The largest container ship ever to call at a North American port arrived at the Port of Los Angeles on Saturday, December 26. Launched by the French shipping line CMA CGM on December 10, the CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin is 1,300 feet long, 177 feet wide and has the capacity of nearly 18,000 containers.

Crane Operators are the "Point of Production" for the US economy. From the beginning of the shift with the first move to the end of the shift with the last move at California United Terminals Berth 406 in the Port of Los Angeles. Proud American ILWU Local 13 member. The ports of LA/LB have over 230 Hammerhead cranes, every one is different with its own personality. I'm just trying to be a better operator from how I operated yesterday. I'm still learning the tricks of the trade. Currently these are the nicest and smoothest HammerHeads on the waterfront. For being ZPMC cranes these must be of a higher quality.

The Port of Los Angeles may not seem like a great place to screw around but if you are a true aficionado of screwing around you know screwing around in places this off limits is the best screwing around there is! Requiring using a drone to get into forbidden places and even a helicopter this is some real screwing around. AND we now have a whole file on us at Homeland Security!

...a row truck is on the roads, it takes cargo probably to a destination within 200 miles.
These trucks are no more than 5 years old.
They have to have the latest engines, low pollution burning diesel.
We have no old clunkers anymore driving around the port.
All the trucks are new and clean,
on and off the port.
The way it works here is
there’s no ship here in this part of the dock.
Cargo is coming in, most of the cargo that is coming in now that you see is for export.
Empty containers or containers for cargo export will go on the front of the dock,
and as they unload the ship the cargo they’ve taken off of the ship will go to the back of the facility.
Where it is much easier to manipulate it and load it on trains or onto trucks.
Just a matter of interest the harbor commission has adopted a budget plan of about $1.1 million for the fiscal years 2013, 2014

About $4 million dollars or 37% of that budget is going to be used to support about 8,500 jobs, which are linked to the major construction site projects in and around the port.
For example, this facility here, this is [...] Evergreen.
What we are going to spend here is about $96 million dollars, behind Evergreen (which backs onto APL),
and we are going to do what is called backland development behind, put in more surface areas, more […] areas for containers, more access roads.
I was talking earlier about the trucks that longshoremen drive, and if you look on the side now, you actually see these small universal trailer receivers (UTRs),
that’s the white truck with the flashing red or white light on top of it.

Basically what happened is the ship will come in, the cranes pull alongside, under each crane there is a designated roadway.
So for example, if this ship had 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 cranes on it, there would be seven designated roads underneath each crane.
The truck comes in, he will have lane 1, lane 2, lane 3, lane 4, and that’s the only lane he will move in.
The operator of the crane will swing the cargo back, into lane 6 or 7 and there will be a truck there waiting to pick up that cargo and take it somewhere else.
These gentlemen that work in these cranes are very well paid, and make up to a $250,000 a year.
And it is important that they have the best guys unload these containers because it costs the ship so much money to stay in the port.
At the moment the ship isn't making any money because it is not going anywhere, it has already had its cargo paid for, so it wants itself unloaded, reloaded and leaving.
If you look you up in here you see a variety of colors of containers. The only ones of really any significance are the white ones.
The white containers are temperature controlled containers. They are like refrigeration trucks.
They have a small motor on the back that will be plugged into the ship and they can move goods that need to be […] climate controlled.
If you are bringing in, say, vegetables, salads, meat or fish,
it needs to be in one of these containers and it will be in a contained area.
Once it is unloaded off the ship it is put onto a truck
and it is able to be plugged into the back of the container and keeps the temperature at all times at the correct level...

On Saturday, March 19, the Port of Los Angeles hosted its first Bike Rodeo giving families a chance to explore the LA Waterfront on two wheels. City of Los Angeles Councilman Joe Buscaino officially opened the event to bicycle riders of all ages, who had the opportunity to learn about proper bicycle safety. As bike lanes are increasing throughout the City of Los Angeles, it’s important we all know the importance of staying safe on the road. Nonprofit organization Safe Moves gave traffic safety tips for younger cyclists, and the Los Angeles Port Police and Los Angeles Fire Department Bicycle Medic Team held demonstrations for all attendees. The Bike Palace, a local bike shop in San Pedro, was also on-hand to provide free safety checks and LADWP provided free water stations. The event concluded with a group ride overlooking the beautiful Cabrillo Marina. The Port of Los Angeles, also called Los Angeles Harbor and WORLDPORT L.A, is a port complex that occupies 7,500 acres (3,000 ha) of land and water along 43 mi (69 km) of waterfront. The port is located on San Pedro Bay in the San Pedro neighborhood of Los Angeles, approximately 20 mi (32 km) south of downtown. The Port of Los Angeles adjoins the separate Port of Long Beach, employs over 16,000 people, and is the busiest container port in the United States. For public safety, the Port of Los Angeles utilizes the Los Angeles Port Police to fight crime and terrorism, and the Los Angeles City Lifeguards to provide lifeguarding services for inner Cabrillo Beach.
In 1542, Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo discovered the "Bay of Smokes". The south-facing San Pedro Bay was originally a shallow mudflat, too soft to support a wharf. Visiting ships had two choices: stay far out at anchor and have their goods and passengers ferried to shore; or beach themselves. That sticky process is described in Two Years Before the Mast by Richard Henry Dana, Jr., who was a crew member on an 1834 voyage that visited San Pedro Bay. Phineas Banning greatly improved shipping when he dredged the channel to Wilmington in 1871 to a depth of 10 feet (3.0 m). The port handled 50,000 tons of shipping that year. Banning owned a stagecoach line with routes connecting San Pedro to Salt Lake City, Utah and to Yuma, Arizona, and in 1868 he built a railroad to connect San Pedro Bay to Los Angeles, the first in the area.

Benjamin Franklin (January 17, 1706 [O.S. January 6, 1705] – April 17, 1790) was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Port of Los Angeles: Arrival of CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin
The largest container ship ever to call at a North American port arrived at the Port of Los Angeles on Saturday, December 26. Launched by the French shipping line CMA CGM on December 10, the CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin is 1,300 feet long, 177 feet wide and has the capacity of nearly 18,000 containers. -

A Day In The Life Of A Crane Operator At The Port Of Los Angeles
Crane Operators are the "Point of Production" for the US economy. From the beginning of the shift with the first move to the end of the shift with the last move at California United Terminals Berth 406 in the Port of Los Angeles. Proud American ILWU Local 13 member. The ports of LA/LB have over 230 Hammerhead cranes, every one is different with its own personality. I'm just trying to be a better operator from how I operated yesterday. I'm still learning the tricks of the trade. Currently these are the nicest and smoothest HammerHeads on the waterfront. For being ZPMC cranes these must be of a higher quality. -

These trucks are no more than 5 years old. They have to have the latest engines, low pollution burning diesel. We have no old clunkers anymore driving around the port. All the trucks are new and clean, on and off the port. The way it works here is there’s no ship here in this part of the dock. Cargo is coming in, most of the cargo that is coming in now that you see is for export. Empty containers or containers for cargo export will go on the front of the dock, and as they unload the ship the cargo they’ve taken off of the ship will go to the back of the facility. On Saturday, March 19, the Port of Los Angeles hosted its first Bike Rodeo giving families a chance to explore the LA Waterfront on two wheels. City of Los Angeles Councilman Joe Buscaino officially opened the event to bicycle riders of all ages, who had the opportunity to learn about proper bicycle safety. As bike lanes are increasing throughout the City of Los Angeles, it’s important we all know the importance of staying safe on the road. Nonprofit organization Safe Moves gave traffic safety tips for younger cyclists, and the Los Angeles Port Police and Los Angeles Fire Department Bicycle Medic Team held demonstrations for all attendees. These trucks are no more than 5 years old.
They have to have the latest engines, low pollution burning diesel.
We have no old clunkers anymore driving around the port.
All the trucks are new and clean,
on and off the port.
The way it works here is
there’s no ship here in this part of the dock.
Cargo is coming in, most of the cargo that is coming in now that you see is for export.
Empty containers or containers for cargo export will go on the front of the dock,
and as they unload the ship the cargo they’ve taken off of the ship will go to the back of the facility.
Where it is much easier to manipulate it and load it on trains or onto trucks.
Just a matter of interest the harbor commission has adopted a budget plan of about $1.1 million for the fiscal years 2013, 2014

About $4 million dollars or 37% of that budget is going to be used to support about 8,500 jobs, which are linked to the major construction site projects in and around the port.

and we are going to do what is called backland development behind, put in more surface areas, more […] areas for containers, more access roads.
I was talking earlier about the trucks that longshoremen drive, and if you look on the side now, you actually see these small universal trailer receivers (UTRs),
that’s the white truck with the flashing red or white light on top of it.

Basically what happened is the ship will come in, the cranes pull alongside, under each crane there is a designated roadway.
So for example, if this ship had 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 cranes on it, there would be seven designated roads underneath each crane.
The truck comes in, he will have lane 1, lane 2, lane 3, lane 4, and that’s the only lane he will move in.
The operator of the crane will swing the cargo back, into lane 6 or 7 and there will be a truck there waiting to pick up that cargo and take it somewhere else.
These gentlemen that work in these cranes are very well paid, and make up to a $250,000 a year.
And it is important that they have the best guys unload these containers because it costs the ship so much money to stay in the port.
At the moment the ship isn't making any money because it is not going anywhere, it has already had its cargo paid for, so it wants itself unloaded, reloaded and leaving.
If you look you up in here you see a variety of colors of containers. The only ones of really any significance are the white ones.
The white containers are temperature controlled containers. They are like refrigeration trucks.
They have a small motor on the back that will be plugged into the ship and they can move goods that need to be […] climate controlled.
If you are bringing in, say, vegetables, salads, meat or fish,
it needs to be in one of these containers and it will be in a contained area.
Once it is unloaded off the ship it is put onto a truck

THE PATH OF WILDNESS
The Path of Wildness is easy to find
The course of a stream
Leaves blown in the wind
A beast's track through the brush
And the direction of our first inclination
The Path of Wildness is an answer and response to a prescribed way of life which may leave some individuals with a sense that their living is little more than a series of pre-determined, step-like episodes between birth and death. The stages of living between these events: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, parenthood and senior are themselves natural and in accord with the needs of the species and most individuals. Many find their satisfaction in living this course and to these individuals I have little or nothing to say. Others though long for something more; something innate, genetic and seemingly calling. Adventure and change can give a degree of satisfaction and relief yet even these may seem too tame. To those who feel drawn to something beyond the entertainment and stimulation of senses I offer a walk along The Path of Wildness. Don't bother penciling the event in your schedule, preparing a pack with goodies and supplies or even inviting a friend along, for this experience is along the course of your first inclination and you must surely always go alone.
