Vivian Patrick Campbell (born 25 August 1962) is a Northern Irish rock guitarist.
He came to prominence in the early 1980s as a member of Dio, and has been a member of Def Leppard since 1992 (replacing the late Steve Clark). Campbell has also worked with Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, Sweet Savage, Trinity, Riverdogs, and Shadow King.
He began playing guitar at the age of 12. He has played for Sweet Savage, Dio, Trinity, Whitesnake, Riverdogs, and Shadow King. He also played on Lou Gramm's (from Foreigner) second solo album Long Hard Look.
Sweet Savage was a NWOBHM band that Campbell joined when he was 15. The band members in Sweet Savage included Campbell on guitar, Trev Fleming on guitar, David Bates on drums and Ray Haller on bass and vocals. The band influenced Metallica, who covered the song "Killing Time" as a B-side for their "The Unforgiven" single. It was also included on Metallica's Garage Inc. covers album. In 1981 they released an e.p. consisting of four BBC radio sessions and their first single "Take No Prisoners". "Take No Prisoners" included the song "Killing Time". Much later in the late 90s after Metallica covered "Killing Time", there was interest in Sweet Savage and they released an album without him. Campbell left Sweet Savage in early 1983 to join Dio after Jake E. Lee (the original Dio guitarist) was offered Randy Rhoads spot as Ozzy Osbourne's lead guitarist on December 1982, when Ronnie James Dio was forming his own band. Vivian Campbell later guested on Sweet Savage's cover of the traditional Irish song "Whiskey in the Jar".
Thin Lizzy are an Irish rock band formed in Dublin in 1969. Two of the founding members, drummer Brian Downey and bass guitarist and vocalist Phil Lynott, met while still in school. Lynott assumed the role of frontman and led them throughout their recording career of twelve studio albums. Thin Lizzy's most successful songs, "Whiskey in the Jar", "Jailbreak" and "The Boys Are Back in Town", were all major international hits which are still played regularly on hard rock and classic rock radio stations. After Lynott's death in 1986, various incarnations of the band have emerged over the years based initially around guitarists Scott Gorham and John Sykes, though Sykes left the band in 2009. Gorham later continued with a new line-up including Downey.
Lynott, Thin Lizzy's de facto leader, was composer or co-composer of almost all of the band's songs, and the first black Irishman to achieve commercial success in the field of rock music. Thin Lizzy boasted some of the most critically acclaimed guitarists throughout their history, with Downey and Lynott as the rhythm section, on the drums and bass guitar. As well as being multiracial, the band drew their members not only from both sides of the Irish border but also from both the Catholic and Protestant communities during The Troubles. Their music reflects a wide range of influences, including blues, soul music, psychedelic rock, and traditional Irish folk music, but is generally classified as hard rock or sometimes heavy metal. Rolling Stone magazine describes the band as distinctly hard rock, "far apart from the braying mid-70s metal pack".

At the Hillcrest Center for the Arts, after the end of "The Gondoliers" performance (in which they both starred) my son, Jeffrey, pops the big question in front of the entire audience!
I thought maybe I might share my thoughts on Vivian. He was one of my favorite guitarists, especially in his early days. As a fan I followed him closely and here are some of my observations with a little bit of guitar thrown in of course. I brought the 1983 Black Les Paul Custom out to add to the fun although I cannot play it very well.

Some of the best lead chops of Vivian Campbell when he was still an active and innovative guitar player. In my opinion he has one of the best left hands and hammer-ons, that he hardly needs a pick!

Vivian Campbell - Hysteria live at the Mint in LA
Went ahead and did this video again.. Idk just seems like something was wrong with the first one or I just didn't like it for some reason. This one flows better tbh, has different solos in them, and it's just longer. Yes maybe 11 minutes is overkill but its a big middle finger to anybody that says Vivian is a shit player or anything of that nature. Viv is great and I love his playing! This video consist of solo's from Dio and Def Leppard... Every 2 solo's or so it switches off, you'll probably be able to figure out which band is which band...I hope you guys like this though! And I do not own any of the pictures.
From Winter Masters of Rock 2016, Zlin. Check what Andrew did during the song (starting at 1:00)!
De um antigo k7, praticamente impossível de encontrar para download, que me rendeu dores de cabeça terríveis pra upar aqui, mas o esforço vale a pena esse show tem que ser compartilhado.
For those that like to scrutinize solos...

Article and photos: http://bit.ly/DefLepRR Def Leppard’s Vivian Campbell and Phil Collen took a break from their current arena-filling tour to discuss the rigs they are using on their current tour with Kiss. Campbell filled in the history of his life-long love of Les Pauls while Collen took us through his collection of Jacksons and one Strat with serious sentimental value. Guitar techs Scott Appleton, Roger Veage, and Dave “Wolfie” Wolff fill in the details on the rest of the gear. PHIL COLLEN'S GEAR Phil Collen travels with several vaults of spectacular guitars; way too many to cover here, so let’s just go with a few of his favorites. Collen’s Jackson X-Stroyer is based on his old Ibanez Destroyer, but the contours of the body have been inverted. It has DiMarzio Super 3 pickups and a Ja...

Hard Rockology Show interview with guitarist Vivian Campbell of Dio, Def Leppard, and most recently Last In Line. During part 1 of our interview Vivian discusses the formation and making of the debut Last in Line album Heavy Crown (2016). He also discusses the creative differences and approaches between Last In Line, Def Leppard and several of the other bands that he has worked with over his career, along with perhaps one of the best takes on how the music industry has changed over the years, and how the classic guitar solo for “Rainbow In The Dark” came about; all of this in a mere 20 some odd minutes.
Shadow King is a supergroup featuring ex-Foreigner vocalist Lou Gramm and ex-Dio (and current Def Leppard) guitarist Vivian Campbell alongside bassist and longtime Gramm collaborator Bruce Turgon and drummer Kevin Valentine. They sounded somewhere between Bad English and Foreigner with a heavier approach at moments thanks to the guitar sound of Vivian Campbell. This is one of the few albums that I love every song on it. The last time Vivian Campbell and Vinny Appice shared a stage in the UK they were on the road with Dio. A fair amount of water has passed under the bridge since then but Campbell and Appice are back with Last In Line performing the best of the early Dio albums and songs from their excellent new album Heavy Crown. Metal Express Radio's Mick Burgess caught up with Vivian Campbell to talk about the early days in Dio and why he decided to return to playing those songs again after so many years as well as the prospects of a second album from Last In Line. BackstageAxxess interviews Vivian Campbell of Last in Line and Def Leppard on February 28, 2017.
