Wyre Davies is a Welsh journalist, and South America correspondent for BBC News. He speaks fluent Welsh and Spanish.
His maternal grandfather, Captain Evan Rowlands of Llanon, was captain of Harmanteh, which whilst making passage between Brazil and the West Coast of Canada, on 22 May 1938 whilst under the control of a local pilot ran aground on Zealous Island, Messier Channel, Chile. Subsequently abandoned by her crew, salvage efforts were also abandoned on 6 June. Later he was captain of Stangrant, which during the Battle of the Atlantic was torpedoed and sunk west of the Outer Hebrides (58°27′N 12°36′W / 58.450°N 12.600°W / 58.450; -12.600) by U-37 with the loss of eight of her 38 crew. Survivors including Captain Rowlands were rescued by a Short Sunderland aircraft of 10 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force. Rowlands later retired to Llanrhystud, where Davies was born.
After studying Latin American politics at university, he joined BBC News where, after training, he became a foreign correspondent in Latin America. In 2000 he transferred to a job as correspondent at BBC Wales, reporting on stories across Wales and appearing on Wales Today together with the BBC's Six and Ten o'clock news. He also reported on sports stories.

Wyre is a local government district with borough status in Lancashire, England. The population of the Non-metropolitan district at the 2011 census was 107,749. Its council is based in Poulton-le-Fylde.
The district is named after the River Wyre, which runs through the district. It was formed on 1 April 1974 by the Local Government Act 1972, and was a merger of the municipal borough of Fleetwood, along with Poulton-le-Fylde, Preesall, Garstang and Thornton-Cleveleys urban districts and various Rural Districts.

Reports from Israel say that the Foreign ministry has proposed "toppling" Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas IF a Palestinian bid for state observer status at the UN is approved later this month. BBC 's Wyre Davies spoke about the implications of such a statement to GMT's Naga Munchetty.
Brazil's lower house has voted to start impeachment proceedings against President Dilma Rousseff over charges of manipulating government accounts. The motion will now go to the upper house, the Senate, which is expected to suspend Ms Rousseff next month while it carries out a formal trial. Wyre Davies reports.
