More info from there website 500strong2013.com 500Strong2013 is a masquerade band, formed in 2013 by Val Adams and Associates, to participate in the annual Labor Day Carnival in Brooklyn, New York. The group won the ‘Small Band Category’ in 2013 with their portrayal of “Shortknee”. Shortknee is the iconic image of Grenada’s Traditional and Cultural Carnival. The masquerader wears a wire screened mask, and is fully covered from head to toe, with emphasis on the knee breeches, a white bath towel on the head, and mirrors on the collar. It depicts one of the many African cultures that came to Grenada from West and Central Africa. For Labor Day Carnival 2014, “500 Strong” will portray “Elements of Spicemas”. This portrayal constitutes the basic format of the annual Grenada carnival. The sections begin with Jab in Paris. The drum-beating, devilish-looking Jab Jab, dressed in a black and silver costume, with silver spikes, huge horns, and carries heavy silver chains, which is usually dragged on the ground. Traditionally, the Jab Jab will make their appearance in the wee hours of the morning, long before sunrise. The second section is the Shortknee, who traditionally makes their appearance for Grenada carnival soon after sunrise (refer to details on the shortknee given earlier). Spice World is our third section. It is portrayed in three parts as follows: Spice Royalty, Shades of the Sea and Spice Sunrays. Spice Royalty represents the three beautiful colors of our national flag of Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique, Red, green and gold. The feathered head, optional backpack, arm and leg pieces are complimented by beaded full and half-bodied attire. Shades of the Sea symbolize the clear blue waters, which enhances our calm and beautiful beaches. It creates the unrealistic contrast to Spice Royalty, with its dark to faded blue beads, laces and feathers, Mohawk head-pieces, full and half-bodied outfits and optional backpack. Spice Sunrays closes out the Spice World section. It simply represents the rays of our bright sun. As with the other two sections of Spice World, its feathered pieces on the arms, legs, head piece and optional backpack, are all beaded to create that additional glitter, reflecting the rays of the sun. The concept of “Elements of Spice Mas” is still not over. After the display of the sections already mentioned, the sun is about to set, and masqueraders prepare for the grand finale, Monday Night Mas. This section comes with the loose-fitting, glittering green, stripped florescent T-shirt, red shorts/tights, visors and blow horn.
