Steven Paul "Elliott" Smith (August 6, 1969 – October 21, 2003) was an American singer, songwriter, and musician. Smith was born in Omaha, Nebraska, raised primarily in Texas, and lived for much of his life in Portland, Oregon, where he first gained popularity. Smith's primary instrument was the guitar, though he was also proficient with piano, clarinet, bass guitar, drums, and harmonica. Smith had a distinctive vocal style, characterized by his "whispery, spiderweb-thin delivery", and used multi-tracking to create vocal layers, textures, and harmonies.
After playing in the rock band Heatmiser for several years, Smith began his solo career in 1994, with releases on the independent record labels Cavity Search and Kill Rock Stars (KRS). In 1997, he signed a contract with DreamWorks Records, for which he recorded two albums. Smith rose to mainstream prominence when his song "Miss Misery"—included in the soundtrack for the film Good Will Hunting (1997)—was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Original Song category in 1998.
A civil war is a war between organized groups within the same state or country, or, less commonly, between two countries created from a formerly united state. The aim of one side may be to take control of the country or a region, to achieve independence for a region or to change government policies. The term is a calque of the Latin bellum civile which was used to refer to the various civil wars of the Roman Republic in the 1st century BC.
A civil war is a high-intensity conflict, often involving regular armed forces, that is sustained, organized and large-scale. Civil wars may result in large numbers of casualties and the consumption of significant resources. Most modern civil wars involve intervention by outside powers. According to Patrick M. Regan in his book Civil Wars and Foreign Powers (2000) about two thirds of the 138 intrastate conflicts between the end of World War II and 2000 saw international intervention, with the United States intervening in 35 of these conflicts.
The Civil Wars were a critically acclaimed American musical duo composed of Joy Williams and John Paul White. Formed in 2008, The Civil Wars won four Grammy Awards prior to their 2014 breakup.
Both Williams and White had solo careers prior to meeting at a songwriting workshop in Nashville in 2008. Williams had recorded several moderately successful albums and was signed as a songwriter to Warner/Chappell; White had independently released The Long Goodbye—which was originally set to be released through a deal with Capitol Records—and was writing for EMI Music. At the workshop, approximately 25 songwriters were assembled by music publishers to write radio singles for an unnamed band later identified as the country group Gloriana. Williams and White were randomly paired to write together, and quickly discovered an affinity. In a 2012 interview, Williams said that "when he started singing it was like I knew where he was going to go before he went there." In the same interview, White said that when he and Williams "started singing together, there was this weird click; it was like there was a dance going where I knew I could lead her but she could lead me, too." Following the workshop, White and Williams made immediate plans to meet again. They wrote the song "Falling" during their first session, which took place at Williams' house.

Drink up baby, stay up all night With the things you could do You won't but you might The potential you'll be That you'll never see The promises you'll only make Drink up with me now And forget all about The pressure of days Do what I say And I'll make you okay And drive them away The images stuck in your head People you've been before That you don't want around anymore That push and shove and won't bend to your will I'll keep them still Drink up baby, look at the stars I'll kiss you again between the bars Where I'm seeing you there With your hands in the air Waiting to finally be caught Drink up one more time And I'll make you mine Keep you apart, Deep in my heart Separate from the rest, Where I like you the best And keep the things you forgot The people you've been before That you d...

Stuck in love - Logan Lerman and Lily Collins
We recently sat down with Joy and John Paul of The Civil Wars in Kansas City. We didn't know what to expect, but they surprised us with a rendition of Elliott Smith's classic 'Between the Bars'. We hope our cameras captured a fraction of the beauty of the moment.

"A lot of people are kind of depressed. I'm happy some of the time, and some of the time I'm not." - Elliott Smith in 1998, as told to Barney Hoskyns We came across a really lost special tape for this episode of Blank on Blank: Elliott Smith interviewed in 1998 by Barney Hoskyns. It's a little eerie hearing him now more than 10 years after his death, but it's also kind of soothing to hear his signature comfort and discomfort bubbling beneath the surface. It's kind of like his timeless collection of music. Smith died under mysterious circumstances in 2003 at the age of 34. In this animated film Elliott Smith talks about feeling like a freak in high school, how he initially didn't feel confident singing in the style that became his signature voice, what he said when people compared him to...

My favorite interview with Elliott Smith. Recorded on 07-04-00 at the Gothenburg Festival in Sweden
Rare video of Elliott Smith, with members of No. 2, Quasi, & Jr. High. Shot during the 1999 XO tour. A little glimpse of everyone off the stage (& on)..on the bus, at the hotel, etc... Thanks to the friends and fans of Elliott who put this together, and for your willingness to share. (If any of those involved wish that this not be shared, please let me know)

Having a baby in prison is no picnic. Every year thousands of babies are born in American prisons. Many of them are taken away from their mothers at birth or soon after. These powerful, moving, shocking and insightful films follow the dramatic and emotional stories of a group of pregnant inmates at the Indiana Women’s Prison. Featuring births, babies and a lot of tears this film uses powerful personal stories to pose poignant questions about how the criminal justice deals with women and children. Challenging preconceptions they make the viewer see prisoners in a new light as mothers and human beings. Can the bond between mother and child survive the harsh realities of life behind bars? Part 1 of a 2 part documentary

Drink up baby
Stay up all night
With the things you could do
You won't but you might
The potential you'll be
But you'll never see
The promises you'll only make
Drink up with me now
And forget all about
The pressure of days
Do what I say
And I'll make you okay
Drive them away
The images stuck in your head
People you've been before
That you don't want around anymore
That push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still
Drink up baby
Look at the stars
I'll kiss you again
Between the bars
Where I'm seeing you there
With your hands in the air
Waiting to finally be caught
Drink up one more time
And I'll make you mine
Keep you apart
Deep in my heart
Separate from the rest
Where I like you the best
And keep the things you forgot
The people you've been before
That you don't want around anymore
That push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still
