Dan Robinson gives the second of eight lectures on Reid's Critique of David Hume at Oxford. Is it the case that every simple idea is a "copy" of a simple impression? Hume is but the latest to deny that we have direct access to the external world. This "ideal" theory, relegating ideas to a mental realm whose occupants are but "copies" of some indefinite thing, is the sure path to skepticism.
Under "David Hume", the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy begins with, "The most important philosopher ever to write in English". His most formidable contemporary critic was the fellow Scot, Thomas Reid, the major architect of so-called Scottish Common Sense Philosophy. The most significant features of Hume's work, as understood by Reid, are the representive theory of perception, the nature of causation and causal concepts, the nature of personal identity and the foundations of morality. Each of these topics is presented in a pair of lectures, the first summarizing Hume's position and the second Reid's critique of that position.

Dan Robinson gives the sixth of eight lecture on Reid's critique of David Hume at Oxford. In the third of his "Essays on The Intellectual Powers of Man", Thomas Reid devotes the fourth chapter to the concept of 'identity', and the sixth chapter to Locke's theory of 'personal identity'. This latter chapter is widely regarded as a definitive refutation of the thesis that personal identity is no more than memories of a certain sort, less a "bundle of perceptions". As he says, "This conviction of one's own identity is utterly necessary for all exercise of reason. The operations of reason—whether practical reasoning about what to do or speculative reasoning in the building up of a theory—are made up of successive parts. In any reasoning that I perform, the early parts are the foundation of the later ones, and if I didn't have the conviction that the early parts are propositions that I have approved or written down, I would have no reason to proceed to the later parts in any theoretical or practical project whatever".

"That excellent book by Thomas Reid, the Inquiry into the Human Mind (first edition, 1764; 6th edition, 1810), as a negative proof of the Kantian truths, affords us a very thorough conviction of the inadequacy of the senses to produce the objective perception of things, and also of the non-empirical origin of the perception of space and time. Reid refutes Locke's doctrine that perception is a product of the senses, by a thorough and acute demonstration that the collective sensations of the senses do not bear the least resemblance to the world as known in perception, and especially that the five primary qualities of Locke (extension, form, solidity, movement, and number) absolutely could not be afforded us by any sensation of the senses. Accordingly he gives up the question as to the mode of origination and the source of perception as completely insoluble; and although altogether unacquainted with Kant, he gives us, as it were, according to the regula falsi, a thorough proof of the intellectual nature of perception (really first explained by me as a consequence of the Kantian doctrine), and also of the a priori source, discovered by Kant, of its constituent elements, space, time, and causality, from which those primary qualities of Locke first proceed, but by means of which they are easily constructed. Thomas Reid's book is very instructive and well worth reading—ten times more so than all the philosophy together that has been written since Kant." (Arthur Schopenhauer. "It is evident that a power is a quality, and therefore can't exist without a subject to which it belongs...This (Humean) suggestion— There exists some power that cannot be attributed to any thing, any subject, which has the power —is an absurdity...No principle seems to have been more universally acknowledged by mankind ever since the first dawn of reason than that every change we observe in nature must have a cause...Another argument to show that all men have a notion or idea of active power is that there are many mental operations—performed by everyone who has a mind, and necessary in the ordinary conduct of life—which presuppose that we have active power".

Thomas Reid is one of the greatest minds Scotland has produced: a clergyman, an educator, a philosopher, a natural scientist, and a mathematician, Reid wrote in a clear, unaffected and precise style that anticipates modern prose. Noted in his own time as an important critic of the scepticism of David Hume, Reid proved to be one of the most influential figures in the shaping of philosophy and education in North America in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. After a period of some neglect he is again the subject of much interest among philosophers and historians of ideas. In this lecture Professor John Haldane will an account of Reid's life and thought, celebrating and recommending for our times his approach to understanding human beings and their place in nature.

The trees were shading us from the bright morning sun as we drove to Thomas Reid Ebner's house in Nashville last week. We were going to capture a new Single Session. Upon arriving, we were greeted with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafting through the screen door as we began to carry in heavy camera cases and lighting equipment. We set up in Tom's living room, a cozy room displaying a collection of artifacts ranging from old cameras and photographs, hardbound books with yellowed pages, the Washington state flag, and one lonely betta fish on the mantle above the fireplace. Thomas Reid
Thomas Reid FRSE (/riːd/; 26 April 1710 – 7 October 1796) was a religiously trained Scottish philosopher, a contemporary of David Hume as well as "Hume's earliest and fiercest critic." He was the founder of the Scottish School of Common Sense and played an integral role in the Scottish Enlightenment. The early part of his life was spent in Aberdeen and he graduated from the University of Aberdeen. He began his career as a Minister of the Church of Scotland but ceased to be a Minister (or called 'Reverend') when he was given a professorship at King's College, Aberdeen in 1752. He obtained his doctorate and wrote An Inquiry Into the Human Mind on the Principles of Common Sense (published in 1764). He and his colleagues founded the 'Aberdeen Philosophical Society' which was popularly known as the 'Wise Club' (a literary-philosophical association). Shortly after the publication of his first book, he was given the prestigious Professorship of Moral Philosophy at the University of Glasgow when he was called to replace Adam Smith. He resigned from this position in 1781, after which he prepared his university lectures for publication in two books: Essays on the Intellectual Powers of Man (1785) and Essays on the Active Powers of the Human Mind (1788). Reid was buried at Blackfriars Church in the grounds of Glasgow College and when the university moved to Gilmorehill in the west of Glasgow, his tombstone was inserted in the main building. Phil Wickham
Philip David "Phil" Wickham (born April 5, 1984) is a Contemporary Christian vocalist/songwriter and guitarist from San Diego, California. Wickham has released seven CDs, Give You My World in 2003, a self-titled album in 2006, Cannons in 2007, Singalong in 2008, Heaven & Earth in 2009,Response in 2011, and Singalong 2 in 2012, The Ascension in 2013. He has also led worship at Soul Survivor.
Biography
Early Years
Philip was raised in a Christian home, the second of three children (brother Evan Wickham, sister Jillian Wickham), and after feeling the need to "make his faith his own" he began leading worship for his youth group at 13 years of age. He graduated from Calvary Christian School in Vista, California. Wickham's father is currently a worship leader, and both of his parents were at one time members of Jesus movement band Parable. His older brother Evan Wickham is also a musician who used to serve at Calvary Chapel in Vista, and now currently serves at A Jesus Church-Westside, Portland, OR. His parents, John and Lisa (née, Irwin), encouraged Wickham to learn popular praise songs and to write his own. Wickham began his full-time music career by touring California and recording his first album. On November 2, 2008, Wickham married his longtime girlfriend, Mallory Plotnik. They have three daughters.

Plot: Adult siblings Thomas Reid and Natalie Reid have been estranged for years following the death of their father from cancer. He left the bulk of his estate to Thomas and Natalie's disabled brother Daniel, a move which Natalie understood but which Thomas felt unfair. Thomas' contesting of the will is the source of their estrangement. Thomas receives news from their family doctor that he too has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, and hopes that Natalie will show some compassion in him living out his final days in comfort by trying to get some of their father's money from Daniel. Against her wishes, Thomas visits Natalie at her securities firm office, which places her in an awkward position. But Thomas will do whatever he can, including using information lying on Natalie's desk, to ensure his final days are spent in comfort. What Thomas does not know is that he will receive some imminent news which will alter the course of his life.

The trees were shading us from the bright morning sun as we drove to Thomas Reid Ebner's house in Nashville last week. We were going to capture a new Single Session. Upon arriving, we were greeted with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafting through the screen door as we began to carry in heavy camera cases and lighting equipment. We set up in Tom's living room, a cozy room displaying a collection of artifacts ranging from old cameras and photographs, hardbound books with yellowed pages, the Washington state flag, and one lonely betta fish on the mantle above the fireplace. Professor Dan Robinson gives the fourth of eight lectures on Thomas Reid's critique of David Hume at Oxford. "It is evident that a power is a quality, and therefore can't exist without a subject to which it belongs...This (Humean) suggestion— There exists some power that cannot be attributed to any thing, any subject, which has the power —is an absurdity...No principle seems to have been more universally acknowledged by mankind ever since the first dawn of reason than that every change we observe in nature must have a cause...Another argument to show that all men have a notion or idea of active power is that there are many mental operations—performed by everyone who has a mind, and necessary in the ordinary conduct of life—which presuppose that we have active power".
Under "David Hume", the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy begins with, "The most important philosopher ever to write in English". His most formidable contemporary critic was the fellow Scot, Thomas Reid, the major architect of so-called Scottish Common Sense Philosophy. The most significant features of Hume's work, as understood by Reid, are the representive theory of perception, the nature of causation and causal concepts, the nature of personal identity and the foundations of morality. Each of these topics is presented in a pair of lectures, the first summarizing Hume's position and the second Reid's critique of that position.

Noted in his own time as an important critic of the scepticism of David Hume, Reid proved to be one of the most influential figures in the shaping of philosophy and education in North America in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. After a period of some neglect he is again the subject of much interest among philosophers and historians of ideas. In this lecture Professor John Haldane will an account of Reid's life and thought, celebrating and recommending for our times his approach to understanding human beings and their place in nature.

The trees were shading us from the bright morning sun as we drove to Thomas Reid Ebner's house in Nashville last week. We were going to capture a new Single Session. Upon arriving, we were greeted with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafting through the screen door as we began to carry in heavy camera cases and lighting equipment. We set up in Tom's living room, a cozy room displaying a collection of artifacts ranging from old cameras and photographs, hardbound books with yellowed pages, the Washington state flag, and one lonely betta fish on the mantle above the fireplace. Tom shared a new song with us in that room, and it is our pleasure to share it with you now. Please consider sharing, and, as always, we hope you enjoy.

Dan Robinson gives the last and final lecture on Reid's critique of David Hume at Oxford. "Like all other sciences, morals must have first principles, and all moral reasoning is based on them... In all rational belief, the thing believed is either a first principle or something inferred by valid reasoning from first principles". As for utility, "Suppose that mice rescue the distressed person by chewing through the cords that bound him. Is there moral goodness in this act of the mice?" Beyond the armchair and other precincts of untrammeled speculation, one finds that, there is little purchase on a morality of pleasure and utility. Indeed, "If what we call 'moral judgment' isn't really a judgment but merely a feeling, it follows that the moral principles that we have been taught to consider as an immutable law to all intelligent beings have no basis except an arbitrary structure and fabric in the constitution of the human mind...Thus, by a change in our structure immoral things could become moral...There are beings who can't perceive mathematical truths; but no defect, no error of understanding, can make what is true to be false".
Under "David Hume", the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy begins with, "The most important philosopher ever to write in English". His most formidable contemporary critic was the fellow Scot, Thomas Reid, the major architect of so-called Scottish Common Sense Philosophy. The most significant features of Hume's work, as understood by Reid, are the representive theory of perception, the nature of causation and causal concepts, the nature of personal identity and the foundations of morality. Each of these topics is presented in a pair of lectures, the first summarizing Hume's position and the second Reid's critique of that position.
