Monterey Bay Aquarium video taken in September 2009 with my Canon HF100 camera. This was our first visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California and hopefully not the last. The staff were all very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable......first rate all the way! This video shows only a few highlights of the many fascinating animals that live there. My favorites are here - the kelp forest, amazing jellyfish (which look like ufos or something alien or at least like something out of science fiction), seahorses, sea otters, and the Outer Bay exhibit which also contained the aquarium's new young female Great White shark. The Monterey Bay Aquarium should not be missed if you are in the area!
UPDATE: This Great White Shark has been released back to the ocean.
Click on "HD". You may have to hit pause and let it load through once before watching in Hi-Def, depending on how slow YouTube is acting at the time. Watching the videos "in channel" in HD seems to give good results, sometimes. Give it a try. Helps a bit if your computer is fast. Not bad in non-HD also.

Spot sharks, rays and other fishes as they cruise through our rocky reef.
Sevengill sharks, leopard sharks, spiny dogfish and the elusive Pacific angel shark all dwell in our Monterey Bay Habitats exhibit—like they do just beyond our walls in the cold waters of the bay. Designed with sharks in mind, this exhibit's 90-foot-long hourglass shape gives our big sharks plenty of room to glide and turn.
Watch carefully and you might see big skates and bat rays pass by the window, just like their shark kin. Plus, keep your eyes peeled for sturgeon coasting through the water, rockfish and giant sea bass relaxing by the reef, and flatfish nestling on the sandy seafloor.

During our visit to Grandma's house in California, we went on a little field trip with our cousins Sophia and Lily.
Our first stop was the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, CA.
The Monterey Bay Aquarium (MBA) was founded in 1984 and is located on the site of a former sardine cannery on Cannery Row of the Pacific Ocean shoreline in Monterey, California, United States. It has an annual attendance of 1.8 million visitors. It holds thousands of plants and animals, representing more than 600 species on display. The aquarium benefits from a high circulation of fresh ocean water which is obtained through pipes which pump it in continuously from Monterey Bay.
Our second stop was at Wild Things in Salinas, CA.
Wild Things is a sanctuary for rescued animals as well as a training facility for animals used in movies and television. We went on a tour that showed us all the different animals that live at their zoo. At the end of the tour, we got to feed carrots to an elephant!

El Monterey Bay Aquarium (www.montereybayaquarium.org) es un Acuario en California, a mar abierto, por lo que las escenas que se ven son del fondo del mar real, no de un estanque artificial cerrado mantenido por el hombre. La criatura que interactua con el niño, a mi me parece un ser inteligente, algo desconocido para la ciencia y es lo mas parecido a lo que se conoce en las leyendas como una sirena. Today we had several rare close-encounters with humpback whales feasting on anchovies off the coast of Moss Beach in Monterey Bay. They came right up between a bunch of kayakers and SUPs. At one point, they were within 2 feet of me! We even got the spray of their anchovy breath on us (which was equal parts nasty and amazing). :-) We never chased them - they came to us and were quite aware of their size and where we were.

Our Monterey Bay cam offers a peek from the Aquarium's ocean-view decks.
From this vantage point, you can identify a number of the birds and sea mammals that find refuge here. Look for black cormorants perched on a rock, perhaps stretching their wings to dry. Watch the water's surface; you might see a harbor seal poke its head out of the water, or a sea otter wrapped in kelp.
Monterey Bay is part of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, a federally protected marine area offshore of California's central coast. This safe haven is home to a rich variety of fishes, plants, marine mammals and birds.

Monterey Bay is a bay of the Pacific Ocean, along the central coast of California. The bay is south of San Francisco and San Jose, between the cities of Santa Cruz and Monterey.
The Monterey Bay Area, or sometimes just Bay Area, are local colloquialisms sometimes used to describe the whole of the coastal communities of Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties. The Monterey Bay Area is also part of the larger area known colloquially as the Central Coast.
The first European to discover Monterey Bay was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on November 16, 1542 while sailing northward along the coast on a Spanish naval expedition. He originally named the bay Bahía de los Pinos, probably because of the forest of pine trees first encountered while rounding the peninsula at the southern end of the bay.
On December 10, 1595, Sebastián Rodríguez Cermeño crossed the bay and bestowed the name Bahía de San Pedro in honor of Saint Peter Martyr.
The present name for the bay was documented in 1602 by Sebastián Vizcaíno, who had been tasked by the Spanish government to complete a detailed chart of the coast. He anchored in what is now the Monterey Harbor on December 16, and named it Puerto de Monterey, in honor of the Conde de Monterrey, then viceroy of New Spain. Monterrey is an alternate spelling of Monterrei, a municipality in the Galicia region of Spain from which the viceroy and his father (the Fourth Count of Monterrei) were from.

Get an up-close look at the delicate sea nettles in our Open Sea exhibit. Watch as their long tentacles and lacey mouth-arms move smoothly through the water. But don't let these unassuming invertebrates fool you—their graceful trailing parts are covered in stinging cells used for hunting. When their tentacles touch tiny drifting prey, the stinging cells paralyze it and stick tight. The prey is moved to the mouth-arms and then to the mouth, where it's digested.

During our visit to Grandma's house in California, we went on a little field trip with our cousins Sophia and Lily. Our first stop was the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, CA. Whales Surprise Kayakers in Monterey Bay
Today we had several rare close-encounters with humpback whales feasting on anchovies off the coast of Moss Beach in Monterey Bay. They came right up between a bunch of kayakers and SUPs. At one point, they were within 2 feet of me! We even got the spray of their anchovy breath on us (which was equal parts nasty and amazing). :-) We never chased them - they came to us and were quite aware of their size and where we were. Our Monterey Bay cam offers a peek from the Aquarium's ocean-view decks. From this vantage point, you can identify a number of the birds and sea mammals that find refuge here. Look for black cormorants perched on a rock, perhaps stretching their wings to dry. Watch the water's surface; you might see a harbor seal poke its head out of the water, or a sea otter wrapped in kelp. Monterey Bay is part of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, a federally protected marine area offshore of California's central coast. But don't let these unassuming invertebrates fool you—their graceful trailing parts are covered in stinging cells used for hunting. When their tentacles touch tiny drifting prey, the stinging cells paralyze it and stick tight. The prey is moved to the mouth-arms and then to the mouth, where it's digested. -

Watch a baby sea otter being born! (Spoiler alert: the miracle of life is graphic!)
A wild otter mom, seeking shelter from stormy seas, gave birth to her pup in our Great Tide Pool with guests and staff looking on. It was an amazing moment. Not that long ago, southern sea otters were hunted to near extinction but now, thanks to legislative protection and a change of heart toward these furriest of sea creatures, the otter population in Monterey Bay has rebounded. Our sea otter researchers have been watching wild otters for years and have never seen a birth close up like this. We’re amazed and awed to have had a chance to witness this Monterey Bay conservation success story first hand in our own backyard. Welcome to the world, little otter! -

At the time I shot this video, the Monterey Bay Aquarium had the only Great White shark in captivity. It was accidentally caught in commercial fishing gear and they nursed it back to health. Monterey Bay Aquarium video taken in September 2009 with my Canon HF100 camera. This was our first visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California and hopefully not the last. The staff were all very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable......first rate all the way! This video shows only a few highlights of the many fascinating animals that live there. My favorites are here - the kelp forest, amazing jellyfish (which look like ufos or something alien or at least like something out of science fiction), seahorses, sea otters, and the Outer Bay exhibit which also contained the aquarium's new young female Great White shark. The Monterey Bay Aquarium should not be missed if you are in the area!
UPDATE: This Great White Shark has been released back to the ocean.
Click on "HD". You may have to hit pause and let it load through once before watching in Hi-Def, depending on how slow YouTube is acting at the time. Watching the videos "in channel" in HD seems to give good results, sometimes. Give it a try. Helps a bit if your computer is fast. Not bad in non-HD also.

Today we had several rare close-encounters with humpback whales feasting on anchovies off the coast of Moss Beach in Monterey Bay. They came right up between a bunch of kayakers and SUPs. At one point, they were within 2 feet of me! We even got the spray of their anchovy breath on us (which was equal parts nasty and amazing). :-) We never chased them - they came to us and were quite aware of their size and where we were.

It was an amazing moment. Not that long ago, southern sea otters were hunted to near extinction but now, thanks to legislative protection and a change of heart toward these furriest of sea creatures, the otter population in Monterey Bay has rebounded.
Our sea otter researchers have been watching wild otters for years and have never seen a birth close up like this. We’re amazed and awed to have had a chance to witness this Monterey Bay conservation success story first hand in our own backyard. Welcome to the world, little otter!

In this video, you'll see everything from sea otters to sting rays and from sardines to sharks. At the time I shot this video, the Monterey Bay Aquarium had the only Great White shark in captivity. It was accidentally caught in commercial fishing gear and they nursed it back to health. It has since been released into the wild, and it is doing well. The aquarium has saved five different sharks in the past five years.

From the moment you step inside the former sardine cannery, you'll be hypnotized by pulsating jellyfish, swaying kelp beds and colorful ocean fish.
Just five minutes in this place and you'll discover why it's the nation's No. 1 aquarium.
More than 623 marine species are on display, so allow at least 3 hours to fully enjoy the aquarium's galleries, touch pools and exhibits. You can easily spend the entire day here.
For the best photos, turn off your flash and set ISO to 400.
The outer deck opens up to Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, home to the nation's largest kelp forest and one of the world's most diverse marine ecosystems.
The sanctuary runs 276 miles from Cambria to Marin.
Throngs of visitors flood the aquarium daily, so if you want to avoid the crowds, visit during fall and winter, or between 2 and 6 p.m. Tuesdays-Thursdays in the peak summer season.

Located two hours south of San Francisco and 5 1/2 hours north of LA, Monterey retains the charm of a small town while boasting some of the best dining, shops and attractions on the Central Coast.
Cannery Row, immortalized in the 1945 John Steinbeck novel, is one of Monterey's top attractions. Today, Cannery Row's sardine factories are now home to quirky shops, chain restaurants and posh hotels. Monterey Bay Aquarium, housed in historic Hovden Cannery, is a must-see attraction. A downstairs exhibit displays Steinbeck memorabilia and vintage sardine machinery.
For a fun day out with the kids, check out Old Fisherman's Wharf, originally built in 1846. It's a typical bustling pier, with million-dollar Monterey boats, fresh seafood, candy shops and amusements.
We stopped for lunch at Old Fisherman's Grotto, known for its fresh cracked crab and the best clam chowder in Monterey. I have to say, it lived up to its reputation.
For a great locals-style breakfast, pop in to Old Monterey Cafe on Alvarado Street.
Next, rent a surrey from Bay Bikes and explore Monterey State Historic Park, just a few blocks up the street. You'll find some of the best preserved adobes in California here, including Custom House, built by Mexico in 1827 for sea trading, and California's First Theatre, built in 1846 as entertainment for local sailors. California's first state constitution was drafted at Colton Hall in 1849.
When booking Monterey hotels, plan well in advance. The town books up quickly in September during the Monterey Jazz Festival and in June during the Monterey Blues Festival.

My friends and I are here for a girls getaway, and we're packing in as many sights as possible in the 48 hours we're here. At Morro Strand State Beach, you can fly a kite, go horseback riding, or look for sand dollars along the shore.
But we're here for the kayaking, and we can't wait to start exploring. The sea lions are adorable, but we're hoping to spot some resident sea otters, who can be found wrapping themselves in the kelp near Morro Rock.
After all that exercise, we're famished, and the seafood here is as fresh as it gets. Morro Bay Fish Company is bringing in their daily catch of black cod and buckets of live Dungeness Crab.
After slurping down some oysters at Dockside Too, we head over to Giovanni's for some hot clam chowder. We spend the rest of the afternoon shopping along the Embarcadero, then hit Stax Wine Bar for a tasting of local wines.
If you don't mind a short drive, head to dinner in Cayucos, a coastal beach town that dates back to the 1800s. Although it's famous for the Brown Butter Cookie Company, our favorite discovery is Ruddell's Smokehouse, where you can dig in to Jim's fresh smoked albacore tuna, smoked oysters and some of the best fish tacos and fish sandwiches you'll ever eat.

California Travel Expert Veronica Hill (http://www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com) shares her guide to Morro Bay and Cayucos in this episode of "California Travel Tips."
My friends and I are here for a girls getaway, and we're packing in as many sights as possible in the 48 hours we're here. At Morro Strand State Beach, you can fly a kite, go horseback riding, or look for sand dollars along the shore.
But we're here for the kayaking, and we can't wait to start exploring. The sea lions are adorable, but we're hoping to spot some resident sea otters, who can be found wrapping themselves in the kelp near Morro Rock.
After all that exercise, we're famished, and the seafood here is as fresh as it gets. Morro Bay Fish Company is bringing in their daily catch of black cod and buckets of live Dungeness Crab.
After slurping down some oysters at Dockside Too, we head over to Giovanni's for some hot clam chowder. We spend the rest of the afternoon shopping along the Embarcadero, then hit Stax Wine Bar for a tasting of local wines.
If you don't mind a short drive, head to dinner in Cayucos, a coastal beach town that dates back to the 1800s. Although it's famous for the Brown Butter Cookie Company, our favorite discovery is Ruddell's Smokehouse, where you can dig in to Jim's fresh smoked albacore tuna, smoked oysters and some of the best fish tacos and fish sandwiches you'll ever eat.

An water leak in the attic of a Toulouse home has led to the discovery of a 400-year-old masterpiece that may have been painted by Italian master Caravaggio, The Associated Press reported Tuesday. French expert Eric Turquin, who retrieved the painting two years ago, said it is in exceptional state of conservation.
