The cottonmouth (aka water moccasin) is an opportunistic feeder, sometimes described as "omnicarnivorous". Its diet includes mammals, birds, amphibians, fish, snakes, small turtles and small alligators. These snake do not hesitate to prey on venomous like rattlesnakes or copperheads. Cannibalism is a frequent occurrence between this species as well as the feeding on carrion. But in general its diet consists of fish and frogs. Fish are captured by cornering them in shallow water, usually against the bank or under logs. They take advantage when bodies of water begin to dry up in the summer or early fall and gorge themselves on the resulting high concentrations of fish and tadpoles.
Frogs and small birds are seized and held until movement stopped. Larger prey will be approached in a more cautious manner; a rapid strike will be executed after which the snake withdraws. Young individuals have yellowish or greenish tail tips and engage in caudal luring. The tail tip is wriggled to lure prey, such as frogs and lizards, within striking distance.

The video I captured of the rattlesnake in the video is a canebrake rattlesnake. Justin, by contrast was bitten by a Western Diamondback.
Crotalus horridus, commonly known as timber rattlesnake, canebrake rattlesnake or banded rattlesnake,[3] is a species of venomous pit viper found in the eastern United States.
Justin says: My hand now has fully mobility and is about 80% as strong as it was before, thanks to my Dad and I resuming our rock climbing after a 1 year break due to the lack of strength in my left hand. I use it for about 90% of the things I used to do with my left hand (I am right handed). 13 surgeries, $700,000 worth of helicopter flights, surgeries, and hospital stays (paid by my insurance of course), and 20 months later, I am very happy with the outcome of this experience and my good fortune of getting through all this without any significant loss.

"On July 21, 2002, just after my 13th birthday, I was bitten by a Northern Pacific rattlesnake (the snake was originally identified as a Western Diamondback rattlesnake, but that species is not found near Yosemite). I was located on a trail in a hiking area near Yosemite National Park, California. The bite occurred when I was sitting on a small boulder at a distance of 4.5 miles from the trailhead with my cabin group at camp. I had my arms dangling at my side, and a 5 foot long rattlesnake bit me in the middle of my left palm."

I actually had a bias when I made this video. I hoped I would find that the rattlesnake was the dominant predator. However, it turns out that cobras seem to have a stronger venom, and the largest cobras are bigger than rattlesnake. A rattlesnake seems thicker and more muscular than a cobra though. That rattle also strikes fear into the heart of many. Which do you think is the tougher snake? Please comment below!
Both rattlesnakes and cobras are venomous. Rattlesnakes have hemotoxic venom. This venom destroys tissue, degenerates organs and disrupts blood clotting. Without treatment, a rattlesnake bite to a human can result in the loss of a limb or death.
All species of cobra can also deliver a fatal bite to a human being. Cobras have strong neurotoxic venom that attacks the nervous system and causes paralysis. Some species of cobra also have venom with hemotoxic features and some species posses the unique ability to spit their venom.

After a day of searching for the famously dangerous Northern Pacific Rattlesnake Coyote Peterson finally stumbles upon one in the 11th hour of filming in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The only problem is, it was already escaping into the rocks!
Refusing to let it get away without a closer look, Coyote pushes the limits by sticking his hands underneath a boulder where he can't see! Make no mistake, this is one very risky grab and catch that you aren't going to want to miss!

Rattlesnakes are a group of venomous snakes of the genera Crotalus and Sistrurus of the subfamily Crotalinae ("pit vipers"). There are 32 known species of rattlesnake, with between 65-70 subspecies, all native to the Americas, ranging from southern Alberta and southern British Columbia in Canada to Central Argentina.
Rattlesnakes are predators who live in a wide array of habitats, hunting small animals such as birds and rodents. They kill their prey with a venomous bite, rather than by constricting. All rattlesnakes possess a set of fangs with which they inject large quantities of hemotoxic venom. The venom travels through the bloodstream, destroying tissue and causing swelling, internal bleeding, and intense pain. Some species, such as the Mojave Rattlesnake, additionally possess a neurotoxic component in their venom that causes paralysis and other nervous symptoms.
The threat of envenomation, advertised by the loud shaking of the titular noisemaker at the end of their tail, deters many predators. However, rattlesnakes fall prey to hawks, weasels, king snakes, and a variety of other species. Rattlesnakes are heavily preyed upon as neonates, while they are still weak and mentally immature. Very large numbers of rattlesnakes are killed by humans. Rattlesnake populations in many areas are severely threatened by habitat destruction, poaching, and extermination campaigns.

I actually had a bias when I made this video. I hoped I would find that the rattlesnake was the dominant predator. However, it turns out that cobras seem to have a stronger venom, and the largest cobras are bigger than rattlesnake. A rattlesnake seems thicker and more muscular than a cobra though. Its diet includes mammals, birds, amphibians, fish, snakes, small turtles and small alligators. These snake do not hesitate to prey on venomous like rattlesnakes or copperheads. Cannibalism is a frequent occurrence between this species as well as the feeding on carrion. But in general its diet consists of fish and frogs. Fish are captured by cornering them in shallow water, usually against the bank or under logs. They take advantage when bodies of water begin to dry up in the summer or early fall and gorge themselves on the resulting high concentrations of fish and tadpoles.
Frogs and small birds are seized and held until movement stopped. Larger prey will be approached in a more cautious manner; a rapid strike will be executed after which the snake withdraws. Young individuals have yellowish or greenish tail tips and engage in caudal luring. The tail tip is wriggled to lure prey, such as frogs and lizards, within striking distance.

Justin says: My hand now has fully mobility and is about 80% as strong as it was before, thanks to my Dad and I resuming our rock climbing after a 1 year break due to the lack of strength in my left hand. I use it for about 90% of the things I used to do with my left hand (I am right handed). 13 surgeries, $700,000 worth of helicopter flights, surgeries, and hospital stays (paid by my insurance of course), and 20 months later, I am very happy with the outcome of this experience and my good fortune of getting through all this without any significant loss.

I actually had a bias when I made this video. I hoped I would find that the rattlesnake was the dominant predator. However, it turns out that cobras seem to have a stronger venom, and the largest cobras are bigger than rattlesnake. A rattlesnake seems thicker and more muscular than a cobra though. That rattle also strikes fear into the heart of many. Which do you think is the tougher snake? Please comment below!
Both rattlesnakes and cobras are venomous. Rattlesnakes have hemotoxic venom. This venom destroys tissue, degenerates organs and disrupts blood clotting. Without treatment, a rattlesnake bite to a human can result in the loss of a limb or death.
All species of cobra can also deliver a fatal bite to a human being. Cobras have strong neurotoxic venom that attacks the nervous system and causes paralysis. Some species of cobra also have venom with hemotoxic features and some species posses the unique ability to spit their venom.

Understand that I do not condone the senseless killing of rattlesnakes due to the ignorant immoral hatred that some people seem to be afflicted with. If you are out in the forest, leave them alone. If a snake must be removed... at least use the skin and eat the meat instead of chopping it into tiny pieces while screaming war cries or scripture.
Snake meat contains om average 93 calories per 3.5 oz) of raw meat. This is roughly half the calories and one third the amount of fat of a similar amount of sirloin beef steak.

Sometimes the best animal encounters happen right at your feet, that is as long as you look down in time! In this episode Coyote stumbles upon a Baby Western Diamondback Rattlesnake, but don't be fooled...just because of its size doesn't mean it is not as potentially deadly as an adult.
That said, juvenile vipers are some of the coolest looking snakes around but also some of the most fragile so Coyote has to use extreme caution when handling it to show to the cameras...however when working with a baby snake that is armed with serious venom that is far easier said than done!
