Atrium (architecture)
In architecture, an atrium (plural: atria or atriums) is a large open space located within a building. Atria were a common feature in Ancient Roman dwellings, providing light and ventilation to the interior. Modern atria, as developed in the late 19th and 20th centuries, are often several stories high and having a glazed roof and/or large windows, and often located immediately beyond the main entrance doors (in the lobby).
Atria are a popular design feature because they give their buildings a "feeling of space and light". The atrium has become a key feature of many buildings in recent years. Atria are popular with building users, building designers and building developers. Users like atria because they create a dynamic and stimulating interior that provides shelter from the external environment while maintaining a visual link with that environment. Designers enjoy the opportunity to create new types of spaces in buildings, and developers see atria as prestigious amenities that can increase commercial value and appeal.Fire control is an important aspect of contemporary atrium design due to criticism that poorly designed atria could allow fire to spread to a building's upper stories more quickly.

Atrium (heart)
The atrium (plural: atria) is one of the two blood collection chambers of the heart. It was previously called the auricle, but that name has now been in use as being synonymous with the right or left atrial appendage. The atrium is a chamber in which blood enters the heart, as opposed to the ventricle, where it is pushed out of the organ. It has a thin-walled structure that allows blood to return to the heart. There is at least one atrium in animals with a closed circulatory system.
The atrium receives blood as it returns to the heart to complete a circulating cycle, whereas the ventricle pumps blood out of the heart to start a new cycle.
Structure
Humans have a four-chambered heart consisting of the right atrium, left atrium, right ventricle, and left ventricle. The atria, are the two upper chambers. The right atrium receives and holds deoxygenated blood from the superior vena cava, inferior vena cava, anterior cardiac veins and smallest cardiac veins and the coronary sinus, which it then sends down to the right ventricle (through the tricuspid valve) which in turn sends it to the pulmonary artery for pulmonary circulation. The left atrium receives the oxygenated blood from the left and right pulmonary veins, which it pumps to the left ventricle (through the mitral valve) for pumping out through the aorta for systemic circulation.

The atria of the heart, which are singularly known as an atrium, are a pair of blood collecting chambers that comprise two of the four chambers of the heart. The main function of the atria is to facilitate circulation by rhythmically contracting and relaxing their walls, pushing the blood that is returned to them via the major venous vessels, into the ventricles.
The atria are divided into the left atrium and the right atrium, which correspond to the left and right sides of the heart. They are situated just above the ventricles of the heart, and are built and held up by rigid endocardial muscle fibers that completely encompass the blood as it flows through them.
The left atrium is responsible for collecting the outflow of oxygenated blood that runs back to the heart from the pulmonary veins. It passes this volume of blood on to the left ventricle as the atrium contracts and the mitral valve -otherwise known as the bicuspid valve- opens.

Patients with an atrial septal defect (ASD) have a hole in the wall of the heart that separates the top two chambers. This hole allows blood to transition from the left atrium to the right atrium ultimately causing enlargement of the right heart chambers. This can cause a decrease in heart function.
Atrial septal defects can be detected during physical examinations or, for those experiencing symptoms such as breathlessness, fatigue, or abnormal rhythms, through cardiac testing such as electrocardiograms or chest x-rays.
Management and treatment of atrial septal defects is determined based on the size and location of the hole. If the hole is small, typically observation is recommended. For medium or large holes, closure by means of a catheter or surgical intervention is recommended. Following treatment, patients most often see improvements in their overall symptoms.

The atria of the heart, which are singularly known as an atrium, are a pair of blood collecting chambers that comprise two of the four chambers of the heart. The main function of the atria is to facilitate circulation by rhythmically contracting and relaxing their walls, pushing the blood that is returned to them via the major venous vessels, into the ventricles.
The atria are divided into the left atrium and the right atrium, which correspond to the left and right sides of the heart. They are situated just above the ventricles of the heart, and are built and held up by rigid endocardial muscle fibers that completely encompass the blood as it flows through them.
The left atrium is responsible for collecting the outflow of oxygenated blood that runs back to the heart from the pulmonary veins. It passes this volume of blood on to the left ventricle as the atrium contracts and the mitral valve -otherwise known as the bicuspid valve- opens.

The right atrium receives deoxygenated venous flow from the superior vena cava, the inferior vena cava, the coronary sinus and the anterior and smallest cardiac veins. It passes the blood to the right ventricle of the heart through the tricuspid valve, which has three cusps or leaflets, and is also known as the right atrioventricular valve.
The main anatomical features of the right atrium include the sinus venarum, which surrounds the openings of the superior and inferior vena cavae as well as the coronary sinus, which in turn are also major structures. The atrial walls are made up of pectinate muscles which form a pouch known as the right auricle. The crista terminalis separates the cardiac and smooth muscle layers of the atrial walls, while the interatrial septum divides the atria.

Patients with an atrial septal defect (ASD) have a hole in the wall of the heart that separates the top two chambers. This hole allows blood to transition from the left atrium to the right atrium ultimately causing enlargement of the right heart chambers. This can cause a decrease in heart function.
Atrial septal defects can be detected during physical examinations or, for those experiencing symptoms such as breathlessness, fatigue, or abnormal rhythms, through cardiac testing such as electrocardiograms or chest x-rays.
Management and treatment of atrial septal defects is determined based on the size and location of the hole. If the hole is small, typically observation is recommended. For medium or large holes, closure by means of a catheter or surgical intervention is recommended. Following treatment, patients most often see improvements in their overall symptoms.
