Etta James (born Jamesetta Hawkins; January 25, 1938 – January 20, 2012) was an American singer who spanned a variety of music genres including blues, R&B, soul, rock and roll, jazz and gospel. Starting her career in 1954, she gained fame with hits such as "The Wallflower", "At Last", "Tell Mama", "Something's Got a Hold on Me", and "I'd Rather Go Blind" for which she wrote the lyrics. She faced a number of personal problems, including drug addiction, before making a musical resurgence in the late 1980s with the album Seven Year Itch.
James is regarded as having bridged the gap between rhythm and blues and rock and roll, and was the winner of six Grammys and 17 Blues Music Awards. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001, and the Grammy Hall of Fame in both 1999 and 2008.Rolling Stone ranked James number 22 on their list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time and number 62 on the list of the 100 Greatest Artists.

Etta James - I Saw The Light 1. I wandered so aimless, life filled with sin; I wouldn't let my dear Saviour in. Then Jesus came like a stranger in the night; Praise the Lord, I saw the light! Chorus I saw the light, I saw the light. No more darkness; no more night. Now I'm so happy no sorrow in sight. Praise the Lord, I saw the light! 2. Just like a blind man I wandered alone, Worries and fears I claimed for my own. Then like the blind man God gave his sight; Praise the Lord, I saw the light! 3. I was a fool to wander astray, For straight is the gate and narrow is the way. Now I have traded the wrong for the right; Praise the Lord, I saw the light!
*Sorry, I typed the wrong name at the end of the video. it's ETTA JAMES and NOT ETTA JONES. I'm sorry Etta and all of your fans. I didn't mean anything bad, it was a simple mistake. Thanks to those who warned me.* A collection of videos and pictures of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes put together with the song At Last (Etta James).

The absolutely amazing Holmes Brothers performing the Gospel classic, and title track of their 'best of' CD, I Saw The Light' live on Australian TV during one of the tours i promoted in the early 90's. Wendell Holmes on Guitar and Vocals, Sherman Holmes on Bass and Vocals and Popsy Dixon on Drums and that amazing falsetto harmony. The Holmes Brothers exemplify the soul, gospel, blues and R&B; genres - all in one amazingly compact unit with a depth of feeling only imaginable after 40 years of performing together.

"At Last" é uma canção escrita por Mack Gordon e Harry Warren em 1941 para o filme "Orchestra Wives", estrelado por "George Montgomery" e "Ann Rutherford". A versão mais famosa da canção foi gravada por Etta James, mas também foi regravada por Beyoncé e incluída na trilha sonora do filme "Cadillac Records". No filme, a cantora interpreta Etta James.
Keith Richards invited a roster of great musicians to honor Chuck Berry for an evening of music to commemorate Berry's 60th birthday. Taken from the Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll movie.

So I'm gonna do just what I want to anyway, And don't care if you all despise me. If I should take a notion To jump into the ocean, It ain't nobody's business if I do. If I go to church on Sunday And I shimmy down on Monday, It ain't nobody's business if I do. And if my friend ain't got no money And I say, "All right, take all of mine honey," It ain't nobody's business if I do. If I lend her my last nickel And it leaves me in a pickle, It ain't nobody's business if I do. I would rather my gal would hit me Than to haul right up and quit me. Etta James is interviewed by Sue Simmons on the NYC news program Live At Five in 1995 (see co-anchor Matt Lauer at the very end). Etta talks about her autobiography, meeting Billie Holiday and Minnesota Fats. There is also a clip of her being presented with her Grammy for Mystery Lady.
Etta James is interviewed for a Women In Jazz TV special in the 1980's. She discusses her influences, including Billie Holiday. As many have pointed out, the narrator is wrong - Billie Holliday died of liver failure in 1959. No need to comment on it below.
In 2008, singer Etta James attended the 'Cadillac Records' premiere. Beyonce Knowles played her in the movie.

I love everything about this eccentric woman. Her wicked laugh, her confidence, her passion and love for life. From the 1982 documentary "All by Myself: The Eartha Kitt Story".
Born in Los Angeles, California, on January 25, 1938, Etta James was a gospel prodigy. In 1954, she moved to Los Angeles to record "The Wallflower." Her career had begun to soar by 1960, due in no small part to songs like "I'd Rather Go Blind" and "At Last." Despite her continued drug problems, she earned a Grammy Award nomination for her 1973 eponymous album. In 2006, she released the album All the Way. James died in Riverside, California, on January 20, 2012, and continues to be considered one of the most dynamic singers in music. Music video by Etta James performing Something's Got A Hold On Me.
Many years ago, 1980 or so, Etta James was performing in San Francisco. She graciously allowed me to record an interview with her for the small, now-defunct radio news service where I worked. We sat for an hour in her room at the Hotel Miyako (now the Hotel Kabuki), while her two young boys played on the floor with her husband (you can hear them in the background). Perhaps because I was not a "slick" reporter type, and was genuinely interested in hearing her talk about her life, she spoke openly and freely about a number of topics. It became more of a conversation than an interview. She was kind, generous, honest, so completely herself, so down to earth. I am forever grateful for this moment in time. As the owner of this recording, I would like to share this moment with her fans, and I d...
I don’t want you to be no slave
I don’t want to work all day
but I want you to be true
and I just wanna make love to you
love to you
ooh-ooh
love to you
all I want to do is wash your clothes
I don’t want to keep you indoors
there is nothing for you to do
but keep me making love to you
love to you
ooh-ooh
love to you
CHORUS and I can tell by the way
that you walk that walk
I can hear by the way
you talk that talk
and I can know by the way
you treat your girl
that I could give you all the loving
in the whole wide world
all I want to do is bake your bread
just to make sure you’re well fed
I don’t want you sad and blue
and I just wanna make love to you
CHORUS
all I want to do is bake your bread
just to make sure you’re well fed
I don’t want you sad and blue
and I just wanna make love to you
love to you
ooh-ooh
love to you
ooh-ooh
love to you
