I Vow to Thee My Country - Gustav Holst (1874 - 1934) - arr. Geoff Knorr
I sometimes get into a patriotic mood, and I make no apology for that.
"I Vow to Thee, My Country" is a British patriotic song, created in 1921, when a poem by Sir Cecil Spring Rice was set to music by Gustav Holst. In 1921, Gustav Holst (1874 - 1934) adapted the music from a section of Jupiter from his suite The Planets (Op. 32 IV) to create a setting for the poem. The music was extended slight

"The Planets", Op. 32, is a seven-movement orchestral suite by the English composer Gustav Holst, written between 1914 and 1916. Each movement of the suite is named after a planet of the Solar System and its corresponding astrological character as defined by Holst. With the exception of Earth, which is not observed in astrological practice, all the planets are represented.
The idea of the work was suggested to Holst by Clifford Bax, who introduced him to astrology when the two were part of a small group of English artists holidaying in Majorca in the spring of 1913; Holst became quite a devotee of the subject, and liked to cast his friends' horoscopes for fun.
The suite has seven movements, each named after a planet and its corresponding astrological character:
1. Mars, the Bringer of War (00:00 - 07:21)
2. Venus, the Bringer of Peace (07:22 - 15:59);
3. Mercury, the Winged Messenger (16:00 - 19:51);
4. Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity (19:52 - 27:49);
5. Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age (27:50 - 36:31);
6. Uranus, the Magician (36:32 - 42:14)
7. Neptune, the Mystic (42:15 - 49:01).
Holst's original title (clearly seen on the handwritten full score) was "Seven Pieces for Large Orchestra". he orchestral premiere of The Planets suite, conducted at Holst's request by Adrian Boult, was held at short notice on 29 September 1918, during the last weeks of World War I, in the Queen's Hall with the financial support of Holst's friend and fellow composer Henry Balfour Gardiner. It was hastily rehearsed; the musicians of the Queen's Hall Orchestra first saw the complicated music only two hours before the performance, and the choir for "Neptune" was recruited from pupils from St Paul's Girls' School (where Holst taught). It was a comparatively intimate affair, attended by around 250 invited associates, but Holst regarded it as the public premiere, inscribing Boult's copy of the score, "This copy is the property of Adrian Boult who first caused the Planets to shine in public and thereby earned the gratitude of Gustav Holst."

This piece is the largest of the "Indian" works Holst composed between 1895 and 1914. It is based on the "Meghaduta," an epic poem by Kalidasa, the Indian poet. Holst once said that the translation of this poem took him seven years to complete, "seven happy years, of course." Holst didn't complete this translation alone though. There was a similar translation used by R. W. Frazier in his book, "Silent Gods and Sun Steeped Lands," of which Holst owned a copy.
The Cloud Messenger is about an exiled poet from Central India who sends a cloud toward the Himalaya Mountains to relay a message of love to his wife, who is lonely. There are great moments of dance laced throughout the piece, which serve to symbolize the cloud listening in on the dances in the temples of the holy city. In the end, the cloud delivers its message by speaking softly into the sleeping ear of the poet's wife.
The piece was first performed on 4 March 1913, with Holst conducting the London Choral Society and the New Symphony Orchestra. It received mixed reviews from the public. Vaughan Williams thought the piece was "beautiful," yet Holst's daughter, Imogen, does not speak highly of the piece. Holst himself thought it was the best piece he had written at the time and was extremely disappointed with it's failure. He fell into a deep depression after its premiere and was surprised when he received a gift from an anonymous person which enabled him to go on a vacation in Mallorica, with his friends, Clifford and Arnold Bax.

The Planets, suite for orchestra & female chorus, Op. 32, H. 125, written between 1914-1916.
00:00 - 1. Mars, the Bringer of War
08:11 - 2. Venus, the Bringer of Peace
15:38 - 3. Mercury, the Winged Messenger
19:26 - 4. Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity
27:25 - 5. Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age
35:49 - 6. Uranus, the Magician
42:15 - 7. Neptune, the Mystic
Vaughan Williams once described The Planets as "the perfect equilibrium" of the mystic and the melodic sides of the composer's nature. Shortly before its composition, Holst told a friend, "As a rule I only study things that suggest music to me...Recently the character of each planet suggested lots to me." Typically known as a miniaturist, Holst expanded his reputation when he wrote this work of symphonic proportions for an impossibly large orchestra. Containing seven tone poems, the composition, which is comparable in size to those by Strauss, Mahler, and Schoenberg, has become known as his biggest and most important work. Accustomed to composing only for special purposes, Holst luxuriously allowed himself everything he wanted in this work.
The Planets was composed while Holst was employed as music master at a school in Dulwich and at St. Paul's Girls' School. It was the first and only work of its kind that he produced; between 1900-1914 he had written mainly choral pieces. Under the influence of Wagner, Strauss, Rimsky-Korsakov, Stravinsky, the French composers, and additional Russians, Holst started to sketch No. 1: "Mars, The Bringer of War" just as the first World War began. Insistent on the stupidity of war, with all its horrors, the composer opened The Planets with this movement of relentless and brutal power. The entire work bears the feel of vulgarity, pleasantly accompanied by the richness and emotional warmth of humanity.
With the exception of Earth, each planet in our solar system has its own movement in Holst's composition:
- "Mars" opens the work in a broad ABA form, each section rising to a climax, concluding with a crashing unison of the entire orchestra.
- "Venus" follows, dissipating the brutality of the first movement, by peacefully presenting several figures and closing with a rich and calm amplification of its opening.
- "Mercury," which is in two keys in nearly every bar, leaves an impression of winged lightness and speed by rapidly swinging between chords.
- In "Jupiter" the composer sought to embody the radiant happiness of a person who enjoys life, in an ABACABA form.
- "Saturn" beautifully and peacefully brings old age, in a march that penetrates unlike any other work by the composer.
- Although Holst did not hear Dukas' Sorcerer's Apprentice prior to composing "Uranus," the two have remarkable similarities, particularly in the use of staccato bassoons. It is one of his supreme tuttis.
- This atmospheric composition closes with the delicately scored "Neptune." Meant to be a tuneless, expressionless, and shapeless pianissimo movement, the piece fades away to a close with a memorable wordless six-part female chorus.
The first complete public performance was conducted by Albert Coates on 15 November 1920. Prior to that, Adrian Boult led a semi-private rehearsal at the Queen's Hall Orchestra in 1918. The work is also available in an excellent version for two pianos.

The music was extended slightly to fit the final two lines of the first verse. At the request of the publisher Curwen, Holst made a version as a unison song with orchestra (Curwen also published Sir Hubert Parry's unison song with orchestra, "Jerusalem"). This was probably first performed in 1921 and became a common element at Armistice memorial ceremonies, especially after it was published as a hymn in 1926. Holst in 1926 harmonised the tune to make it usable as a hymn, which was included in the hymnal Songs of Praise. In that version the lyrics were unchanged, but the tune was then called "Thaxted" (named after the village where Holst lived for many years). The editor of the new (1926) edition of Songs of Praise was Holst's close friend Ralph Vaughan Williams, which may have provided the stimulus for Holst's cooperation in producing the hymn (courtesy of Wikipedia).
The origin of the lyric is a poem by British diplomat Cecil Spring Rice, which he wrote in 1908 while posted to the British Embassy in Stockholm. Then called Urbs Dei (The City of God) or The Two Fatherlands, the poem described how a Christian owes his loyalties to both his homeland and the heavenly kingdom.
I Vow to Thee My Country
I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above,
Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love;
The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test,
That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best;
The love that never falters, the love that pays the price,
The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.
I heard my country calling, away across the sea,
Across the waves and waters, she calls and calls to me.
Her sword is girded at her side, her helmet on her head,
And around her feet are lying the dying and the dead;
I hear the noise of battle, the thunder of her guns;
I haste to thee, my mother, a son among thy sons.
And there's another country, I've heard of long ago,
Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know;
We may not count her armies, we may not see her King;
Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;
And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase,
And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace.
I took these photos in London (Palace of Westminster; Hyde Park; Eros, Piccadilly; Horse Guards; Whitehall; St. Pancras Station (bronze statue of poet Sir John Betjeman)); Lincoln Cathedral; and in the Peak District National Park, Derbyshire, England.
Here, Holst's music has been arranged by Geoff Knorr and performed by the Prague FILMharmonic under the baton of conductor, Andy Brick.

Holst "Mars" ('The Planets') - Slatkin conducts
Gustav Holst's most popular work was played at the First Night of the 2004 Proms in London's Royal Albert Hall by the BBCSO. Leonard Slatkin was then in his final season as the orchestra's principal conductor, a post he had held since 2000. From that performance comes Holst's stark evocation of war in music that was written before the outbreak of World War I.

Prelude: Invocation to Pan / Preludio: Invocación a Pan (0:00)
I. Song and Bacchanal / Canto y Bacanal (2:55)
II. Ode on a Grecian Urn /Oda para una Urna Griega (12:58)
III. Scherzo: Fancy-Folly’s Song (25:54)
IV. Finale (31:26)
Gustav Holst’s First Choral Symphony is based upon poetry by Romantic John Keats. While the selected texts go from the most solemn to the most mundane, they are all based on Greco-Roman sensitivities and subjects, and Holst music sublimely corresponds to their ancient nature.

Gustav Theodore Holst (1874-1934 : England)
Ode to Death, Op.38, H144 (1919)
Holst’s ‘Ode to Death’ was composed in the summer of 1919.
The motivation behind the setting of
‘When lilacs last in the Door-yard Bloom’d’
was the futility & terrible waste of life in the First World War
Words: Walt Whitman (1819-1892) from Leaves of Grass,
‘When lilacs last in the Door-yard Bloom’d’
Come, lovely and soothing Death,
Undulate round the world, serenely arriving, arriving,
In the day, in the night, to all, to each,
Sooner or later, delicate Death.
Prais’d be the fathomless universe,
For life and joy, and for objects and knowledge curious:
And for love, sweet love – But praise! praise! praise!
For the sure-enwinding arms of cool-enfolding death.
Dark Mother, always gliding near, with soft feet,
Have none chanted for thee a chant of fullest welcome?
Then I chant it for thee - I glorify thee above all;
I bring thee a song that when thou must indeed come, come unfalteringly.
Approach, strong Deliveress!
When it is so – when thou hast taken them, I joyously sing
the dead,
Lost in the loving, floating ocean of thee,
Laved in the flood of thy bliss, O Death.
From me thee glad serenades,
Dances for thee I propose, saluting thee – adornments and feastings for thee;
And the sight of the open landscape, and the high-spread sky,
are fitting,
And life and the fields, and the huge and thoughtful night.
The night, in silence, under many a star;
The ocean shore, and the husky whispering wave, whose voice
I know;
And the soul turning to thee, O vast and well-veil’d Death,
And the body gratefully nestling close to thee.
Over the tree-tops I float thee a song!
Over the rising and sinking waves - over the myriad fields, and the
prairies wide;
Over the dense-pack’d cities all, and the teeming wharves and ways,
I float this carol with joy, with joy to thee, O Death!

WW1 poem by an unknown Soldier called
"The Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red"
The blood swept lands and seas of red,
Where angels dare to tread.
As God cried a tear of pain as the angels fell,
Again and again.
As the tears of mine fell to the ground
To sleep with the flowers of red
As any be dead
My children see and work through fields of my
Own with corn and wheat,
Blessed by love so far from pain of my resting
Fields so far from my love.
It be time to put my hand up and end this pain
Of living hell. to see the people around me
Fall someone angel as the mist falls around
And the rain so thick with black thunder I hear
Over the clouds, to sleep forever and kiss
The flower of my people gone before time
To sleep and cry no more
I put my hand up and see the land of red,
This is my time to go over,
I may not come back
So sleep, kiss the boys for me

Thank you for your excellent videos about the universe and space.
Gustav Theodore Holst was an English composer. He is most famous for his orchestral suite The Planets. Holst composed almost 200 works, including operas, ballets, choral hymns and songs.
The Planets, Op.
Dame Kiri Te Kanawa is a New Zealand soprano, one of the greatest sopranos of all time. With her lyric soprano voice, Te Kanawa comes in a repertoire ranging from the seventeenth century to the twentieth. It is particularly associated with the work of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Richard Strauss, Giuseppe Verdi, George Frideric Handel and Puccini.

Holst wrote the Brook Green Suite in 1933 for his students in the junior orchestra of the St.Paul's Girls' School in Brook Green, London. Holst desired to write a piece that was easy enough for his students to perform, but at a more mature level of writing than that available to them from other sources at the time. The first movement, entitled "Prelude", is based on the descending C Major scale. The "Air", which is an original melody, sounds very much like one of the many popular English folk songs of the time. The "Dance" is based upon a melody heard while traveling in Sicily.

Hello all. I have been a long time fan of the Assassin's Creed series, and the new cinematic trailer for AC Unity seems to be no exception to the incredible quality of cinematic trailers the other games have had. I liked the audio they had on the original AC Unity trailer, but I wanted to add some audio that seemed more grandiose, sound that enhanced the chaotic nature of revolution while also maintaining the grace of a master assassin. The well-known "Mars, The Bringer of War" by composer Gustav Holst seemed to be a great fit, and I personally think it melds the ruthlessness of revolution with the artistry of assassination in a pretty cool way.
Enjoy, fellow Assassins
