski Bridge is a bascule bridge, a type of drawbridge. It carries six lanes of traffic and a pedestrian sidewalk over the water, Long Island Rail Road tracks, and the entrance to the Queens-Midtown Tunnel. The pedestrian sidewalk is on the west or downstream side of the bridge, which has good views of the industrial areas surrounding Newtown Creek, the skyline of Manhattan, and of a number of other bridges, including the Williamsburg Bridge, the Queensboro Bridge, and the Kosciuszko Bridge. The bridge was reconstructed between 1991 and 1994.[4]
From 1979 until 1990, a message reading "Wheels Over Indian Trails" was painted on the Pulaski Bridge over the approach to the Queens-Midtown Tunnel. The artwork was created by John Fekner as a tribute to the thirteen Native American tribes who inhabited Long Island.[5]
Located just over 13 miles (21 km) from the start of the New York City Marathon at the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, the Pulaski Bridge serves as the approximate halfway point in the race.[6]
