Clearing out some of my crime files I came across this video of the interrogation of Canadian Forces Air Force Colonel Russell Williams by Detective Sergeant Jim Smyth of the Ontario Provincial Police's Behavioural Sciences Unit. Here is a masterful deconstruction: A confident and cocky military man strode into the interview room and a broken and degenerate killer and sexual sadist shuffled out, after being prompted to confess his shocking crimes, as I wrote about it when I covered the case in 2010. Before agreeing to sit down with Det.-Sgt. Jim Smyth, Williams might have done well to have remembered the motto of 8 Wing, the Trenton, Ont., air force unit he commanded: in omnia paratus. "Prepare for all things." For on this afternoon, it was police, not the calculating, obsessive deviant w...
I've been following Drew Millard on Twitter for a few years now ever since he first got hired by Vice to helm their once-fledgling music vertical, Noisey. Recently Drew made the move to LA and switched his style up, leaving music journalism behind to work for Vice full time. I had him come down to the OSS store along with his good friend and similarly prolific Tweeter, Robesman and we had a great conversation that stretched on into the night, casually crossing the 2 hour mark, a first in my time doing podcasts. Check out the list of topics below, follow @drewmillard, @robesman and @onsomeshit on Twitter and enjoy: 00:45 Emo night and drinking cork dust 03:30 Quitting drinking 05:10 Reviewing shows for a living 08:00 Riff Raff sliding in Robesman’s DMs 12:45 Travis Scott 16:00 Kanye’s “All...
Colonel Russell Williams was commander of Canada’s largest military airbase while he was secretly raping and murdering women. This is the case against Williams for count two of his murder charges, the killing of Jessica Lloyd, 27, of Belleville, Ont. This is the prosecution’s summary of physical and forensic evidence against William’s in Lloyd’s murder shown to the judge at William’s trial and sentencing in 2010 after his guilty pleas, which I covered as a reporter with the National Post. I pulled the presentation from my crime archives from the trial. The presentation regarding William’s second murder victim, Marie-France Comeau, is here: https://youtu.be/ACtq59ew8gA Williams was also convicted of breaking and entering dozens of homes and stealing women’s and girl’s lingerie and underwe...
ROGP 063. Millard Grimes interviewed by Bob Short, January 7, 2009. Millard Grimes worked as an editor for The Red and Black, and graduated from UGA with a degree in journalism in 1951. He returned to the Columbus Ledger as associate news editor, and in 1955 the newspaper won a Pulitzer Prize for documenting corruption in Phenix City, Alabama. He then served as publishing chief executive officer at numerous newspapers, including the Opelika-Auburn News and the Rockdale Citizen. In 1991, he entered magazine publishing when he purchased the Georgia Journal and Georgia Trend. The other day we were lucky enough to get rising comedy star and friend of the show Brandon Wardell in the studio for an in depth look into his career and what makes him tick. Along the way Lil House Phone attempted to steal the show by arriving surrounded by porn stars but I think the interview came out pretty good anyway. --- No Jumper is The Coolest Podcast In The World. Michael Dunn's interview with the police after he killed Jordan Davis.
Michael Rafferty and his girlfriend, Terri-Lynne McClintic lured eight-year-old Tori Stafford from her school in Woodstock, Ont., and drove her to a secluded field, where she was sexually assaulted and brutally beaten to death in April 2009. It was a sickening and nightmarish crime and covering it still haunts me. On May 19 to 20, 2009, he was arrested and Ontario Provincial Police detectives interviewed him for four hours. Interviewers included Detective Sergeant Jim Smyth, who drew wide acclaim for prying a full confession from Col. Russell Williams, a former commander of a Canadian Forces air base, for brutal sexual assaults and murders of two women. That masterful display can be seen here: https://youtu.be/bsLbDzkIy3A Playing the “good cop” in the marathon interrogation of Rafferty wa...

Continuing to cull through my crime files, here is a striking video of the jailhouse interview of Paul Bernardo, perpetrator of what his victims' lawyer called "the most sensational crime in Canadian history." Bernardo and his wife, Karla Homolka, became notorious for the abduction, rape and murder of two Ontario school girls, 14-year-old Leslie Mahaffy and 15-year-old Kristen French. Bernardo also raped 20 other women, known as the "Scarborough rapist" attacks, after the area of Toronto where they took place. Extracts from the interview were filed in court in connection with an application by a London, Ont., man who was convicted of an attack on a 15-year-old girl in 1989 to which Bernardo has now confessed to committing. The wrongful conviction was a story I broke in the National Post o...

You must be a light to yourself
And to be a light to yourself you must deny every other
light
However great that light be
You must be a light to yourself
You must be a light to yourself
I was in a book of love
Cast the brave loser
The writer chose to give me time
And chose you as my accuser
Page one, the scene was set
A love story, then the fall
By chapter two, the thing I thought I knew
Was not a love at all
This book of love, if it's what you say
What you're thinking of, it's not a price you pay
And where I am your words follow me
If you give a damn just how love should be
If you really love me, you'd let me go
I was in a book of love
It had no hero, no bad one
Because you don't know love at all
You became the sad one
You've been searching all your life
Still you don't see
Take a look inside yourself
It's there the book will be
This book of love, if it's what you say
What you're thinking of, it's not a price you pay
And where I am your words follow me
If you give a damn just how love should be
If you believe in love, with love let go
So you must be a light to yourself
And to be a light to yourself you must deny every other
light
However great that light be
Read the book and pass it on
Read the book and pass it on
Read the book and pass it on
Read the book and pass it on
Read the book, read the book of love
Read the book, read the book of love
If you really love me, you'd let me go
Read the book and pass it on
Read the book and pass it on
Read the book and pass it on
Read the book and pass it on
Read the book and pass it on
Read the book and pass it on
Read the book and pass it on
Read the book and pass it on
Read the book and pass it on
Read the book and pass it on
Read the book and pass it on
Read the book and pass it on
Read the book and pass it on
Read the book and pass it on
Read the book and pass it on
Read the book and pass it on
Read the book and pass it on
Read the book and pass it on
Read the book and pass it on
Read the book and pass it on
Read the book and pass it on
Read the book and pass it on
Read the book
We have never attempted deeply to read the book of
