Starting with a character layout, exposure sheet, storyboard and recorded dialogue, John walks you through the steps you’d go through if you worked in an animation studio.
In Animating Dialogue, Speaking Through The Body, John Pomeroy discusses how to begin animating dialogue by using the body to express the emotional content of the scene. He demonstrates and discusses the importance of poses to the dialogue before focusing on mouth movement. In this session John starts with an analysis of the scene and finishes with a pose test using the body to express the dialogue. John Pomeroy
John Pomeroy (born 1951 in Los Angeles, California) is an American animator who has worked for several major studios, including The Walt Disney Company and Sullivan Bluth Studios. He has also worked as producer and screenwriter on several animated feature films.
Career
John Pomeroy started work at The Walt Disney Company in 1973 as a background artist, and became a full animator in 1974 to work on Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too. While working at Disney, he met fellow animators Don Bluth and Gary Goldman, and began working with them on an independent short film project, Banjo the Woodpile Cat.
In 1979 he, Bluth, Goldman and several other Disney animators left the studio to form the independent studio Don Bluth Productions (later to become Bluth Group), which produced the film The Secret of NIMH and the animation for laserdisc video games Dragon's Lair and Space Ace. The independent studio encountered financial difficulties and declared bankruptcy in 1984, but reformed soon after as Sullivan Bluth Studios and opened a major animation facility in Dublin, Ireland.

John Pomeroy , Director of the Centre for Hydrology at the University of Saskatchewan presents his findings on the Cold Regions Hydrological Modelling platform (CRHM). It is an object-oriented, modular and flexible platform for assembling hydrological models, based on over fifty years of hydrology research at the University of Saskatchewan, and Environment Canada.
Components include a full suite of snow and frozen ground processes, and in the mountains it can be altered to deal with extreme topography.
It was largely developed for mountain applications from field experiments at Marmot Creek Research Basin, Kananaskis. The modelling of the rain and snow includes: calculations of radiation, blowing snow around and melting it, infiltrating water into frozen and unfrozen soils, and running water down hill slopes. It includes an uncalibrated streamflow test, and measured rainfall rates at Marmot Creek. During the flood in Alberta in 2013, rainfall was measured and peak rainfall was determined to have occurred June 20th, with a peak rainfall rate of 13 mm per hour.
It was concluded that the flood of June 2013 in the Canadian Rockies was primarily achieved from 250 mm of rainfall in the Front Ranges. Rain on snow melt added contributions of 100 mm. Additional modelling was done to determine how the rainfall amount would have changed if it had occurred at different parts of the summer in 2013, and at different years.

The human rights movement is reeling and the worst is yet to come. Populists have come to power in key countries promoting an agenda which is avowedly nationalistic, xenophobic and retrograde. The space for civil society has been closed down in many countries. The International Criminal Court is under concerted attack as states withdraw and ‘unsign’. Regional and UN institutions are under increasing pressure. This lecture suggests what can be done in response to this onslaught of negative developments. ‘Business as usual’ is not one of the options. Intensive self-reflection, innovative thinking and creative strategizing will be required.
This lecture marks International Human Rights day, which on the 10th December each year commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 by the United Nations General Assembly.
Philip Alston is John Norton Pomeroy Professor of Law at New York University School of Law. His teaching focuses primarily on international law, human rights law, and international criminal law. He co-chairs the NYU Center for Human Rights and Global Justice.
He has previously been Professor of Law and Foundation Director of the Center for International and Public Law at the Australian National University and Professor of International Law at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence where he was also Head of Department and Co-Director of the Academy of European Law.
Alston was appointed in 2014 as the UN Human Rights Council’s Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights. He was previously UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary, or arbitrary executions from 2004 to 2010 and undertook fact-finding missions to: Sri Lanka, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Philippines, Israel, Lebanon, Albania, Kenya, Brazil, Central African Republic, Afghanistan, the United States, Albania, and Ecuador. He was a member of the Group of Experts on Darfur appointed in 2007 by the UN Human Rights Council, and was special adviser to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on the Millennium Development Goals. He chaired the UN Committee on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights for eight years until 1998, and at the 1993 World Conference on Human Rights he was elected to chair the first meeting of the Presidents and Chairs of all of the international human rights courts and committees (including the European and American Human Rights Courts and the African Commission). He was UNICEF's legal adviser throughout the period of the drafting of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and directed a major project funded by the European Commission, which resulted in the publication of a Human Rights Agenda for the European Union for the Year 2000 and a volume of essays on that theme. In 2010-11 he was a member of the Independent International Commission investigating human rights violations in Kyrgzstan.

Robert Black (born 21 April 1947) is a Scottish serial killer convicted of the kidnapping and murder of four girls between the ages of 5 and 11, between 1981 and 1986 in the United Kingdom. He was convicted of sexually assaulting one of the girls, and of raping the other three. Black was also convicted of the kidnapping of a fifth girl, and the attempted kidnapping of a sixth.
Black is also suspected of unsolved child murders in the United Kingdom, dating back to 1969 and others in the 1970s, throughout Europe.
At this time, Black moved back to Kinlochleven, where he was raised. He took a room with a couple who had a seven-year-old daughter. As before, Black molested the girl. This time, when the sexual abuse was discovered, police were notified. Black was sentenced to a year of borstal training at Polmont.
On his release, Black left Scotland and moved to London. In London, Black found work as a swimming pool attendant, and would sometimes go underneath the pool, remove the lights and watch young girls as they swam. Soon, a young girl reported that Black had touched her, and although no official charges were brought, Black lost his job.[6]
While Black lived in London he spent a lot of time in pubs playing darts. He became a reasonably good player, and a well-known face on the amateur darts circuit. Darts world champion Eric Bristow knew Black vaguely during this time, remembering him as a "loner" who never seemed to have a girlfriend. In 1976, Black began working as a van driver. It was while working as a driver that he developed a thorough knowledge of some of the United Kingdom's roads, particularly its minor roads.
Black has been considered as a suspect by police in the unsolved murder or disappearance of other girls, including the disappearance of April Fabb in April 1969, and the disappearance of Genette Tate in August 1978. He has been questioned about these cases, but prosecutors have said that there is insufficient evidence to charge Black.
Black was arrested on 14 July 1990, near Stow, Scotland. He was seen snatching a six-year-old girl off the street, and bundling her into his van. An alert member of the public called the police, who chased after the van and subsequently apprehended Black, when the van was recognised as he doubled back.
The policeman discovered that the child in the back of the van, tied up, gagged with tape and stuffed head-first into a sleeping bag was his daughter. She had been sexually assaulted. A search of Black's home revealed a large collection of child pornography.[13]
The following month, Black was convicted of abduction and was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Police suspected Black of the murders of Susan Maxwell, Caroline Hogg and Sarah Harper. They checked his petrol receipts and eventually charged Black with all three murders, in addition to the attempted kidnapping of a 15-year-old girl who had escaped from a man who had tried to drag her into a van in 1988.
On 13 April 1994, Black stood trial at Newcastle upon Tyne Moot Hall, and denied the charges. Having sifted through many thousands of petrol-station receipts, the prosecution was able to place him at all the scenes and show the similarities between the three killings, and the kidnap of the six-year-old girl who had been rescued. Juries are not usually allowed to know of a defendant's current or past convictions, but in this case the judge allowed it.
On 19 May, the jury found Black guilty on all counts, and he was sentenced to life imprisonment and told that he should serve at least 35 years. This would keep him behind bars until at least 2029, when he would be 82.
On 16 December 2009, Black was charged with the murder of Jennifer Cardy. He was found guilty on 27 October 2011 and was given a further life sentence by Armagh Crown Court. On 8 December 2011, Black was told that he would be at least 89 years old before he would be considered for release.
Black was attacked in his Wakefield prison cell in July 1995 after being ambushed by two inmates. Convicted robber Andrew Wilson, 22, threw boiling water mixed with sugar over Black in an attempt to ‘rip his skin off’, then battered him with a table leg, while murderer Craig Hendley, 25, stabbed Black in the back and neck with a homemade knife. Hendley later told police "I'll kill the next nonce to come near me." A court subsequently heard that "Black was a particularly notorious prisoner because of the nature of the offences for which he was serving his sentence. It was for this reason he became a target."

Raif Pomeroy - interview 1998
Raif Pomeroy being interviewed for a local cable show back in 1998. Later he went on to form the band "Ballyrag". Sadly, he passed away in July of 2007. Fortunately, we were left with some of these great memories of him. He is greatly missed by all who knew him.
