The Iwate Prefecture situated at the eastern side of Japan with a direct leap to the Pacific Ocean is a place blessed with some of the best sea foods in the world. But hey, let's not talk about food. Geography
Located in northern Japan, Iwate Prefecture is the second-largest province among Japan’s 47 prefectures next to Hokkaido. With a total area of 15,275 km2（5,898 mile2）, it is larger than the world’s 160th-largest nation of East Timor（14,919 km2 = 5,760 mile2）. That being the case, Iwate has numerous areas to see such as the ocean, mountains and highlands.
Landmarks
After enjoying World Heritage sites such as Hiraizumi, Iwate Prefecture’s largest city of Morioka which is the starting point for any sightseeing and the beautiful Jodogahama Beach which is said to be a paradise on Earth, you can also head for places such as Hachimantai where you can soak in the bubbling waters of an onsen while sipping on some sake.
Food
If you’re looking for cuisine, Morioka is the ideal place. The 3 greatest noodle dishes of wanko soba, jajamen and Morioka reimen can be found in Morioka City. The seafood to be found off the Sanriku coast is also famous. This area which has cold and warm currents making contact is well-known as an excellent fishing ground with great hauls and as one of the top three fishing areas on the planet. Sea urchin, scallop, salmon and abalone are especially good.
Getting Around
The JR Tohoku Shinkansen (Bullet Train) is convenient to reach Morioka and Ichinoseki from Tokyo. With the stations there as your starting point, renting a car is handy. There are also plenty of long-distance bus lines running among the cities of Iwate.
Accommodations
There are accommodations at Morioka Station where the Shinkansen stops as well as Ichinoseki Station which is the launching point for any sightseeing in Hiraizumi.

Powerful Typhoon Lionrock has left extensive damage in its wake across northern Japan. Rescue workers are still searching for three men missing in Hokkaido where bridges were washed away in a swollen river.
The typhoon made landfall in Iwate Prefecture on the Pacific coast on Tuesday evening, dumping torrential rain as it traveled across the north. Eleven people have been confirmed dead, all in Iwate Prefecture.
Nine of the dead were elderly people found Wednesday morning in a flooded nursing home in the town of Iwaizumi. The victims were all residents. Another elderly victim was found on a river bank. In Kuji City, an elderly woman was found dead in a house flooded by a nearby river.
Iwaizumi town officials said as of Thursday phone services remained disconnected in a large area of the town and they are unable to contact 17 residents.
Iwate Prefectural officials believe about 1,100 residents in three communities are isolated because of roads made impassable by the typhoon.
In the northern-most prefecture of Hokkaido, three men are still missing after reports of vehicles falling into a river where bridges collapsed.

Kuji (久慈市, Kuji-shi) is a city located in Iwate Prefecture, Japan. As of September 2015, the city had an estimated population of 35,141 and a population density of 56.4 persons per km². The total area was `623.50 square kilometres (240.73 sq mi).
Geography
Kuji is located in far north-eastern Iwate Prefecture, bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Kitakami Mountains to the west. The Kuji River, with a length of 27 miles (43 km) flows through the city from its source at Mount Myōjin.

Climate
History
The area of present-day Kuji was part of ancient Mutsu Province, and has been settled since at least the Jomon period. Amber for the area has been found at archaeological sites dating from the Nara period at the site of Heijo-kyo and Fujiwara-kyo. During the Sengoku period, the area was dominated by various samurai clans before coming under the control of the Nambu clan during the Edo period, who ruled Hachinohe Domain under the Tokugawa shogunate. The area was noted for its production of ironsand, essential in the production of Japanese swords. These deposits were exploited commercially from the Meiji period, but were exhausted by the 1960s.

Powerful Typhoon Lionrock has left extensive damage in its wake across northern Japan. Rescue workers are still searching for three men missing in Hokkaido where bridges were washed away in a swollen river. The typhoon made landfall in Iwate Prefecture on the Pacific coast on Tuesday evening, dumping torrential rain as it traveled across the north. Eleven people have been confirmed dead, all in Iwate Prefecture. Nine of the dead were elderly people found Wednesday morning in a flooded nursing home in the town of Iwaizumi. The victims were all residents. Another elderly victim was found on a river bank. In Kuji City, an elderly woman was found dead in a house flooded by a nearby river. Iwaizumi town officials said as of Thursday phone services remained disconnected in a large area of the town and they are unable to contact 17 residents. Iwate Prefectural officials believe about 1,100 residents in three communities are isolated because of roads made impassable by the typhoon. In the northern-most prefecture of Hokkaido, three men are still missing after reports of vehicles falling into a river where bridges collapsed.

Geography
Located in northern Japan, Iwate Prefecture is the second-largest province among Japan’s 47 prefectures next to Hokkaido. With a total area of 15,275 km2（5,898 mile2）, it is larger than the world’s 160th-largest nation of East Timor（14,919 km2 = 5,760 mile2）. That being the case, Iwate has numerous areas to see such as the ocean, mountains and highlands.
Landmarks
After enjoying World Heritage sites such as Hiraizumi, Iwate Prefecture’s largest city of Morioka which is the starting point for any sightseeing and the beautiful Jodogahama Beach which is said to be a paradise on Earth, you can also head for places such as Hachimantai where you can soak in the bubbling waters of an onsen while sipping on some sake.
Food
If you’re looking for cuisine, Morioka is the ideal place. The 3 greatest noodle dishes of wanko soba, jajamen and Morioka reimen can be found in Morioka City. The seafood to be found off the Sanriku coast is also famous. This area which has cold and warm currents making contact is well-known as an excellent fishing ground with great hauls and as one of the top three fishing areas on the planet. Sea urchin, scallop, salmon and abalone are especially good.
Getting Around
The JR Tohoku Shinkansen (Bullet Train) is convenient to reach Morioka and Ichinoseki from Tokyo. With the stations there as your starting point, renting a car is handy. There are also plenty of long-distance bus lines running among the cities of Iwate.
Accommodations
There are accommodations at Morioka Station where the Shinkansen stops as well as Ichinoseki Station which is the launching point for any sightseeing in Hiraizumi.

Powerful Typhoon Lionrock has left extensive damage in its wake across northern Japan. Rescue workers are still searching for three men missing in Hokkaido where bridges were washed away in a swollen river.
The typhoon made landfall in Iwate Prefecture on the Pacific coast on Tuesday evening, dumping torrential rain as it traveled across the north. Eleven people have been confirmed dead, all in Iwate Prefecture.
Nine of the dead were elderly people found Wednesday morning in a flooded nursing home in the town of Iwaizumi. The victims were all residents. Another elderly victim was found on a river bank. In Kuji City, an elderly woman was found dead in a house flooded by a nearby river.
Iwaizumi town officials said as of Thursday phone services remained disconnected in a large area of the town and they are unable to contact 17 residents.
Iwate Prefectural officials believe about 1,100 residents in three communities are isolated because of roads made impassable by the typhoon.
In the northern-most prefecture of Hokkaido, three men are still missing after reports of vehicles falling into a river where bridges collapsed.
