The Galápagos Islands (official name: Archipiélago de Colón, other Spanish name: Islas Galápagos, Spanish pronunciation: [ˈislas gaˈlapaɣos]) are an archipelago of volcanic islands distributed on either side of the Equator in the Pacific Ocean, 906 km (563 mi) west of continental Ecuador, of which they are a part.
The Galápagos Islands and their surrounding waters form the Galápagos Province of Ecuador, the Galápagos National Park, and the Galápagos Marine Reserve. The principal language on the islands is Spanish. The islands have a population of slightly over 25,000.
The islands are famed for their vast number of endemic species and were studied by Charles Darwin during the voyage of the Beagle. His observations and collections contributed to the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection.
The first recorded visit to the islands happened by chance in 1535, when the Bishop of Panamá Fray Tomás de Berlanga went to Peru to arbitrate in a dispute between Francisco Pizarro and Diego de Almagro. De Berlanga was blown off course, though he eventually returned to the Spanish Empire and described the conditions of the islands and the animals that inhabited them. The group of islands was shown and named in Abraham Ortelius's atlas published in 1570. The first crude map of the islands was made in 1684 by the buccaneer Ambrose Cowley, who named the individual islands after some of his fellow pirates or after British royalty and noblemen. These names were used in the authoritative navigation charts of the islands prepared during the Beagle survey under captain Robert Fitzroy, and in Darwin's popular book The Voyage of the Beagle. The new Republic of Ecuador took the islands from Spanish ownership in 1832, and subsequently gave them official Spanish names. The older names remained in use in English language publications, including Herman Melville's The Encantadas of 1854.
Charles Robert Darwin, FRS FRGS FLS FZS (/ˈdɑːrwɪn/; 12 February 1809 – 19 April 1882) was an English naturalist and geologist, best known for his contributions to evolutionary theory. He established that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors, and in a joint publication with Alfred Russel Wallace introduced his scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection, in which the struggle for existence has a similar effect to the artificial selection involved in selective breeding.
Darwin published his theory of evolution with compelling evidence in his 1859 book On the Origin of Species, overcoming scientific rejection of earlier concepts of transmutation of species. By the 1870s, the scientific community and much of the general public had accepted evolution as a fact. However, many favoured competing explanations and it was not until the emergence of the modern evolutionary synthesis from the 1930s to the 1950s that a broad consensus developed in which natural selection was the basic mechanism of evolution. In modified form, Darwin's scientific discovery is the unifying theory of the life sciences, explaining the diversity of life.
Spanish (i/ˈspænɪʃ/, español), also called Castilian (
i/kæˈstɪliən/,
castellano ), is a Romance language that originated in the Castile region of Spain and today has hundreds of millions of native-speakers across the world.
Spanish is a part of the Ibero-Romance group of languages, which evolved from several dialects of common Latin in Iberia after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century. It was first documented in central-northern Iberia in the 9th century and gradually spread with the expansion of the Kingdom of Castile into central and southern Iberia. Beginning in the early 16th century, Spanish was taken to the colonies of the Spanish Empire, most notably to the Americas, as well as territories in Africa, Oceania and the Philippines.
From its beginnings, Spanish vocabulary was influenced by its contact with Basque, as well as by neighboring Ibero-Romance languages, and later it absorbed many Arabic words during the Al-Andalus era in the Iberian Peninsula. It also adopted words from non-Iberian languages, particularly the Romance languages Occitan, French, Italian and Sardinian, as well as from Nahuatl and other Indigenous languages of the Americas.

Modern residential buildings dominate the townscape of Quito, the capital of Ecuador, that was founded in Spanish colonial times. Quito is the starting point for most journeys through this fascinating county that is situated on the Equator and which offers both cultural as well as many natural attractions and most especially, the Galapagos Islands. The journey to the fascinating animal kingdom of the Galapagops Islands begins in Baquerizo Moreno the largest settlement on the island which also has the largest fishing harbour of the entire archipelago. The rolling movement of the Poseidon, the expedition’s diving boat, provides a hint of the adventures that lie ahead. The remarkable biodiversity of the islands is also evident in the various species of birdlife that are to be found there. ...
Travel video about destination Galapagos. Intriguing and mysterious the islands of the Galapagos archipelago rise up from the Pacific Ocean. Around one thousand kilometres off the South American continent the extensive group of nineteen volcanic islands have an almost primeval appearance. These islands derived their name from the Spanish word for 'turtle'. For many centuries the giant turtles were considered to be a culinary delicacy and a total of fourteen sub-species of giant turtle inhabit the islands, some of which have been known to live for more than a hundred and fifty years. Even today ocean biologists and an assortment of other scientists follow in the footsteps of Charles Darwin and in the 1960's a research station on one of the islands was named in his honour. With the introduct...

More Galapagos on the blog: http://hopscotchtheglobe.com/visiting-the-galapagos-islands-what-you-should-know/ I was invited by Flight Centre to spend a week in the Galapagos as an "honorary flightie" on a G Adventure tour. The Galapagos Islands are some of the most magical places on earth, where man and wildlife live together in harmony in a way I've never seen before. While in the Galapagos, I swam with wild sea lions, walked alongside the largest tortoises, made friends with marine iguanas and watched the daily lives of pelicans and crabs. If you love wildlife and are a nature person, the Galapagos NEEDS to be on your bucket list.
