Ghana, West Africa, was a British colony called "Gold Coast" until 1957. It became the first independent country in "black" Africa after reforms and struggles in the 1940s and 1950s. The new president, the brilliant Kwame Nkrumah, and his Convention People's Party (CPP), had fought for independence. Now they aimed at major changes in the society, even speaking of socialism. And Nkrumah proposed a united African government for the continent: Pan-Africanism. But by the mid-1960s, hopes were fading. There were good reforms in education and services and self- respect for Africans that helped remove colonialism's damages. But the CPP has become a dictatorship, with a personality cult around Nkrumah. Unions and struggles were suppressed. The economy was in trouble. A new elite hijacked independence and resources. When the military seized power in 1966, people celebrated in the streets. Today Ghana is one of the poorest African countries. Roughly 50 years ago we saw the dismantling of most of the European colonial empires in Africa. High hopes greeted the "new nations" that merged - and certainly, a move from colonial rule, with its racism and external control and extractive economies, was progressive. However, many of the hopes were soon dashed. Politically, most independent African states moved in the direction of dictatorships and one-party systems, normally headed by the nationalist party that took office at independence - and, over time, the military became a major player too. Desde el inicio de año ha venido rondando en diferentes expresiones organizativas la iniciativa de responder al detrimento de las condiciones de vida de gran parte de la población con una gran jornada nacional de protesta que se ha venido pensando bajo la figura de construir un gran “Paro Nacional”. Después de la fragmentada y poco convocante jornada del 24 de Enero, el escenario hoy parece más favorable al alcanzarse niveles de unidad y convocatoria más relevantes que dejan una sensación de optimismo frente a las posibilidades que puede abrir esta jornada nacional del 17 marzo: En parte por la reactivación y nivel de unidad que representa el Comando Nacional Unitario (CNU) que recoge a las principales centrales sindicales junto al gremio de las pensionadas, pero también por la perspectiva multisectorial de la convocatoria en la que participan los referentes organizativos del mundo rural, como lo es la Cumbre Agraria: Campesina, Étnica y Popular que logró importantes victorias en el 2013, incluyendo no solo sectores a campesinos, sino también indígenas y negros; el sector del transporte como lo es la “cruzada camionera” y el gremio de los taxistas, junto a una amalgama heterogénea de ciudadanas que han venido fomentando diversas iniciativas cívicas. ... read full story / add a comment

Quanto à posição de quem está na rua como lacerdistas: ou a direita que está na rua eleva os níveis de protesto, realizando atos de violência e "vandalismo" (ao menos na Esplanada e em frente ao Palácio do Planalto), intensificando algum grau de conflito também em São Paulo capital e Grande São Paulo, ou não vão gerar a comoção de irracionalidade e sentido de "justiça" que tanto gostam de proclamar. Isso é o que faz a direita escuálida venezuelana, protestos violentos denominados lá de guarimba, e aqui de "vandalismo". On the twelfth year of joined struggle in Bil'in it lost its glamour. Many of the activists lost the excitement of the direct action confrontation which is not a new thing any more. The expansion of the joint struggle to other locations and the expanding of the non armed struggle in the west bank contributed to it too. Η συμμετοχή του στην απεργία είχε να κάνει με τις διεκδικήσεις που προβάλλονταν: όχι άλλη ανεργία, όχι αντεργατικές μεταρρυθμίσεις, όχι περικοπές στα κοινωνικά αγαθά, όχι ιδιωτικοποιήσεις σε υγεία, εκπαίδευση κτλ.
