Description: The Aka Pygmies living in the south-west region of the Central African Republic have developed a distinctive vocal musical tradition, which involves a complex type of contrapuntal polyphony based on four voices, mastered by all members of the Aka community.
Music and dance form an integral part of Aka rituals including ceremonies related to the inauguration of new encampments, hunting and funerals. Unlike polyphonic systems that are written down in notation, the vocal tradition of the Aka Pygmies allows for spontaneous expression and improvisation. During performances, each singer can change his or her voice to produce a multitude of variations, creating the impression that the music is continuously evolving. The songs are generally accompanied by various percussion and string instruments, each one played for a specific occasion.Among the most common instruments are a local type of drum (enzeko), a harp-like instrument known as the geedale-bagongo, and the single-string bow (mbela). The songs perpetuate essential knowledge for the cohesion of the group and the preservation of community values. The dances are performed to the accompaniment of vibrant hand-clapping. Depending on the ritual, some dances feature men only, while others may be executed by couples or by male and female solo dancers. Relying entirely on oral transmission, the Aka Pygmies have succeeded in preserving their musical knowledge within the community by including children in rituals from an early age.
The lifestyle of the Aka Pygmies has been drastically disrupted due to the changes currently taking place in the Central African Republic. The scarcity of game resulting from deforestation, the rural exodus and the folklorization of their heritage for the tourist industry are the principal factors contributing to the gradual disappearance of many of their traditional customs, rituals and skills.

Pygmy is a term used for various ethnic groups worldwide whose average height is unusually short; anthropologists define pygmy as any group whose adult men grow to less than 150 cm (59 inches) in average height. A member of a slightly taller group is termed "pygmoid." The best known pygmies are the Aka, Efé and Mbuti of central Africa. There are also pygmies in Australia, Thailand, Malaysia,Indonesia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, and Brazil. The term also includes the Negritos of Southeast Asia.
The term "pygmy" is sometimes considered pejorative. However, there is no single term to replace it. Many so-called pygmies prefer instead to be referred to by the name of their various ethnic groups, or names for various interrelated groups such as the Aka (Mbenga), Baka, Mbuti, and Twa. The term Bayaka, the plural form of the Aka/Yaka, is sometimes used in the Central African Republic to refer to all local Pygmies. Likewise, the Kongo word Bambenga is used in Congo.
The term pygmy, as used to refer to diminutive people, derives from Greek πυγμαίος Pygmaios via Latin Pygmaei (sing. Pygmaeus), derived from πυγμή – a fist, or a measure of length corresponding to the distance between the elbow and knuckles. (See also Greek pechus). In Greek mythology the word describes a tribe of dwarfs, first described by Homer, and reputed to live in India and south of modern day Ethiopia.

Traditional music - hunter gatherer culture - humanitarian aid - and amazingly sweet people, my family, the Mbuti Pygmies! To get here we have to drive about 5 hours through Eastern Congo, the forest, and on awful dirt "roads" the entire time. Then we have to hike for over 1 hour with over 1 ton of tools, pipes, equipment, and bags of cement, gravel pack, and construction gravel/rocks! That was through the mud and around, under, and over trees in the second largest rainforest in the world. So thankful for the help of the Water4 team supporting our Fight For The Forgotten and Shalom University drilling team! Come on an awesome tour thru a Pygmy village! DEEP in the Congo Rainforest (FFTF)
Traditional music - hunter gatherer culture - humanitarian aid - and amazingly sweet people, my family, the Mbuti Pygmies! To get here we have to drive about 5 hours through Eastern Congo, the forest, and on awful dirt "roads" the entire time. Then we have to hike for over 1 hour with over 1 ton of tools, pipes, equipment, and bags of cement, gravel pack, and construction gravel/rocks! That was through the mud and around, under, and over trees in the second largest rainforest in the world. So thankful for the help of the Water4 team supporting our Fight For The Forgotten and Shalom University drilling team! Tom has been hand rearing the baby goat day and night and now he has turned a corner and really healthy. Benjamin follows Tom everywhere at Pot House Hamlet, he meets and greets the customers and loves to skip and jump around the place. Description: The Aka Pygmies living in the south-west region of the Central African Republic have developed a distinctive vocal musical tradition, which involves a complex type of contrapuntal polyphony based on four voices, mastered by all members of the Aka community.
Music and dance form an integral part of Aka rituals including ceremonies related to the inauguration of new encampments, hunting and funerals. Unlike polyphonic systems that are written down in notation, the vocal tradition of the Aka Pygmies allows for spontaneous expression and improvisation. During performances, each singer can change his or her voice to produce a multitude of variations, creating the impression that the music is continuously evolving. The songs are generally accompanied by various percussion and string instruments, each one played for a specific occasion.Among the most common instruments are a local type of drum (enzeko), a harp-like instrument known as the geedale-bagongo, and the single-string bow (mbela). The songs perpetuate essential knowledge for the cohesion of the group and the preservation of community values. The dances are performed to the accompaniment of vibrant hand-clapping. Depending on the ritual, some dances feature men only, while others may be executed by couples or by male and female solo dancers. Relying entirely on oral transmission, the Aka Pygmies have succeeded in preserving their musical knowledge within the community by including children in rituals from an early age.
The lifestyle of the Aka Pygmies has been drastically disrupted due to the changes currently taking place in the Central African Republic. The scarcity of game resulting from deforestation, the rural exodus and the folklorization of their heritage for the tourist industry are the principal factors contributing to the gradual disappearance of many of their traditional customs, rituals and skills.

Materials needed for this project:
-Pattern pdf, printed out. Download it here: http://www.laurenfairweather.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/pygmypufftemplate.pdf
-Fabric scissors and regular scissors
-Fluffy pink fabric for the body
-White fleece for the face/ears
-Black felt for the eyes
-A marker, disappearing ink, or chalk to mark the pattern onto the fabric
-Sewing pins
-Sewing machine (optional) or you can hand sew it.
-Black and white embroidery floss or pearl cotton and an embroidery needle
-Sewing thread (pink and white) and a sewing needle
-Polyester fiberfill or other stuffing
-Wooden dowel

When we heard that our pal's family farm had just acquired three baby pygmy goats (easily one of the top ten cutest animals of all time), we set out to meet them ASAP. The goats, named Morning, Noon, and Night, were sweet as can be and we spent two blissful days crawling around the grass with them. We contemplated stealing one, but that would be wrong, so we filmed our experience instead. Enjoy!

Benjamin follows Tom everywhere at Pot House Hamlet, he meets and greets the customers and loves to skip and jump around the place.
Ian White from the BBC visited Pot House Hamlet to produce a segment for the news.
