Waiting for Colonel Parker
The man who became famous for being Elvis Presley's manager, has hardly ever been portrayed in a positive light. Colonel Tom Parker is considered to be a crook, a haggler and by some the man who was responsible for the fact that Elvis died at the early age of 42. In the eyes of many people, Parker even became one of the largest and insolent crooks in American history, by continuing to act as Elvis's manager even after his death.
But... was Parker really the swindler he was alleged to be? Were lies and deceit the only things that enabled him to continue being the manager of the King of Rock 'n' Roll for 27 years? A face that reappeared again and again, until it would never fade away from our memory? Was Elvis the only one who deserves merit for this? Or did the Colonel also play a part in it? And which part did he play? And above all: what kind of man was Colonel Thomas A. Parker in real life?

Synopsis
Hij was nog geen twintig jaar oud toen hij als verstekeling van Nederland naar Amerika trok. Zonder opleiding, zonder geld en zonder beheersing van de Engelse taal. Vijfentwintig jaar later is hij de gevierde en gevreesde manager van de King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley en kent de wereld hem als Colonel Tom Parker.
Het zal nog twintig jaar duren, tot in de jaren tachtig, voordat het geheime verleden van Colonel Thomas A. Parker naar boven komt. Dan blijkt dat hij geen weeskind is, afkomstig uit een afgelegen stadje in de Verenigde Staten en opgegroeid in een ponycircus -- het tragische verhaal dat hij zelf in omloop bracht om de wereld zand in de ogen te strooien - maar de op 28 juni 1909 in Breda geboren Andreas Cornelis van Kuijk.
In Looking for Colonel Parker volgt Constant Meijers, gefascineerd door het gegeven dat een Nederlander aan de wieg heeft gestaan van de rock 'n' roll, de levensloop van een ambitieuze en brutale Nederlandse jongen die eind jaren twintig zonder papieren aankwam in de Verenigde Staten, dienst nam in het Amerikaanse leger, zich aansloot bij een van de grootste Amerikaanse kermissen en vervolgens besloot de trucs die hij op de kermis had geleerd in te zetten bij het verkopen van artiesten. Elvis Presley bleek zijn ideale doelwit - een zanger die de wereld aan zijn voeten wist te krijgen maar niet in staat was zijn macht te breken.
Ondanks Parkers twijfelachtige levensloop en ondanks het verwijt dat hij van Elvis profiteerde en te weinig ondernam om hem van zijn ondergang te redden, komt Meijers na een tocht dwars door Amerika tot de conclusie dat de naam van Colonel Parker terecht in één adem wordt genoemd met die van de koning van de rock 'n' roll. Beider talent heeft ze onlosmakelijk aan elkaar geklonken.

"Colonel" Thomas Andrew "Tom" Parker (June 26, 1909 - January 21, 1997), born Andreas Cornelis ("Dries") van Kuijk, was a Dutch-born entertainment impresario known best as the manager of Elvis Presley.
His management of Presley re-wrote the role of talent manager and was seen as central to the astonishing success of Presley's career.
He displayed a ruthless devotion to his client's interests, took far more than the traditional 10 percent of his earnings (reaching up to 50 percent by the end of Presley's), and piloted him to global superstardom.
Parker held the reins of Presley's singing and acting career for the rest of Presley's life and was said to be instrumental in virtually every business decision that Presley made — including his decision to cut back on recording and stop touring after returning from his stint in the United States Army in 1960 in favor of a film career (from 1960 to 1967-68) that was lucrative in terms of his bank account but, to many critics and fans, bankrupting in terms of Presley's music quality.
Parker died of a stroke on January 21, 1997, in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the age of 87.

D. J. Fontana played drums behind Elvis in concerts, on TV and in the movies for fourteen years. In this 1999 interview, he reveals some aspects of his Elvis years that have not been told before or since. His descriptions and attitude about Col. Tom Parker and the Memphis "Mafia" are telling in the context of the times. Life for the original musicians, Scotty Moore, Bill Black and D. J. should have been different had they been treated properly or, at the very least, paid for the caliber of work they produced. Sure, Elvis was great, but without that original band would he have made it out of Memphis? We will never know - we just thank God that "Big Bang" of musicians hit it at just the right time.

There are so many things wrong with this story and things left out of this story. First, both paramedics, Ulysses S. Jones and Charlie Crosby, said it was not Elvis on the bathroom floor of Graceland. Second, who gives heart massage to a body in rigor mortis? This body had obviously been dead for several hours. Why would Dr. Nick be talking to a body in rigor mortis and saying, "Hang in there" and putting oxygen on him? Surely his training at medical school was better than that. Why would it take the hospital staff 20 minutes to determine that a body in rigor mortis was dead? Why did Elvis' father, Vernon, never bother to go to the hospital and, in fact, stayed behind and did a radio interview, showing no emotion, and signed a deal with Colonel Tom Parker on the same day? Joe has never been able to keep his stories straight. In one interview he said that Elvis was found in the bed.

Parker was born Andreas Cornelis van Kuijk in Breda, the Netherlands, the seventh of eleven children. As a boy, he worked as a barker at carnivals in his home town, learning many of the attributes that he would require in later life working in the entertainment industry.

Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977) was one of the most popular American singers of the 20th century. A cultural icon, he is widely known by the single name Elvis. He is often referred to as the "King of Rock and Roll" or simply "the King".
Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, Presley moved to Memphis, Tennessee, with his family at the age of 13. He began his career there in 1954, working with Sun Records owner Sam Phillips, who wanted to bring the sound of African American music to a wider audience. Accompanied by guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, Presley was the most important popularizer of rockabilly, an uptempo, backbeat-driven fusion of country and rhythm and blues. RCA Victor acquired his contract in a deal arranged by Colonel Tom Parker, who would manage the singer for over two decades. Presley's first RCA single, "Heartbreak Hotel", released in January 1956, was a number one hit. He became the leading figure of the newly popular sound of rock and roll with a series of network television appearances and chart-topping records. His energized interpretations of songs, many from African American sources, and his uninhibited performance style made him enormously popular—and controversial. In November 1956, he made his film debut in Love Me Tender.

Hij was nog geen twintig jaar oud toen hij als verstekeling van Nederland naar Amerika trok. Zonder opleiding, zonder geld en zonder beheersing van de Engelse taal. Vijfentwintig jaar later is hij de gevierde en gevreesde manager van de King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley en kent de wereld hem als Colonel Tom Parker.
Het zal nog twintig jaar duren, tot in de jaren tachtig, voordat het geheime verleden van Colonel Thomas A. Parker naar boven komt. Dan blijkt dat hij geen weeskind is, afkomstig uit een afgelegen stadje in de Verenigde Staten en opgegroeid in een ponycircus -- het tragische verhaal dat hij zelf in omloop bracht om de wereld zand in de ogen te strooien - maar de op 28 juni 1909 in Breda geboren Andreas Cornelis van Kuijk.
In Looking for Colonel Parker volgt Constant Meijers, gefascineerd door het gegeven dat een Nederlander aan de wieg heeft gestaan van de rock 'n' roll, de levensloop van een ambitieuze en brutale Nederlandse jongen die eind jaren twintig zonder papieren aankwam in de Verenigde Staten, dienst nam in het Amerikaanse leger, zich aansloot bij een van de grootste Amerikaanse kermissen en vervolgens besloot de trucs die hij op de kermis had geleerd in te zetten bij het verkopen van artiesten. Elvis Presley bleek zijn ideale doelwit - een zanger die de wereld aan zijn voeten wist te krijgen maar niet in staat was zijn macht te breken.
Ondanks Parkers twijfelachtige levensloop en ondanks het verwijt dat hij van Elvis profiteerde en te weinig ondernam om hem van zijn ondergang te redden, komt Meijers na een tocht dwars door Amerika tot de conclusie dat de naam van Colonel Parker terecht in één adem wordt genoemd met die van de koning van de rock 'n' roll. D. J. Fontana played drums behind Elvis in concerts, on TV and in the movies for fourteen years. In this 1999 interview, he reveals some aspects of his Elvis years that have not been told before or since. His descriptions and attitude about Col. Tom Parker and the Memphis "Mafia" are telling in the context of the times. Life for the original musicians, Scotty Moore, Bill Black and D. J. should have been different had they been treated properly or, at the very least, paid for the caliber of work they produced. Sure, Elvis was great, but without that original band would he have made it out of Memphis? We will never know - we just thank God that "Big Bang" of musicians hit it at just the right time.

Jones and Charlie Crosby, said it was not Elvis on the bathroom floor of Graceland. Second, who gives heart massage to a body in rigor mortis? This body had obviously been dead for several hours. Why would Dr. Nick be talking to a body in rigor mortis and saying, "Hang in there" and putting oxygen on him? Surely his training at medical school was better than that. Why would it take the hospital staff 20 minutes to determine that a body in rigor mortis was dead? Why did Elvis' father, Vernon, never bother to go to the hospital and, in fact, stayed behind and did a radio interview, showing no emotion, and signed a deal with Colonel Tom Parker on the same day? Joe has never been able to keep his stories straight. In one interview he said that Elvis was found in the bed.

At Sound Liaison we believe that when we get the musicians to play together in the same room,with out headphones,
it creates a number of musical and technical benefits. ......
the musicians interact much more as they would do in a concert situation,
as they are not ''separated'' by the headphones,
the musicians are forced to create a musical balance,
the need for compression to control levels is no longer necessary,
we can use a minimalist microphone setup and there by reduce phase problems,
since everybody is in the same room,the boxed sound which is so common in many modern recordings is absent,
and the sound of the room helps ''glue'' the sound of the recording.
This is all very well but there are also problematic aspects to this procedure:
the room,studio,has to have a good sound
the musicians have to be very good and well prepared as
it is very difficult to repair mistakes because of the ''cross talk'' between the instruments,
we have to be very precise when choosing and placing the microphones,
and the puzzle of placing the musicians at the right distance to the main stereo microphones and the right distance to each other,is also time consuming.
and when we have a live audience in the studio,as we do with our Studio Showcase Series,
we pray that they remembered to turn of their cell phones and the ones with the bad cold chose to stay home.
The room where the recordings has been done is the now legendary Studio Eleven situated in the basement of the building of the Dutch World Broad Casting Service.
The Studio was used extensively in the 60's by European and visiting American jazz musicians(Wes Montgomery, Cannonball Adderley,Dexter Gordon,Eric Dolphy.....)
The Dutch World Broad Casting Service asked Frans de Rond to bring the room back to life as a recording studio,and Frans after seeing and hearing the room jumped at the opportunity.
SoundLiaison has been allowed to use the room during off hours,for our audiophile project,and we are eternally great full to the Dutch World Service for the opportunity.

Colonel Tom Parker wordt op 26 Juni 1909 in Breda in Nederland als Andreas (Dries) Cornelis van Kuijk geboren.
Dries was de zoon van Adam en Marie van Kuijk. Hij werd geboren aan de Vlaszak in Breda.
Vader Van Kuijk was een voormalig militair en werkte als koetsier/stalmeester voor transportbedrijf Van Gend & Loos in Breda, dat in die tijd gevestigd was aan de Veemarktstraat vlakbij de Vlaszak.
Het gezin woonde boven de stallen. Hij verdiende geld met allerlei baantjes, onder andere het dragen van bagage voor reizigers op het station, en het lopen met reclameborden van circussen die de stad bezochten. In de stallen van zijn vader ontwikkelde Dries op zondagmiddagen zijn eerste voorliefde voor het circus. Hier demonstreerde hij broers, zusters en vriendjes hoe vaardig hij de paarden kon dresseren.
Op twintigjarige leeftijd wordt hij verdacht van de moord op de vrouw van een groenteboer uit Breda.
Dries van Kuijk vlucht, zonder papieren, naar Amerika.
Hier begint hij zijn carriere met The Great Parker Pony Circus en de act Colonel Tom Parker And His Dancing Chickens.
Daarbij laat hij kippen op een, met zaagsel bedekte, kokend hete plaat dansen.
Later wordt hij manager van Eddy Arnold, Hank Snow en Gene Austin. Met Hank Snow richt hij medio jaren vijftig in Nashville een impresariaat op. Hij begint optredens voor Elvis Presley te boeken.

Early Interest in Music
Musician and actor Elvis Aron Presley was born on January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi. (He later changed the spelling of his middle name to the biblical form of Aaron.) Presley was supposed to be a twin, but his brother, Jesse Garon (sometimes spelled Jessie) was stillborn. From very humble beginnings, Elvis Presley grew up to become one of the biggest names in rock 'n' roll.
Raised by loving, working-class parents, Presley's family had little money, and they moved from place to place frequently. He was deeply devoted to his parents, especially his mother, Gladys, and was raised to have a strong faith in God. Presley attended the Assembly of God Church with his parents, where gospel music became an important influence for him.
Presley received his first guitar as a gift from his mother on his 11th birthday in 1946 and had his first taste of musical success a few years later when he won a talent show at Humes High School in Memphis. After graduating in 1953, he worked a number of jobs while pursuing his musical dream. He cut his first demo record at what later became known as Sun Studio that year, and before long, Sam Phillips, the record label owner, decided to take the young performer under his wing. Presley soon began touring and recording, trying to catch his first big break. "That's All Right" was Presley's first single in 1954.
First No. 1 Hit
In 1955, Presley began to develop a following with fans being drawn to his unusual musical style, provocative gyrating hips and good looks. That same year, he signed with RCA Records, a deal worked out by his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Presley was on a roll, scoring his first No. 1 single with "Heartbreak Hotel," as well as his first No. 1 album, Elvis Presley, and signing a movie contract with Paramount Pictures—all in 1956. Despite the uproar that his sexy dance moves caused, he also became a popular guest on a number of television variety shows.
Soon, Presley was everywhere—on the radio, television and the silver screen—working as a musician and actor. His first film, Love Me Tender (1956), was a box office hit. Even a stint in the U.S. military couldn't put a damper on Presley's thriving career. He received his draft notice in 1957, and was inducted into the Army the following March. He eventually served in Germany for about a year and a half. Shortly before Presley left for Europe, his beloved mother, Gladys, died. He was granted a leave and returned to Memphis for the funeral. Deeply saddened by her death, Presley returned to duty. While in Germany, his spirits were lifted slightly when he met a young teenager named Priscilla Beaulieu.

Welcome to Las Vegas, where Elvis has not left the building. Graceland may be home to his shrine but Elvis forged a lasting bond with the Las Vegas, thanks to a seven-year run between 1969 and 1976. Rob Brydon, an Elvis fan, revisits this golden period in a remarkable career.
The 1969 Memphis Sessions at American Studios in Memphis re-established Presley as a musical force, returning him to the charts and producing some of his most acclaimed work. Presley's manager, Col. Tom Parker, was planning Presley's return to live concerts with a series of shows at the International Hotel in Las Vegas later that year.
Elvis assembled a new live band for his first Las Vegas concerts. We hear about rehearsals in the summer of 1969, and the buoyant mood within the Presley camp, from lead guitarist James Burton and legendary Presley road manager Joe Esposito. On July 31 1969, Elvis walked out on stage in front of a paying audience for the first time eight years.
The band, as we hear through live recordings, were superb. Singers Myra Smith and Estelle Brown reveal what it was like performing on stage, night after night, with Elvis. Things went well and Elvis went on to perform regular shows there for seven years - a total of 637 consecutive sold-out performances in front of 2.5 million people.
Presley completed his four week stint on 28 August 1969. His fee for that initial season was in the region of 100 thousand dollars a week. That month the Hilton took one and a half million dollars...and that figure doesn't even include takings from the casino!
When Presley returned in January 1970 for his winter season, he and his entourage made a considerable impact on life at the Hilton International Hotel, as we hear from valet Lonnie Pope and bell boy Dan Hakata. When Elvis swept into town, he would set up in his hotel suite and establish a routine: karate, rehearsals with the band and then two shows a night - at 8 pm and midnight. After the shows, he would retire to his 30th floor suite, sit at the piano and sing the gospel songs of his childhood.
But things did get pretty intense on the road and the FBI and Presley's personal body guards were on full alert following a death threat which claimed the King would be shot on stage. Jerry Schilling, one of Presley's inner circle and Memphis Mafia, talks us through the events surrounding Presley's security.
Any programme exploring this period has to acknowledge Presley's use of prescription drugs and his escalating weight. The Presley jump suits in white, blue and orange would become synonymous with Elvis in Vegas but the bespoke jumpsuits had to adjust to his expanding midriff. Band members reveal how Elvis' personal problems affected life on stage and off.

Together, they starred in 220 episodes which aired weekly on Mondays from 8:30 to 9:00pm. Bromo Quinine sponsored some of the earlier programs on the NBC Blue Network and for a period Parker Pen was the sponsor. The show first aired on the Blue Network but later moved to the Mutual Broadcasting System. It was originally broadcast from Hollywood. During World War II, the show was also broadcast overseas through the Armed Forces Radio Service. It is unknown exactly how many of the original 220 shows have survived, 53 are currently known to be in circulation.
Basil Rathbone's last episode as the famous Detective was "The Singular Affair of the Baconian Cipher." He was eager to separate himself from the show to avoid being typecast as Sherlock Holmes, and even though the show's sponsor Petri Wine offered him generous pay to continue, he decided to move on. Once he did, the sponsor did as well, and Tom Conway took the starring role, though Nigel Bruce got top billing and was always announced first. The new sponsor was Kreml Hair Tonic for Men, and the new series lasted only 39 episodes. Bruce and Conway then left the series. From then until 1950 the series continued as "Sherlock Holmes" with various actors playing the two principle parts. With Rathbone and Bruce, the show exhibited an interesting introduction. The sponsor's spokesman, usually Knox Manning or Harry Bartell, or, during the show's initial season and again in the final season, Joseph Bell, would show up weekly at Dr. Watson's house (then retired and living in California), and share a story about Holmes and his adventures over a glass of Petri wine. This offered them the chance to sometimes bring in other characters to contribute to the story, and also gave Watson a chance to summarize or add additional titbits at the end. Another interesting thing about this radio show's introductions was Dr. Watson's anecdotes and comments about his dogs usually referred to as the "Puppies."
