What is ASMR?
ASMR stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Responce and it is a term that categorises the pleasant (non-sexual) feeling of 'goosebumps' or 'chills' that some can feel when they are being triggered by an external stimuli such as whispering, personal attention or certain sounds.

During a House Rules Committee hearing on a bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act, Alcee Hastings, the Florida Democrat grew heated in an argument with Texas Republican Michael Burgess over states that chose not to create their own insurance exchanges — the subject of a pending Supreme Court case.
“Had governors worked with the administration, we might not be in this position,” Hastings said. “I don’t know about in your state, which I think is a crazy state to begin with — and I mean that just as I said it.”
Before approving a closed rule for the repeal bill, scheduled to be considered on the House floor Tuesday, Burgess asked for an apology. “You will wait until hell freezes over”, Hastings responded.

Stone profile of Gen. Stanley McChrystal led to the resignation of the
commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, died today in a car crash in Los
Angeles, according to the magazine and a website for which he worked.
Officials with the Los Angeles County coroner's office could not
immediately confirm if the 33-year-old Hastings was the person who died around
4:25 a.m. when a car smashed into a tree and caught fire on Highland Avenue
near Melrose Avenue in the Hancock Park area.
The circumstances of the crash were under investigation, but a cameraman
at the scene said the vehicle, a Mercedes, was being driven at a high rate of
speed when the crash occurred. The car's engine ended up 200 feet away from the
collision site, he said.
Lt. Fred Corral of the coroner's office said the body was burned beyond
recognition, and the identity of the victim would not be known until at least
Wednesday.
The Hancock Park crash was the only fatal car wreck in the city today,
according to police.
However, Ben Smith, editor in chief of BuzzFeed.com, issued a statement
announcing Hastings' death in a car accident in Los Angeles, saying the
journalist's BuzzFeed colleagues were ``shocked and devastated by the news that
Michael Hastings in gone.''
``Michael was a great, fearless journalist with an incredible instinct
for the story, and a gift for finding ways to make his readers care about
anything he covered from wars to politicians,'' Smith said. ``He wrote stories
that would otherwise have gone unwritten, and without him there are great
stories that will go untold. Michael was also a wonderful, generous colleague
and a joy to work with. Our thoughts are with Elise (his wife) and the rest of
his family and we are going to miss him.''
Hastings was perhaps most famous for his candid 2010 Rolling Stone
interview with McChrystal, who was then commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan
and was critical of the White House's oversight of the military. His comments
resulted in the general being summoned to Washington, D.C., and his eventual
resignation.
Hastings was still a contributing editor at Rolling Stone.
``Great reporters exude a certain kind of electricity, the sense that
there are stories burning inside them, and that there's no higher calling or
greater way to live life than to be always relentlessly trying to find and tell
those stories,'' Rolling Stone managing editor Will Dana said in a story about
Hastings' death posted on the magazine's website.
``I'm sad that he won't be stopping by my office for any more short
visits which would stretch for two or three completely engrossing hours,'' Dana
said. ``He will be missed.''
Hastings wrote two books about war, including ``The Operators'' about

Hastings is a town and borough in the county of East Sussex on the south coast of England. The town is located 24 mi (39 km) east of the county town of Lewes and 53 mi (85 km) south east of London, and has an estimated population of 86,900.
In historical terms, Hastings can claim fame through its connection with the Norman conquest of England; and also because it became one of the medieval Cinque Ports. Hastings was, for centuries, an important fishing port; although nowadays much reduced, it still has the largest beach-based fishing fleet in England. The town became a watering place in the 1760s, and then, with the coming of the railway, a seaside resort.
The attraction of Hastings as a tourist destination continues; although the number of hotels has decreased, it caters for wider tastes, being home to internationally-based cultural and sporting events, such as chess and running. It has set out to become "a modern European town" and seeks to attract commercial business in the many industrial sites round the borough.

Written by City News Service - Journalist Michael Hastings, whose blunt Rolling Stone profile of Gen. Stanley McChrystal led to the resignation of the commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, died today in a car crash in Los Angeles, according to the magazine and a website for which he worked. Officials with the Los Angeles County coroner's office could not immediately confirm if the 33-year-old Hastings was the person who died around 4:25 a.m. when a car smashed into a tree and caught fire on Highland Avenue near Melrose Avenue in the Hancock Park area. The circumstances of the crash were under investigation, but a cameraman at the scene said the vehicle, a Mercedes, was being driven at a high rate of speed when the crash occurred. They were studying the middle ages this term and the call went out to parents to come in and give a little talk to the class, and I thought this would be more entertaining than some middle-aged git rambling on about history to them. ASMR stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Responce and it is a term that categorises the pleasant (non-sexual) feeling of 'goosebumps' or 'chills' that some can feel when they are being triggered by an external stimuli such as whispering, personal attention or certain sounds.

Stone profile of Gen. Stanley McChrystal led to the resignation of the
commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, died today in a car crash in Los
Angeles, according to the magazine and a website for which he worked.
Officials with the Los Angeles County coroner's office could not
immediately confirm if the 33-year-old Hastings was the person who died around
4:25 a.m. when a car smashed into a tree and caught fire on Highland Avenue
near Melrose Avenue in the Hancock Park area.
The circumstances of the crash were under investigation, but a cameraman
at the scene said the vehicle, a Mercedes, was being driven at a high rate of
speed when the crash occurred. The car's engine ended up 200 feet away from the
collision site, he said.
Lt. Fred Corral of the coroner's office said the body was burned beyond
recognition, and the identity of the victim would not be known until at least
Wednesday.
The Hancock Park crash was the only fatal car wreck in the city today,
according to police.
However, Ben Smith, editor in chief of BuzzFeed.com, issued a statement
announcing Hastings' death in a car accident in Los Angeles, saying the
journalist's BuzzFeed colleagues were ``shocked and devastated by the news that
Michael Hastings in gone.''
``Michael was a great, fearless journalist with an incredible instinct
for the story, and a gift for finding ways to make his readers care about
anything he covered from wars to politicians,'' Smith said. ``He wrote stories
that would otherwise have gone unwritten, and without him there are great
stories that will go untold. Michael was also a wonderful, generous colleague
and a joy to work with. Our thoughts are with Elise (his wife) and the rest of
his family and we are going to miss him.''
Hastings was perhaps most famous for his candid 2010 Rolling Stone
interview with McChrystal, who was then commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan
and was critical of the White House's oversight of the military. His comments
resulted in the general being summoned to Washington, D.C., and his eventual
resignation.
Hastings was still a contributing editor at Rolling Stone.
``Great reporters exude a certain kind of electricity, the sense that
there are stories burning inside them, and that there's no higher calling or
greater way to live life than to be always relentlessly trying to find and tell
those stories,'' Rolling Stone managing editor Will Dana said in a story about
Hastings' death posted on the magazine's website.
``I'm sad that he won't be stopping by my office for any more short
visits which would stretch for two or three completely engrossing hours,'' Dana
said. ``He will be missed.''
Hastings wrote two books about war, including ``The Operators'' about

Here's a quick film I made for one of my kid's class (8 - 10 year olds). They were studying the middle ages this term and the call went out to parents to come in and give a little talk to the class, and I thought this would be more entertaining than some middle-aged git rambling on about history to them.
EDIT: There have been some notable complaints about some of my omissions in this video, so let me just add the following: 1) Personally, I'm more interested in the social consequences of history rather than the nuts-and-bolts details of how battles were fought, hence this isn;t the most in-depth summary of how the fight was won, sorry. 2) as several viewers have pointed out, Harold Godwinson had just forced-marched his men south after successfully seeing off the 3rd claimant to the English throne, Norse King Harold Hardrada at the Battle of Stamford Bridge, and there is a very real possibility fresher troops might have carried the day. 3) Middle English is more the language of Chaucer than Shakespeare.
All things being equal, it is still extremely gratifying to read all of the positive feedback this video has garnered from young people bored to tears by dry homework texts rabbiting on about forced marches and the importance of the stirrup in revolutionising medieval warfare. For those seeking a more in-depth summation of the Battle, I heartily recommend checking out Simon Schama's excellent History of Britain series. Maybe not if you're 9, though.

Here is part one (of two) of an excellent, professionally produced, documentary film about the Hastings to Ashford railway sometimes called the "Marshlink" made by BCL films of Hastings in 1987.
Here is an extract from the notes on the original video cassette box:
This is a detailed film of the Hastings to Ashford line, including the Dungeness branch, and a look at what remains of the Rye Harbour branch. From Hastings the line runs alongside the Fairlight Hills through the Sussex Weald. On through the halts of Three Oaks and Doleham it continues along the valley of the River Brede, exploring the long closed halt at Snailham before reaching Winchelsea and crossing the River Tillingham into Rye. At Rye the film makes a detour to explore the Rye Harbour branch. Leaving Rye across the River Rother the scenery changes as the line crosses the edge of Romney Marsh. Arriving at Appledore the film again makes a detour, this time onto the Dungeness branch, and the nuclear flask train at the power station. After Appledore the line crosses the Royal Military Canal near Warehorne before arriving in Ham Street. From Ham Street the line runs up through a dip in the hills to arrive in Ashford past the old railway works at Chart Leacon.
Part two (separate upload) shews mainly a round trip over the line on board Hastings DEMU No. 203 001 (formerly No. 1011): it also shews some of the many variations of DEMU formation in use on the "Marshlink" in the late 1980s.
This film is copyright to BCL films and shewn here without permission BUT, as far as I can tell, BCL films no longer exists (cannot be found on the internet) and, as far as I know, this footage is not available to be purchased or seen either via the internet or locally. Here is part one (of two) of an excellent, professionally produced, documentary film about the Hastings to Ashford railway sometimes called the "Marshlink" made by BCL films of Hastings in 1987.
Here is an extract from the notes on the original video cassette box:
This is a detailed film of the Hastings to Ashford line, including the Dungeness branch, and a look at what remains of the Rye Harbour branch. From Hastings the line runs alongside the Fairlight Hills through the Sussex Weald. On through the halts of Three Oaks and Doleham it continues along the valley of the River Brede, exploring the long closed halt at Snailham before reaching Winchelsea and crossing the River Tillingham into Rye. At Rye the film makes a detour to explore the Rye Harbour branch. Leaving Rye across the River Rother the scenery changes as the line crosses the edge of Romney Marsh. Arriving at Appledore the film again makes a detour, this time onto the Dungeness branch, and the nuclear flask train at the power station. After Appledore the line crosses the Royal Military Canal near Warehorne before arriving in Ham Street. From Ham Street the line runs up through a dip in the hills to arrive in Ashford past the old railway works at Chart Leacon.
Part two (separate upload) shews mainly a round trip over the line on board Hastings DEMU No. 203 001 (formerly No. 1011): it also shews some of the many variations of DEMU formation in use on the "Marshlink" in the late 1980s.
This film is copyright to BCL films and shewn here without permission BUT, as far as I can tell, BCL films no longer exists (cannot be found on the internet) and, as far as I know, this footage is not available to be purchased or seen either via the internet or locally.
