Mike Maslanka, head nutritionist at the Smithsonian's National Zoo, talks about what it takes to feed 2000 animals from 400 different species 365 days a year. Each one receives a diet specially designed by National Zoo nutritionists that not only meets their nutrient needs but also encourages them to employ their natural feeding behaviors.
The Zoo's commissary is one of the world's largest zoo commissaries and is about half an acre in size.
In all, 13 people make up the Zoos nutrition team. Two members of the team are certified nutritionists. Of all 220 zoo members of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, only 11 have nutritionists, and the National Zoo has two! But thats not the only thing that sets the Zoo apart. The National Zoo is also the only zoo that makes all of its own hay, which is grown at CRC.

While most D.C. residents hunkered down to ride out the storm, at least one was having the time of his life.
The Smithsonian National Zoo shared a video of its giant panda Tian Tian frolicking in the snow Saturday morning. In the video, Tian Tian rolled down a snowy hill, covering himself in the white stuff.
Unfortunately, you won't get to see Tian Tian's snow dance in person. The National Zoo is closed through Sunday because of the severe weather. But hopefully, the adorable video above will hold you over.
Snow will continue to fall across the D.C. metro area Saturday, creating near whiteout conditions when combined with wind gusts of up to 30 mph. A blizzard warning is in effect for the D.C. area until Sunday at 6 a.m.

Today 5 month old Giant Panda cub Bei Bei had his outdoor debut in Yard 2. He was at the door waiting when his mother Mei Xiang came inside, and she encouraged him to go back outside with her. For the 1st time he was able to sink his claws into a tree, and he seemed enchanted with going up and over the limbs of the fir tree just off the patio. He seemed extremely confident as he went about exploring his new environment under the watchful eyes of Mei Xiang, who also appeared very relaxed, after all, this is her 3rd cub.

Mike Maslanka, head nutritionist at the Smithsonian's National Zoo, talks about what it takes to feed 2000 animals from 400 different species 365 days a year. Each one receives a diet specially designed by National Zoo nutritionists that not only meets their nutrient needs but also encourages them to employ their natural feeding behaviors.
The Zoo's commissary is one of the world's largest zoo commissaries and is about half an acre in size.
In all, 13 people make up the Zoos nutrition team. Two members of the team are certified nutritionists. While most D.C. residents hunkered down to ride out the storm, at least one was having the time of his life.
The Smithsonian National Zoo shared a video of its giant panda Tian Tian frolicking in the snow Saturday morning. In the video, Tian Tian rolled down a snowy hill, covering himself in the white stuff.
Unfortunately, you won't get to see Tian Tian's snow dance in person. The National Zoo is closed through Sunday because of the severe weather. But hopefully, the adorable video above will hold you over.
Snow will continue to fall across the D.C. metro area Saturday, creating near whiteout conditions when combined with wind gusts of up to 30 mph. A blizzard warning is in effect for the D.C. area until Sunday at 6 a.m.

The National Zoo is open 364 days a year. There are 2,000 individual animals of 400 different species. Come explore the Zoo and help us celebrate, study, and protect the diversity of animals and their habitats.
Admission to the National Zoo is free. There is a fee for parking in the Zoo lots, but FONZ (Friends of the National Zoo) members park for free! The National Zoo is accessible by Metrorail and Metrobus.
You can visit mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates. Among the African animals at the zoo are the African lion (Panthera leo), Cheetah (Acinonxy jubatus) Western lowland gorilla, Grevy's zebra, Scimitar-norned oryx, Dmaa gazelle, Black and refous giant elephant-shrew, Banded mongoose, Meerkat, Rock hyrax, Damara mole rate, Naked mole-rate, Ring-tailed lemur. The types of birds include the Cattle egret, the Hamrkop, the White stork, the Pygmy falcon, the Watled crane, the Black crake, the Kori bustard, the Red-billed hornbill, the Southern masked weaver, the Lilac-breasted roller and Von der Decken's hornbill. Great cats, Asian elephants, Giant pandas. Invertebrates include sea stars, spiny lobsters, giant African millipedes, tarantulas, the giant Pacific octopus, and the common cuttlefish.

The National Zoo is open 364 days a year. There are 2,000 individual animals of 400 different species. Come explore the Zoo and help us celebrate, study, and protect the diversity of animals and their habitats.
Admission to the National Zoo is free. There is a fee for parking in the Zoo lots, but FONZ (Friends of the National Zoo) members park for free! The National Zoo is accessible by Metrorail and Metrobus.
You can visit mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates. Among the African animals at the zoo are the African lion (Panthera leo), Cheetah (Acinonxy jubatus) Western lowland gorilla, Grevy's zebra, Scimitar-norned oryx, Dmaa gazelle, Black and refous giant elephant-shrew, Banded mongoose, Meerkat, Rock hyrax, Damara mole rate, Naked mole-rate, Ring-tailed lemur. The types of birds include the Cattle egret, the Hamrkop, the White stork, the Pygmy falcon, the Watled crane, the Black crake, the Kori bustard, the Red-billed hornbill, the Southern masked weaver, the Lilac-breasted roller and Von der Decken's hornbill. Great cats, Asian elephants, Giant pandas. Invertebrates include sea stars, spiny lobsters, giant African millipedes, tarantulas, the giant Pacific octopus, and the common cuttlefish.

This is a video of the Hippo, the national animal of Bangladesh. This video was captured in Dhaka Zoo. In this video you guys can see it swimming in the boundary water pool in a rainy morning. People made the pool dirty though. It is always been a good experience for people like me to watch a Hippo swimming in a zoo. and walking on the edge and chasing insects in grass and eat grass. Thanks for watching this video. This is priceless. This hippo farts obnoxiously loud and poos all over the audience.My biggest suggestion is to place two keepers at the observation windows to target & station the hippos (one animal per trainer). It is always been a good experience for people like me to watch a Hippo swimming in a zoo. and walking on the edge and chasing insects in grass and eat grass.

This hippo farts obnoxiously loud and poos all over the audience.My biggest suggestion is to place two keepers at the observation windows to target & station the hippos (one animal per trainer). They probably don't have the staff available, but I think both hippos need equal, consistent attention to make every session positive and productive. Also, the reinforcement response was more delayed than it should be, and therefore not as effective. This is mainly due to the walkie-talkie method. If it were possible to have a speaker system broadcast her live feed to the keepers above the habitat (reinforcing the hippos), they wouldn't have to pause as often to relay instructions. Also, from what I can tell, they aren't using a bridge during training sessions. I think if there were a way for the keeper at the windows to bridge the animals, the current delay of reinforcement wouldn't be as problematic. Perhaps installing a remote button for an underwater tone (or above water tone?) would be possible.
I think some of Tumbo's frustration and leaving the session early was due to trainer confusion. Specifically, what should he do after being targeted, stationed and reinforced in one area?. After all, his trainer/keeper left him to focus on Uma (and help the little boy), so he probably thought it was appropriate to leave as well. Or, his leaving was the first sign of frustration. There doesn't seem to be any protocol on how long a keeper can ignore a hippo in session without it turning into an LRS. I also felt that she could've held the target for him on the far right window a little longer and he might have responded to it.

Footage of giant panda birth at the Smithsonian's National Zoo
As panda cam watchers may have noticed: from Mei's behavior and the sounds we're hearing, we have a giant panda cub! As far as we can tell, the cub was born at about 10:46 p.m. on September 16. According to chief veterinarian Suzan Murray: "Mei Xiang is behaving exactly the same way she did when Tai Shan was born. She is cradling her cub closely , and she looks so tired, but every time she tries to lay down, the cub squawks and she sits right up and cradles the cub more closely. She is the poster child for a perfect panda mom." We believe there is only one cub. If the cub is to have a twin, we should know by sunrise. Animals of the National Zoo, Washington DC
The pictures are shown in the general order that they were taken during our families trip to the National Zoo. I couldn't help taking video and pictures of everything. It was all so amazing! I made most every clip a reasonable length, so you wouldn't get board and so I would be able to show all of the animals that I saw. I think this video came out pretty good. All the animals are so cute! And amazing! Hope you think so too! And I didn't think any music would be necessary, I thought the background noise would be enough. I took all of this a few months ago, and only now remembered to put it together! :) -

As panda cam watchers may have noticed: from Mei's behavior and the sounds we're hearing, we have a giant panda cub!
As far as we can tell, the cub was born at about 10:46 p.m. on September 16. According to chief veterinarian Suzan Murray:
"Mei Xiang is behaving exactly the same way she did when Tai Shan was born. She is cradling her cub closely , and she looks so tired, but every time she tries to lay down, the cub squawks and she sits right up and cradles the cub more closely. She is the poster child for a perfect panda mom."
We believe there is only one cub. If the cub is to have a twin, we should know by sunrise.
For now, the only way animal care staff will monitor the cub is using the web cams. Our goal is for Mei Xiang to raise this cub naturally. With Tai Shan, it wasn't until he was about two weeks old that Mei walked away from him briefly and our veterinary team was able to give him a brief well-cub exam.
