Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin again expressed hope that bringing the Belt of the Mother of God to Russia would positively influence demographic situation in the country.

He also said that Orthodox clerics told him that representatives of other religions, including Muslims, came to venerate the Belt.

"Priests asked them why. They answered: "God knows, what if it helps," Putin told.

A 'Walk of Faith', linking a church, mosque and synagogue in the Toxteth area of Liverpool, has been under the auspices of Merseyside Police in an effort to increase links between people holding different religious beliefs.

Bill McAdam, the community engagement sergeant, who heads the force's interfaith group, says: "It's all about community cohesion."
