But he's been detained for the last three and a half years, ever since a raid on his home where he was arrested. Roads leading to the High court have been blocked and there is a heavy security presence around the premises.

Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, is an outspoken Shi'a Muslim cleric in Nigeria.
He is the head of Nigeria's Islamic Movement,
a movement that he founded in the late 1970s,
The Islamic Movement in Nigeria is a non-violent religious and political organisation
based in Northern state of Kaduna,
with both Shia and Sunni Muslim followers. (source: IHRC)
On Friday 25 July 2014,
the Nigerian Army fatally shot 35 pro-Palestinian protesters marking 'Al Quds Day' (source IHRC)
3 of Sheikh Zakzaky's sons were killed in the attack,
with hundreds more injured including bystanders (source IHRC)
A year later, in December 2015,
the Nigerian Army launched a violent raid on the headquarters of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria
and the residence of Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky (CNN)
Hundreds of his followers flocked to protect the residence,
but were gunned down in what is now known as the Zaria Massacre
At least 348 civilians were killed,
with 347 bodies secretly buried by the army in a mass grave. (Kaduna State Government).
3 more sons of Sheikh Zakzaky were killed in the deadly attack.
Sheikh Zakzaky was severely injured and arrested along with his wife
The Army claimed that it had responded to an attempt to assassinate Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff
However this claim has been rejected by several human rights organisations
who argue that the massacre occurred without provocation and that the protesters were unarmed (VOA News)
In December 2016, the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the release of Sheikh Zakzaky

However the order was never implemented and he has remained in detention without charge
at an unknown location with little to no access to the outside world.
His supporters allege that his health has severely deteriorated
and that authorities are preventing medical access for treatment.

Ibrahim Zakzaky
Ibrahim Yaqoub El Zakzaky (alternately Ibraheem Zakzaky; Ibrahim Al-Zakzaky) (born May 5, 1953) is a Shi'a Muslim cleric in Nigeria, and head of Nigeria's Islamic Movement (IMN). In 2015 Zakzaky was injured and arrested by the army. His whereabouts are unknown.
Personal life
Ibrahim Zakzaky was born on 5 May 1953 (15 Sha’ban 1372 AH), in Zaria, Kaduna State. He is married to Zeenah and with whom he had six children.
Early career
Zakzaky attended the Provincial Arabic School, Zaria (1969-1970), Law School (now the School for Arabic Studies), Kano (1971-1975) and the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria (1976-1979). He became the secretary-general of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN) in the Main Campus of ABU (1977/78) and later Vice President (International Affairs) of the National Body of the MSSN in 1979.

Dr Iqbal Siddiqui described El-Zakzaky as "the de facto leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria".

Roads leading to the High court have been blocked and there is a heavy security presence around the premises.

Who is Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky, and why is he being imprisoned in Nigeria?
Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, is an outspoken Shi'a Muslim cleric in Nigeria.
He is the head of Nigeria's Islamic Movement,
a movement that he founded in the late 1970s,
The Islamic Movement in Nigeria is a non-violent religious and political organisation
based in Northern state of Kaduna,
with both Shia and Sunni Muslim followers. (source: IHRC)
On Friday 25 July 2014,
the Nigerian Army fatally shot 35 pro-Palestinian protesters marking 'Al Quds Day' (source IHRC)
3 of Sheikh Zakzaky's sons were killed in the attack,
with hundreds more injured including bystanders (source IHRC)
A year later, in December 2015,
the Nigerian Army launched a violent raid on the headquarters of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria
and the residence of Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky (CNN)
Hundreds of his followers flocked to protect the residence,
but were gunned down in what is now known as the Zaria Massacre
At least 348 civilians were killed,
with 347 bodies secretly buried by the army in a mass grave. (Kaduna State Government).
3 more sons of Sheikh Zakzaky were killed in the deadly attack.
Sheikh Zakzaky was severely injured and arrested along with his wife
The Army claimed that it had responded to an attempt to assassinate Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff
However this claim has been rejected by several human rights organisations
who argue that the massacre occurred without provocation and that the protesters were unarmed (VOA News)
In December 2016, the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the release of Sheikh Zakzaky
and for compensation to be paid. (Source: Pulse Nigeria)
However the order was never implemented and he has remained in detention without charge
at an unknown location with little to no access to the outside world.
His supporters allege that his health has severely deteriorated
and that authorities are preventing medical access for treatment.
Protesters in Nigeria and around the world are demanding his immediate release.

Ibrahim Zakzaky
Ibrahim Yaqoub El Zakzaky (alternately Ibraheem Zakzaky; Ibrahim Al-Zakzaky) (born May 5, 1953) is a Shi'a Muslim cleric in Nigeria, and head of Nigeria's Islamic Movement (IMN). In 2015 Zakzaky was injured and arrested by the army. His whereabouts are unknown.
Personal life
Ibrahim Zakzaky was born on 5 May 1953 (15 Sha’ban 1372 AH), in Zaria, Kaduna State. He is married to Zeenah and with whom he had six children.
Early career
Zakzaky attended the Provincial Arabic School, Zaria (1969-1970), Law School (now the School for Arabic Studies), Kano (1971-1975) and the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria (1976-1979). He became the secretary-general of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN) in the Main Campus of ABU (1977/78) and later Vice President (International Affairs) of the National Body of the MSSN in 1979.

Dr Iqbal Siddiqui described El-Zakzaky as "the de facto leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria".
