From signposts to school textbooks, Malay-Muslims are reclaiming their native Jawi script in public life after decades of forced assimilation policies by the Thai government.
JAWI is commonly used in the Malay Archipelago, which is located in the Southeast Asia, during the older days. However, as time goes by, the Jawi Script is being replaced with a simplified version called Rumi. Jawi is no longer being seen or written in Singapore, except for religious purposes. Therefore, I have decided to expose Jawi Script to the younger generation of the Malay Community to appreaciate it's beauty and art, as well as making Jawi Script as a part of their identity!

The Arabic script has been adopted for use in a wide variety of languages besides Arabic, including Persian, Kurdish, Malay, and Urdu, which are not Semitic. Such adaptations may feature altered or new characters to represent phonemes that do not appear in Arabic phonology. For example, the Arabic language lacks a voiceless bilabial plosive (the [p] sound), so many languages add their own letter to represent [p] in the script, though the specific letter used varies from language to language. These modifications tend to fall into groups: all the Indian and Turkic languages written in Arabic script tend to use the Persian modified letters, whereas Indonesian languages tend to imitate those of Jawi. The modified version of the Arabic script originally devised for use with Persian is known as the Perso-Arabic script by scholars.
In the case of Kurdish, vowels are mandatory, making the script an abugida rather than an abjad as it is for most languages. Kashmiri and Uyghur, also, write all vowels.
To a certain degree the style and usage tends to follow those of the Maghreb (for instance the position of the dots in the letters fāʾ and qāf). Additional diacritics have come into use to facilitate writing of sounds not represented in the Arabic language. The term ʿAǧamī, which comes from the Arabic root for "foreign", has been applied to Arabic-based orthographies of African languages.
The Arabic script is written from right to left, in a cursive style, and includes 28 basic letters.

TERSEMBUNYI - Penangan Al-Marhum Datuk (Demo 2015)
Hah, first things that caught my attention from this CD is the Jawi script. Yes indeed, its really hard these days to see this ancient writing being used anywhere in Malaysia. Its almost wipe out from the Malays heart. Damn, very soon it will be extinct to the core just like the dinosour. Sad but true. Ok, my thanx to Andika of Jugra for sending me this unique CD. Yes indeed, I've never seen before any metal bands using Jawi as their text in the CD inlay. Tersembunyi seems the first one to promote this old writing so proudly. Ok, what we can have in this Penangan Al-Marhum Datuk is the old skool BM early 90s. Well, they have name it as Nusantara Pagan Black Metal. Hmm.. think about As Sahar era Primitively.. and Phenomistik then you can imagine their style. Its full of darker atmospheric touch which was dominated by the keyboard. Hah, sometimes it reminds me of the early days of BM in Malaysia where lots of eastern folks sounds was created in their rusty music. Yes indeed and their music almost like the old days which was totally raw, rusty and dirty kinda sounds. Hah, it could be due to budget constraint or maybe they want it that way. Hmm.. its kinda weird in the 21st century but then maybe they have their own reason hahaa.. Anyway lets talk more about this band and just forget about the sounds quality. Tersembunyi seems quite unknown to me until Andika introduced me their CD. As based on the trax featured I would assume that they have a bit similar objectives like Singhasari and Jugra. They were so much proud of the Malay or Nusantara roots and its heritage. You can clearly see in the trax 7 - Keris & Pemuras which was featured the Malay folk/traditional music. They were so much inspired by the supremacy of the ancient Malays warriors who are so brave to fight for their pride and dignity. Ok, we have 8 trax available in this demo or should I say a debut album which all of them are in Bahasa Melayu and written in Jawi. Hmm.. quite mysterious band actually coz until now I didnt know the real members. Not much info also available in the net. Anyway Tersembunyi is actually one of the members in the Darah & Maruah movement. Ok, its a good stuffs and you are recommended to try this at home. Jawi (Jawi: جاوي Jāwī; Pattani: Yawi; Acehnese: Jawoë) is an Arabic alphabet for writing the Malay language, Acehnese, Banjarese, Minangkabau, Tausug and several other languages in Southeast Asia.
Jawi is one of the two official scripts in Brunei, and is used as an alternate script in Malaysia. Usage wise, it was the standard script for the Malay language but has since been replaced by a Latin alphabet called Rumi, and Jawi has since been relegated to a script used for religious and cultural purposes. Day-to-day usage of Jawi is maintained in more conservative Malay-populated areas such as Pattani in Thailand and Kelantan in Malaysia..
The Jawi alphabet has existed since around 1300 CE in the Malay Archipelago. Its development is linked with the arrival of Islam, mainly from Persians. It was adapted to suit spoken classical Malay – it is written from right to left and has 6 sounds not found in Arabic: ca pa ga nga va and nya. Many Arabic characters are never used as they are not pronounced in Malay language, and some letters are never joined and some joined obligatorily so.

JAWI - A Lost Identity
JAWI is commonly used in the Malay Archipelago, which is located in the Southeast Asia, during the older days. However, as time goes by, the Jawi Script is being replaced with a simplified version called Rumi. Jawi is no longer being seen or written in Singapore, except for religious purposes. Therefore, I have decided to expose Jawi Script to the younger generation of the Malay Community to appreaciate it's beauty and art, as well as making Jawi Script as a part of their identity! -

The Arabic script has been adopted for use in a wide variety of languages besides Arabic, including Persian, Kurdish, Malay, and Urdu, which are not Semitic. Such adaptations may feature altered or new characters to represent phonemes that do not appear in Arabic phonology. For example, the Arabic language lacks a voiceless bilabial plosive (the [p] sound), so many languages add their own letter to represent [p] in the script, though the specific letter used varies from language to language. These modifications tend to fall into groups: all the Indian and Turkic languages written in Arabic script tend to use the Persian modified letters, whereas Indonesian languages tend to imitate those of Jawi. The modified version of the Arabic script originally devised for use with Persian is known as the Perso-Arabic script by scholars.
In the case of Kurdish, vowels are mandatory, making the script an abugida rather than an abjad as it is for most languages. Kashmiri and Uyghur, also, write all vowels.
To a certain degree the style and usage tends to follow those of the Maghreb (for instance the position of the dots in the letters fāʾ and qāf). Additional diacritics have come into use to facilitate writing of sounds not represented in the Arabic language. The term ʿAǧamī, which comes from the Arabic root for "foreign", has been applied to Arabic-based orthographies of African languages.

TERSEMBUNYI - Penangan Al-Marhum Datuk (Demo 2015)
Hah, first things that caught my attention from this CD is the Jawi script. Yes indeed, its really hard these days to see this ancient writing being used anywhere in Malaysia. Its almost wipe out from the Malays heart. Damn, very soon it will be extinct to the core just like the dinosour. Sad but true. Ok, my thanx to Andika of Jugra for sending me this unique CD. Yes indeed, I've never seen before any metal bands using Jawi as their text in the CD inlay. Tersembunyi seems the first one to promote this old writing so proudly. Ok, what we can have in this Penangan Al-Marhum Datuk is the old skool BM early 90s. Well, they have name it as Nusantara Pagan Black Metal. Hmm.. think about As Sahar era Primitively.. and Phenomistik then you can imagine their style. Its full of darker atmospheric touch which was dominated by the keyboard. Hah, sometimes it reminds me of the early days of BM in Malaysia where lots of eastern folks sounds was created in their rusty music. Yes indeed and their music almost like the old days which was totally raw, rusty and dirty kinda sounds. Hah, it could be due to budget constraint or maybe they want it that way. Hmm.. its kinda weird in the 21st century but then maybe they have their own reason hahaa.. Anyway lets talk more about this band and just forget about the sounds quality. Tersembunyi seems quite unknown to me until Andika introduced me their CD. As based on the trax featured I would assume that they have a bit similar objectives like Singhasari and Jugra. They were so much proud of the Malay or Nusantara roots and its heritage. You can clearly see in the trax 7 - Keris & Pemuras which was featured the Malay folk/traditional music. They were so much inspired by the supremacy of the ancient Malays warriors who are so brave to fight for their pride and dignity. Ok, we have 8 trax available in this demo or should I say a debut album which all of them are in Bahasa Melayu and written in Jawi. Hmm.. quite mysterious band actually coz until now I didnt know the real members. Not much info also available in the net. Anyway Tersembunyi is actually one of the members in the Darah & Maruah movement. Ok, its a good stuffs and you are recommended to try this at home. It was unleashed by the Produksi Purnama with the collaboration of the MTD Prod. So, just ask the label at mtd_prod666@yahoo.com for a copy ~ Mr Ed Sangwitok

City is located by the Siak River, which drains to the Strait of Malacca that makes Pekanbaru has direct access to the busy strait and was long known as a trading port.
