The Jungfrau Railway, a pioneering masterpiece among mountain railways, went into service in 1912. The cogwheel railway takes passengers from Kleine Scheidegg to the Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe, which at 3,454 metres is Europe's highest-altitude railway station in a world of rock, ice and snow. The journey to Europe's highest railway station. Seven of the nine kilometres of railway are in a tunnel hewn in the rock of the Eiger and Mönch. The train stops for five minutes at each of two intermediate stations, the Eigerwand (Eiger Wall) and Eismeer (Sea of Ice), where passengers can marvel at the fascinating mountain world through panorama windows. The Jungfrau Railway climbs a height difference of 1400 metres in around 50 minutes.
This is my second video of this same trip. The other one is a bit more free form and arty/MTV-ish. This is just an "as is" version. More of a verite.

A short video about our trip to the Jungfraujoch, a building set at over 3500 metres above sea-level in the Swiss Alps in between the Eiger and the Jungfrau.
We left London by Eurostar at 7:22 am for Paris where we changed over to Gare de l'Est (about 5 minutes walk) to catch the 14:51 to Strasbourg. We grabbed some lunch at Strasbourg before getting on the 17:01 to Interlaken.
At Interlaken we stayed at the excellent City Hotel Oberland, a three star hotel in the city centre, but before it was light the next morning we were already on the train to Lauterbrunnen to start our way up to the Jungfraujoch. By 08:30 we were at Lauterbrunnen to catch the 09:14 for Kleine Scheidegg where we would catch our last leg train to the top of Europe. Kleine Scheidegg is where mountain climbers would get off to climb the Eiger.
Finally at 10:22 we arrived at the Jungfraujoch, the final part of a highly impressive engineering project begun over 100 years ago. Anyone attempting it today would be considered mad! We were especially fortunate from the weather point of view as there was little wind and no low clouds which enabled me to take some great views of the mountain range. Winds can reach 240 km / hour up here, but even on the relatively warm day we had it was -5 Celsius.
Most shocking was the absence of snow. The ski fields below are clearly marked out by the white dots where the snow cannons are situated. No real snow was forecast either for at least a week.
Choose your time to visit the Jungfraujoch carefully and book ahead as it can be very full at peak periods. You must book a ticket in advance to get up there, otherwise no go.
The way back down was as impressive as the way up, we took a different route from Kleine Scheidegg on the way back to go via Grindelwald and then on along the lakes with the "Golden Pass" panoramic train which was, just as it implies, amazing.
Luzern itself is set alongside the lake of the same name and equally beautiful. See the photos on the Flickr page and on the next video in the next few days.

The hundred-year-old rail line from Kleine Scheidegg to the Jungfraujoch is one of Europe's great engineering wonders, the world's highest subway climbing through four miles of tunnels inside the rock. The beginning of this 50-minute journey is not underground, and momentarily offers a great view; so sit on the right side of the train. The train makes two brief stops enroute to let everyone out for a walk through short tunnels to viewing stations, where you look through windows at the nearby mountain peaks and the landscapes far below.
Upon arrival at the end of the rail line, you walk through an ice tunnel decorated with ice carvings and then approach a sight too amazing for description or film. You really have to pay your dues and go there in person to experience the exhilaration of standing at the top of the world, surrounded by Alpine giants of snow.The observation deck and snowfield are at 11,350 feet, flanked by the jagged peaks of the Jungfrau (13,642 ft.) and the Mönch (13,449 ft.), which form a valley that cradles the Aletsch Galcier, an endless field of snow that stretches 13 miles to the horizon.
Plan on spending an hour or two at the top, playing in the snow and exploring the various levels and exhibits of the visitor center, then catch a convenient train back down the route you came. You return to Kleine Scheidegg, where you can change trains for a different return route that will take you through Wengen and down to Lauterbrunnen.

Jungfrau railway
The Jungfrau railway (German: Jungfraubahn, JB) is a metre gauge (3 ft 3 3⁄8 in gauge) rack railway which runs 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) from Kleine Scheidegg to the highest railway station in Europe at Jungfraujoch (3,454 m), between the Bernese Oberland and Valais in Switzerland. The railway runs almost entirely within the Jungfrau Tunnel, built into the Eiger and Mönch mountains and containing two stations in the middle of the tunnel, where passengers can disembark to observe the neighbouring mountains through windows built into the mountainside. The initial open-air section culminates at Eigergletscher (2,320 m), which makes it the second highest open-air railway in Switzerland. The line is electrified at 3-phase 1,125 volts 50 Hertz, and is one of four lines in the world using three-phase electric power.
At Kleine Scheidegg the JB connects with the Wengernalpbahn (WAB), which has two routes down the mountain, running respectively to the villages of Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald. From both villages, branches of the Berner Oberland Bahn (BOB) connect to the Swiss Federal Railways at Interlaken.

A short video about our trip to the Jungfraujoch, a building set at over 3500 metres above sea-level in the Swiss Alps in between the Eiger and the Jungfrau.
We left London by Eurostar at 7:22 am for Paris where we changed over to Gare de l'Est (about 5 minutes walk) to catch the 14:51 to Strasbourg. We grabbed some lunch at Strasbourg before getting on the 17:01 to Interlaken.
At Interlaken we stayed at the excellent City Hotel Oberland, a three star hotel in the city centre, but before it was light the next morning we were already on the train to Lauterbrunnen to start our way up to the Jungfraujoch. By 08:30 we were at Lauterbrunnen to catch the 09:14 for Kleine Scheidegg where we would catch our last leg train to the top of Europe. Kleine Scheidegg is where mountain climbers would get off to climb the Eiger.
Finally at 10:22 we arrived at the Jungfraujoch, the final part of a highly impressive engineering project begun over 100 years ago. Anyone attempting it today would be considered mad! We were especially fortunate from the weather point of view as there was little wind and no low clouds which enabled me to take some great views of the mountain range. Winds can reach 240 km / hour up here, but even on the relatively warm day we had it was -5 Celsius.
Most shocking was the absence of snow. The ski fields below are clearly marked out by the white dots where the snow cannons are situated. No real snow was forecast either for at least a week.

The beginning of this 50-minute journey is not underground, and momentarily offers a great view; so sit on the right side of the train. The train makes two brief stops enroute to let everyone out for a walk through short tunnels to viewing stations, where you look through windows at the nearby mountain peaks and the landscapes far below.
Upon arrival at the end of the rail line, you walk through an ice tunnel decorated with ice carvings and then approach a sight too amazing for description or film. You really have to pay your dues and go there in person to experience the exhilaration of standing at the top of the world, surrounded by Alpine giants of snow.The observation deck and snowfield are at 11,350 feet, flanked by the jagged peaks of the Jungfrau (13,642 ft.) and the Mönch (13,449 ft.), which form a valley that cradles the Aletsch Galcier, an endless field of snow that stretches 13 miles to the horizon.
Plan on spending an hour or two at the top, playing in the snow and exploring the various levels and exhibits of the visitor center, then catch a convenient train back down the route you came. You return to Kleine Scheidegg, where you can change trains for a different return route that will take you through Wengen and down to Lauterbrunnen.
