Front line

A front line (alternative forms: front-line or frontline) in military terminology is the position(s) closest to the area of conflict of an armed force's personnel and equipment, generally referring to maritime or land forces. When a front (an intentional or unintentional boundary) between opposing sides form, the front line is the area where the armies are engaged in conflict, especially the line of contact between the opposing forces. In a military conflict, then, when facing the front line, you face the enemy.

All branches of the U.S. armed services use the related technical terms, Forward Line of Own Troops (FLOT) and Forward Edge of Battle Area (FEBA). These terms are used as battlespace control measures that designate the forward-most friendly maritime or land forces on the battlefield at a given point in time during an armed conflict. FLOT/FEBA may include covering and screening forces. The Forward Line of Enemy Troops (FLET) is the FEBA from the enemy's perspective.

Front Lines is a forthcoming young adult historical novel by the American writer Michael Grant, who is most famous for his dystopian young adult fictional series The Gone Series. It is written from the viewpoint of three girls, Rio Richlin, Frangie Marr, and Rainy Schulterman. The series was originally titled Soldier Girls. Front Lines is to be published in the UK on the 28th January and in the USA on the 26th January.

Plot

Front Lines starts out in 1942 and war is raging in Europe, China, Southeast Asia and Northern Africa. Millions have died.

In the USA, a court decision has made women subject to the draft and eligible for service. So in Gedwell Falls, California Rio Richlin is deciding whether to enlist, as is Rainy Schulterman in New York City and Frangie Marr in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

These three girls sign up to fight, they are girls with dreams and aspirations. Each has her own reasons for volunteering: Rio fights to honour her dead sister, Rachel; Frangie needs money to support her family, as her father has not been able to work since he was injured; and Jewish Rainy wants to kill Germans and bring down Hitler. For the first time they leave behind their homes and families—to go to war. But not everyone believes that women should be on the front lines and they encounter resistance as well as encouragement.

NHK

NHK (Japanese: 日本放送協会, Hepburn: Nippon Hōsō Kyōkai, official English name: Japan Broadcasting Corporation) is Japan's national public broadcasting organization. NHK, which has always identified itself to its audiences by the English pronunciation of its initials, is a publicly owned corporation funded by viewers' payments of a television license fee.

NHK operates two terrestrial television services (NHK General TV and NHK Educational TV), two satellite television services (NHK BS-1 and NHK BS Premium, both now high-definition television services), and three radio networks (NHK Radio 1, NHK Radio 2, and NHK FM).

Organization

NHK is an independent corporation chartered by the Japanese Broadcasting Act and primarily funded by license fees. NHK World broadcasting (for overseas viewers/listeners) is funded by the Japanese government. The annual budget of NHK is subject to review and approval by the Diet of Japan. The Diet also appoints the 12-member Board of Governors (経営委員会 keiei iinkai) that oversees NHK.
