Montego Bay is the capital of St. James Parish and the second largest city in Jamaica by area and the fourth by population (after Kingston, Spanish Town and Portmore).
It is a tourist destination with duty free shopping, cruise line terminal and the beaches. The city is backed by picturesque low mountains.
Christopher Columbus, when he first visited the island in 1494, named the bay Golfo de Buen Tiempo ('Fair Weather Gulf') The name "Montego Bay" is believed to have originated as a corruption of the Spanish word manteca ("lard"), allegedly because during the Spanish period it was the port where lard, leather, and beef were exported.[citation needed] Jamaica was a colony of Spain from 1511 until 1655, when Oliver Cromwell's Caribbean expedition, the Western Design, drove the Spanish from the island.
During the epoch of slavery, from the mid-17th century until 1834, and well into the 20th century, the town functioned primarily as a sugar port. The island's last major slave revolt, the Christmas Rebellion or Baptist War (1831–1832) took place in the area around Montego Bay; the leader of the revolt, Samuel Sharpe, was hanged there in 1832. In 1975, Sharpe was proclaimed a national hero of Jamaica, and the main square of the town was renamed in his honor.

This is for those who miss the warm weather. I always liked this "pseudo-Reggae" song; I think that two-note bass line is exceptionally cool. But I always hated the ending; it stops abruptly, and Bobby Bloom starts singing, "Oh, what a beautiful morning..." I guess he was inspired, but I think his inspiration ruined the track. So I re-edited it by completely removing the ending, then extended it with a few loops, and by repeating the first verse. The song then fades out on the intro. The video was constructed using the lyrics and stills found on the www; I used the auto-zoom function to give it the illusion of movement -- but don't be fooled by that, they're still stills. No infringement intended; if an owner of an image prefer it not be used in this video, please let me know and I will remove it immediately. [Note: I played the video once to verify it was uploaded correctly, but found many of the edits are not as I intended. I'm letting it go; this post is more about the unique edit of the song than the visuals, anyway.]

Montego Bay (Re-edit/Remix) - Bobby Bloom
This is for those who miss the warm weather. I always liked this "pseudo-Reggae" song; I think that two-note bass line is exceptionally cool. But I always hated the ending; it stops abruptly, and Bobby Bloom starts singing, "Oh, what a beautiful morning..." I guess he was inspired, but I think his inspiration ruined the track. So I re-edited it by completely removing the ending, then extended it with a few loops, and by repeating the first verse. The song then fades out on the intro. The video was constructed using the lyrics and stills found on the www; I used the auto-zoom function to give it the illusion of movement -- but don't be fooled by that, they're still stills. No infringement intended; if an owner of an image prefer it not be used in this video, please let me know a... -

My first day in Montego Bay after not sleeping and landing. What to do first, sleep, eat or go to the beach? I am with a tour guide from The Bethel Court who is showing me around Montego Bay on my first day. Horseback Ride and Swim Montego Bay, Jamaica
This is the swim portion of the Horseback Ride and Swim shore excursion when our Carnival Magic stopped at Montego Bay, Jamaica. This was our first time riding horses and it certainly was a unique and memorable experience. At the beginning they gave us instructions on how to control and horses and made us go in circles to get acquainted with them. The tour guide we had was very informative. After riding near a hilly and dry river bed area, we got to ride in the ocean as this video depicts. I would recommend this excursion, especially if you haven't ridden a horse before.

Dunn`s River Falls is the name of a waterfall near to Ochos Rios, one of the island’s most well known natural attractions. In swimming attire, more than a million annual visitors attempt to climb through spraying torrents of water whilst linking hands in a human chain. In foaming cascades, the water plunges 200 metres down toward the sea over step-shaped limestone blocks and across an overgrown landscape of ferns and plants. Harmony Hall, a Victorian building that is a reminder of British colonial rule, is the name of an immaculate manor house located on a turn of the century plantation. Today it contains a handicraft centre and also a gallery which displays the works of indigenous artists. James Bond Beach is the name of the former winter retreat of the English author, Ian Fleming, who created British secret agent, James Bond. The famous author wrote most of his fourteen 007 novels on the small island of Golden Eye, of which five were set in Jamaica. Montego Bay is Jamaica’s second largest city which, at the end of the 18th century, was one of the most important harbours for the island’s sugar industry. The lively city centre is a mixture of both old and new with modern concrete houses located next to simple wooden huts and congested streets with numerous small shops and street traders.Close to Falmouth, there’s the excitement of Martha Brae River Rafting which is an excellent way to explore this tropical paradise in which dense tropical rain forest shows off all its spectacular colours. It was here on the north coast that Christopher Columbus landed in1502 and where the Spanish were defeated by the British in a bloody battle for sovereign control of the island. Dunn`s River Falls is the name of a waterfall near to Ochos Rios, one of the island’s most well known natural attractions. In swimming attire, more than a million annual visitors attempt to climb through spraying torrents of water whilst linking hands in a human chain. In foaming cascades, the water plunges 200 metres down toward the sea over step-shaped limestone blocks and across an overgrown landscape of ferns and plants. Harmony Hall, a Victorian building that is a reminder of British colonial rule, is the name of an immaculate manor house located on a turn of the century plantation. Today it contains a handicraft centre and also a gallery which displays the works of indigenous artists. James Bond Beach is the name of the former winter retreat of the English author, Ian Fleming, who created British secret agent, James Bond. The famous author wrote most of his fourteen 007 novels on the small island of Golden Eye, of which five were set in Jamaica. In addition to bananas, citrus fruits, papayas, melons and apples, various spices are also cultivated on the plantation. This was my very first trip alone outside of the US. Very daring but very adventurous. Despite going in the middle of Hurricane Season, Tropical storm Issaac missed Jamaica and Atlanta and it only rained twice the whole time. :) Not only did i do everything i wanted but i also did everything i wanted within a set budget. I got the opportunity to see Montego Bay, Ocho Rios where i stayed, Negril overnight, and Kingston in just four days. Even though I spend half my time on the road, the road traveling allowed me to see a lot of the heart of Jamaica. I am happy to say that I spend my 24th birthday just 3 weeks after Jamaicas 50th independence day and Usain Bolts recent Olympic Victories. I have much respect for Jamaican people, lifestyle and culture as much of the island is poor. In addition to rich culture and beauty, Jamaica is home to great music. Aside from wishing i stayed in Negril for a second night, this trip was a huge accomplishment in regards to future travel alone. I learned how to use other currency versus my own and i know how I should blend in with locals if necessary. lol
Happy Travels and I wish peace, love, and prosperity to this beautiful island. ONE LOVE

My first day in Montego Bay after not sleeping and landing. What to do first, sleep, eat or go to the beach? I am with a tour guide from The Bethel Court who is showing me around Montego Bay on my first day. We went to eat baked chicken with rice & peas, to the beach, to a reggae bar on hip strip, through downtown Mobay and then back to the hostel. It was there I met a fellow backpacker from the States. The White Witch is a legendary story of a haunting in Jamaica. According to the legend, the spirit of "Annie Palmer" haunts the grounds of Rose Hall Plantation near Montego Bay. The story states that she was born in England to an English mother and Irish father and spent most of her life in Haiti. When her parents died of yellow fever, she was adopted by a nanny who taught her witchcraft and voodoo. She moved to Jamaica and married John Palmer, owner of Rose Hall Plantation. Annie murdered Palmer along with two subsequent husbands and numerous male plantation slaves, later being murdered herself by a slave named "Takoo". A song about the legend called "The Ballad of Annie Palmer" was recorded by Johnny Cash.
Rose Hall is a Georgian mansion built in the 1770s and restored in the 1960s. It is decorated with silk wallpaper printed with palms and birds, ornamented with chandeliers, furnished with mostly European antiques, and features a downstairs bar and restaurant.
The story was fictionalized, modeled on the title character in a famous Jamaican novel, The White Witch of Rosehall by Herbert G. de Lisser, published in 1929
Rose Hall is widely regarded to be a visually impressive house and the most famous in Jamaica. It is a mansion in Jamaican Georgian style with a stone base and a plastered upper storey, high on the hillside, with a panorama view over the coast. It was built in the 1770s at a cost of about £30,000 and subsequently became the property of John Palmer. Hakewill visited the building and wrote:
"It is placed at a delightful elevation, and commands a very extensive sea view. Its general appearance has much of the character of a handsome Italian villa. A double flight of stone steps leads to an open portico, giving access to the entrance hall; on the left of which is the eating-room, and on the right the drawing-room, behind which are other apartments for domestic uses. The right wing, fitted up with great elegance, and enriched with painting and gilding, was the private apartment of the late Mrs. Palmer, and the left wing is occupied as servants’ apartments and offices. The principal staircase, in the body of the house, is a specimen of joinery in mahogany and other costly woods seldom excelled, and leads to a suite of chambers in the upper story."
Rose Hall was restored in the 1960s to its former splendor, with mahogany floors, interior windows and doorways, paneling and wooden ceilings. This is the swim portion of the Horseback Ride and Swim shore excursion when our Carnival Magic stopped at Montego Bay, Jamaica. This was our first time riding horses and it certainly was a unique and memorable experience. At the beginning they gave us instructions on how to control and horses and made us go in circles to get acquainted with them. The tour guide we had was very informative. After riding near a hilly and dry river bed area, we got to ride in the ocean as this video depicts. I would recommend this excursion, especially if you haven't ridden a horse before.
