‘Thou wast not born for Death! immortal bird/ No hungry generations tread thee down.’
Keats’ ‘Ode to a Nightingale’ contains these curious lines. How can a bird be ‘immortal’? The poem is partly about immortality, but how does its complex poetic web work?

Byron, Keats and Shelley lived short lives, but the radical way they lived them would change the world. At 19, Shelley wrote The Necessity of Atheism - it was banned and burned, but it freed the Romantics from religion. Through their search for meaning in a world without God, they pioneered the notions of free love, celebrity and secular idolatry that are at the centre of modern Western culture.

John Keats is perhaps the most talented poet of the English Romantic Period. Although his life was cut short by disease at the age of 25, he produced some of the most famous poems in world literature. Less erudite and philosophical than Shelley and not so technically versatile as Byron, he displayed a sure poetic instinct and an amazing ability to appeal powerfully to the senses and to the emotions by the brilliance of his diction. Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,

aqueja mis sentidos...como si hubiera bebido cicuta...o apurado un espeso opiáceo con el que Leteo astutamente me hubiera adormecido. Nunca envidié tu suerte ni beldad, pero me contagié de tu alegría cuando cual dríada de árboles y ríos... en un rincón melodioso de verdes hayas, eternamente umbrío... con tu clara garganta cantaste al estío. Oh, deja que me embriague con el vino que sale de la tierra profunda... ése que a Flora sabe y huele a danza, a canción provenzal y a alegría fecunda. Deja que beba un sorbo de la vida con bullir de burbujas y ese licor rosado y verdadero muestre al mundo mi boca de púrpura teñida. Beber y, sin ser visto, abandonar el mundo... y perderme contigo en el fondo del bosque. Perderme en lo insondable y olvidar lo que sólo se atisba en lo profundo. Esta fatiga, esa destemplanza, donde los hombres escuchan sus gemidos ese temblor de unas postreras canas, cuando la juventud se ha escabullido. Y llega la tristeza cotidiana... y la desesperanza gana la partida. La belleza se esconde, avergonzada y el nuevo amor perece sin mañana. Mejor perderme lejos, volar a ti enlazado, olvidarme de Baco aunque éste venga, suspendernos en alas de la poesía, aunque la mente vacile y se detenga. Contigo estoy, la noche ya ha llegado. Tal vez entronizada esté la reina luna, teniendo alrededor un enjambre de hadas; pero aquí no hay más luz... que la que exhala el cielo con fortuna, por senderos cubiertos de ramas encorvadas. Yo no veo qué flores me rodean ni si el incienso asciende por las ramas, pero sí que presiento, desde aquí, que la estación hace crecer la hierva, los árboles silvestres, la retama, pastoril eglantina y blanco espino, violetas efímeras y humildes que el generoso mayo nos regala. Y la rosa azmilcleña hace morada para inquietos insectos en la tarde. Escucho entre las sombras y con frecuencia he estado enamorado a medias de la suave muerte. La he nombrado mil veces en versos susurrados para que fuera al aire mi aliento casi inerte. Más que nunca en mi vida morir parece dulce, agotarme sin pena a media noche... mientras el alma vuela por el éter en la visión extática del orbe. Seguiría tu canto y no te oiría. Pues tus notas son fúnebres y frías. Soy ave y no nací para la muerte, ni por calmar el hambre de gusanos. Pero la voz que oigo en este otoño la oyeron ya reyes y cortesanos. Tal vez el canto este sea el mismo que hizo llorar a Ruth, evocadora, mientras lanzaba al viento su añoranza. El mismo canto que reza la leyenda, entre espuma de olas su esperanza, y en el mar del olvido disipa la nostalgia. ¡Olvido! Esa palabra, cual campana, de ti me aleja hacia mi soledad. ¡Adiós! Tu ficción no me engaña, no mortificas mi alma con tu falsedad. ¡Adiós por siempre! Tu himno se evapora más allá de esos prados, del río por recodos, por encima del monte, y queda adormecido en los tristes calveros del valle que abandono. ¿Era un sueño tu canto o visión de beodo? La música ha volado ¿Sigo despierto? ¿Quizá estoy dormido?
La música es el tercer movimiento de la serenata número 10 de Mozart, cantada a capella.
Keats escribió este poema entre abril y mayo de 1818, bajo un ciruelo o una morera en el jardín de una casa en la Villa de Hampstead, casa que compartía con su amigo Charles Armitage Brown y con la familia Brawne. Keats se enamoró de la hija mayor de la familia Brawne, Fanny Brawne. Ambos vivieron un intenso romance pero no pudieron casarse. Tuvo que irse a vivir a Italia para recuperarse de su enfermedad. La tuberculosis se llevó a Keats con 25 años de edad, pobre y sintiéndose un fracasado como poeta.
La correspondencia que Keats mantuvo con Brawne inspira la película "Bright Star".

John Keats (
/ˈkiːts/; 31 October 1795 – 23 February 1821) was an English Romantic poet. He was one of the main figures of the second generation of romantic poets along with Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley, despite his work only having been in publication for four years before his death.
Although his poems were not generally well received by critics during his life, his reputation grew after his death, so that by the end of the 19th century he had become one of the most beloved of all English poets. He had a significant influence on a diverse range of later poets and writers. Jorge Luis Borges stated that his first encounter with Keats was the most significant literary experience of his life.
The poetry of Keats is characterized by sensual imagery, most notably in the series of odes. Today his poems and letters are some of the most popular and most analyzed in English literature.
John Keats was born on 31 October 1795 to Thomas and Frances Jennings Keats. Keats and his family seemed to have marked his birthday on 29 October, however baptism records give the birth date as the 31st. He was the eldest of four surviving children; George (1797–1841), Thomas (1799–1818) and Frances Mary "Fanny" (1803–1889). Another son was lost in infancy. John was born in central London although there is no clear evidence of the exact location. His father first worked as a hostler at the stables attached to the Swan and Hoop inn, an establishment he later managed and where the growing family lived for some years. Keats believed that he was born at the inn, a birthplace of humble origins, but there is no evidence to support this. The Keats at the Globe pub now occupies the site, a few yards from modern day Moorgate station. He was baptised at St Botolph-without-Bishopsgate and sent to a local dame school as a child.

Stephen John Fry (born 24 August 1957) is an English actor, screenwriter, author, playwright, journalist, poet, comedian, television presenter, film director, and a director of Norwich City Football Club.
After a troubled childhood and adolescence, during which he was expelled from a number of schools and eventually spent three months in prison for credit card fraud, he was able to secure a place at Queens' College, Cambridge, where he studied English Literature.
He first came to public attention in the 1981 Cambridge Footlights Revue presentation "The Cellar Tapes", which also included Hugh Laurie, Emma Thompson and Tony Slattery. With Hugh Laurie, as the comedy double act Fry and Laurie, he co-wrote and co-starred in A Bit of Fry & Laurie, and took the role of Jeeves (with Laurie playing Wooster) in Jeeves and Wooster.
As an actor, Fry played the lead in the film Wilde, was Melchett in the BBC television series Blackadder, starred as the title character Peter Kingdom in the ITV series Kingdom, has a recurring guest role as Dr. Gordon Wyatt on the Fox crime series Bones and appeared as rogue TV host Gordon Deitrich in the dystopian thriller V For Vendetta. He has also written and presented several documentary series including the 2008 television series Stephen Fry in America, which saw him travelling across all 50 US states. Since 2003 he has been the host of the quiz show QI.

Gime mi corazón, y un torpor somnoliento aqueja mis sentidos...como si hubiera bebido cicuta...o apurado un espeso opiáceo con el que Leteo astutamente me hubiera adormecido. Nunca envidié tu suerte ni beldad, pero me contagié de tu alegría cuando cual dríada de árboles y ríos... en un rincón melodioso de verdes hayas, eternamente umbrío... con tu clara garganta cantaste al estío. Oh, deja que me embriague con el vino que sale de la tierra profunda... ése que a Flora sabe y huele a danza, a canción provenzal y a alegría fecunda. Deja que beba un sorbo de la vida con bullir de burbujas y ese licor rosado y verdadero muestre al mundo mi boca de púrpura teñida. Beber y, sin ser visto, abandonar el mundo... y perderme contigo en el fondo del bosque. Perderme en lo insondable y olvidar lo que sólo se atisba en lo profundo. Esta fatiga, esa destemplanza, donde los hombres escuchan sus gemidos ese temblor de unas postreras canas, cuando la juventud se ha escabullido. Y llega la tristeza cotidiana... y la desesperanza gana la partida. La belleza se esconde, avergonzada y el nuevo amor perece sin mañana. Mejor perderme lejos, volar a ti enlazado, olvidarme de Baco aunque éste venga, suspendernos en alas de la poesía, aunque la mente vacile y se detenga. Contigo estoy, la noche ya ha llegado. Tal vez entronizada esté la reina luna, teniendo alrededor un enjambre de hadas; pero aquí no hay más luz... que la que exhala el cielo con fortuna, por senderos cubiertos de ramas encorvadas. Yo no veo qué flores me rodean ni si el incienso asciende por las ramas, pero sí que presiento, desde aquí, que la estación hace crecer la hierva, los árboles silvestres, la retama, pastoril eglantina y blanco espino, violetas efímeras y humildes que el generoso mayo nos regala. Y la rosa azmilcleña hace morada para inquietos insectos en la tarde. Escucho entre las sombras y con frecuencia he estado enamorado a medias de la suave muerte. La he nombrado mil veces en versos susurrados para que fuera al aire mi aliento casi inerte. Más que nunca en mi vida morir parece dulce, agotarme sin pena a media noche... mientras el alma vuela por el éter en la visión extática del orbe. Seguiría tu canto y no te oiría. Pues tus notas son fúnebres y frías. Soy ave y no nací para la muerte, ni por calmar el hambre de gusanos. Pero la voz que oigo en este otoño la oyeron ya reyes y cortesanos. Tal vez el canto este sea el mismo que hizo llorar a Ruth, evocadora, mientras lanzaba al viento su añoranza. El mismo canto que reza la leyenda, entre espuma de olas su esperanza, y en el mar del olvido disipa la nostalgia. ¡Olvido! Esa palabra, cual campana, de ti me aleja hacia mi soledad. ¡Adiós! Tu ficción no me engaña, no mortificas mi alma con tu falsedad. ¡Adiós por siempre! Tu himno se evapora más allá de esos prados, del río por recodos, por encima del monte, y queda adormecido en los tristes calveros del valle que abandono. ¿Era un sueño tu canto o visión de beodo? La música ha volado ¿Sigo despierto? ¿Quizá estoy dormido? La música es el tercer movimiento de la serenata número 10 de Mozart, cantada a capella. Keats escribió este poema entre abril y mayo de 1818, bajo un ciruelo o una morera en el jardín de una casa en la Villa de Hampstead, casa que compartía con su amigo Charles Armitage Brown y con la familia Brawne. Keats se enamoró de la hija mayor de la familia Brawne, Fanny Brawne. Ambos vivieron un intenso romance pero no pudieron casarse. Tuvo que irse a vivir a Italia para recuperarse de su enfermedad. La tuberculosis se llevó a Keats con 25 años de edad, pobre y sintiéndose un fracasado como poeta. La correspondencia que Keats mantuvo con Brawne inspira la película "Bright Star".

Through verdurous glooms and winding mossy ways.
I cannot see what flowers are at my feet,
Nor what soft incense hangs upon the boughs,
But, in embalmed darkness, guess each sweet
Wherewith the seasonable month endows
The grass, the thicket, and the fruit-tree wild;
White hawthorn, and the pastoral eglantine;
Fast fading violets cover'd up in leaves;
And mid-May's eldest child,
The coming musk-rose, full of dewy wine,
The murmurous haunt of flies on summer eves.
Darkling I listen; and, for many a time
I have been half in love with easeful Death,
Call'd him soft names in many a mused rhyme,
To take into the air my quiet breath;
Now more than ever seems it rich to die,
To cease upon the midnight with no pain,
While thou art pouring forth thy soul abroad
In such an ecstasy!
Still wouldst thou sing, and I have ears in vain --

Of perilous seas, in faery lands forlorn.
Forlorn! the very word is like a bell
To toll me back from thee to my sole self!
Adieu! the fancy cannot cheat so well
As she is fam'd to do, deceiving elf.
Adieu! adieu! thy plaintive anthem fades

Nunca envidié tu suerte ni beldad, pero me contagié de tu alegría cuando cual dríada de árboles y ríos... en un rincón melodioso de verdes hayas, eternamente umbrío... con tu clara garganta cantaste al estío. Oh, deja que me embriague con el vino que sale de la tierra profunda... ése que a Flora sabe y huele a danza, a canción provenzal y a alegría fecunda. Deja que beba un sorbo de la vida con bullir de burbujas y ese licor rosado y verdadero muestre al mundo mi boca de púrpura teñida. Keats escribió este poema entre abril y mayo de 1818, bajo un ciruelo o una morera en el jardín de una casa en la Villa de Hampstead, casa que compartía con su amigo Charles Armitage Brown y con la familia Brawne. Keats se enamoró de la hija mayor de la familia Brawne, Fanny Brawne. Ambos vivieron un intenso romance pero no pudieron casarse. Tuvo que irse a vivir a Italia para recuperarse de su enfermedad. La tuberculosis se llevó a Keats con 25 años de edad, pobre y sintiéndose un fracasado como poeta.

In Bright Star, Campions heroine is Fanny Brawne (the breathtaking Abbie Cornish), a smart, young dressmaker who will do anything if someone tries to break her relationship with the man she loves, the great romantic poet, John Keats (Ben Whishaw).
Inspired by the acclaimed biography of Keats written by Andrew Motion, Campion focuses on the love story between Brawne and Keats. Told through the eyes of the poets love and inspiration, their romance inspired some of the most beautiful love letters ever written. Their correspondence would later scandalize Victorian society.
Told during the last three years in the life of Keats, the unlikely pair started at odds. Keats thinks Brawne is a stylish minx, while she is wholly unimpressed by his literature. But love soon blossoms and inspires Keats to write some of his most brilliant works such as 'Ode on a Grecian Urn,' 'Ode on Melancholy' and 'Ode to a Nightingale.'
I have the feeling as if I were dissolving, Keats tells Brawne. Indeed, the young lovers are swept into powerful, uncontrollable sensations. Charles Armitage Brown (Paul Schneider affecting a believable Scottish accent), Keats friend and benefactor, tries to separate the lovers away. Perhaps due to jealousy or Brown is just overprotective of Keats. I commend Campion for not offering a clear answer.
Written by Campion herself, the films tone is like a ballad. The narrative is told in verses beginning with the couples involvement all the way to their problems. Yet, the director uses restraints in telling the story as if to mimic Brawnes own life limitations.
The greatest line in the film is told when Keats confronts Brown and says, There is a holiness to the hearts affections. Campion clearly understands the romantic impulse of the human heart. And it helps that her leading actors, Cornish and Whishaw, have incredible chemistry.
Bright Star is also visually splendid. Cinematographer Greig Fraser lovingly shot each frame to replicate the films romantic theme. Whether its Keats atop a tree or Brawne walking in a snow-filled night, you will be drawn into the powerful, hypnotic look of the movie.
If youre looking to know more about the life of Keats, the poet, you may be disappointed with Bright Star. But if you want to dig deeper into the mind of Keats, the lover, then you will enjoy the film. It celebrates the frailties of love and sorrow.
Bright Star reveals a great untold love story about one of literatures tragic figures. Its a romantic film told with an intriguing feminist angle. In the end, only death can separate Keats and Brawne, but their love lives on to this day.

From The Piano to In the Cut, writer-director Jane Campion always puts strong women characters at the center. Whether shes a mute woman like Holly Hunters Oscar-winning role in The Piano or Meg Ryans writing professor in In the Cut, Campions heroines are mostly disempowered women living outside mainstream society.
In Bright Star, Campions heroine is Fanny Brawne (the breathtaking Abbie Cornish), a smart, young dressmaker who will do anything if someone tries to break her relationship with the man she loves, the great romantic poet, John Keats (Ben Whishaw).
Inspired by the acclaimed biography of Keats written by Andrew Motion, Campion focuses on the love story between Brawne and Keats. Told through the eyes of the poets love and inspiration, their romance inspired some of the most beautiful love letters ever written. Their correspondence would later scandalize Victorian society.
Told during the last three years in the life of Keats, the unlikely pair started at odds. Keats thinks Brawne is a stylish minx, while she is wholly unimpressed by his literature. But love soon blossoms and inspires Keats to write some of his most brilliant works such as 'Ode on a Grecian Urn,' 'Ode on Melancholy' and 'Ode to a Nightingale.'
I have the feeling as if I were dissolving, Keats tells Brawne. Indeed, the young lovers are swept into powerful, uncontrollable sensations. Charles Armitage Brown (Paul Schneider affecting a believable Scottish accent), Keats friend and benefactor, tries to separate the lovers away. Perhaps due to jealousy or Brown is just overprotective of Keats. I commend Campion for not offering a clear answer.
Written by Campion herself, the films tone is like a ballad. The narrative is told in verses beginning with the couples involvement all the way to their problems. Yet, the director uses restraints in telling the story as if to mimic Brawnes own life limitations.
The greatest line in the film is told when Keats confronts Brown and says, There is a holiness to the hearts affections. Campion clearly understands the romantic impulse of the human heart. And it helps that her leading actors, Cornish and Whishaw, have incredible chemistry.
Bright Star is also visually splendid. Cinematographer Greig Fraser lovingly shot each frame to replicate the films romantic theme. Whether its Keats atop a tree or Brawne walking in a snow-filled night, you will be drawn into the powerful, hypnotic look of the movie.
If youre looking to know more about the life of Keats, the poet, you may be disappointed with Bright Star. But if you want to dig deeper into the mind of Keats, the lover, then you will enjoy the film. It celebrates the frailties of love and sorrow.
Bright Star reveals a great untold love story about one of literatures tragic figures. Its a romantic film told with an intriguing feminist angle. In the end, only death can separate Keats and Brawne, but their love lives on to this day.

John Keats (October 31, 1795 – February 23, 1821) was an English Romantic poet. He was one of the main figures of the second generation of romantic poets along with Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley, despite his work only having been in publication for four years before his death. The small school had a liberal outlook and a progressive curriculum more modern than the larger, more prestigious schools. In the family atmosphere at Clarke's, Keats developed an interest in classics and history, which would stay with him throughout his short life. The headmaster's son, Charles Cowden Clarke, also became an important mentor and friend, introducing Keats to Renaissance literature, including Tasso, Spenser, and Chapman's translations. The young Keats was described by his friend Edward Holmes as a volatile character, "always in extremes", given to indolence and fighting. However, at 13 he began focusing his energy on reading and study, winning his first academic prize in midsummer 1809.
In April 1804, when Keats was eight, his father died. The cause of death was a skull fracture, suffered when he fell from his horse while returning from a visit to Keats and his brother George at school. Thomas Keats died intestate. Frances remarried two months later, but left her new husband soon afterwards, and the four children went to live with their grandmother, Alice Jennings, in the village of Edmonton. In March 1810 when Keats was 14, his mother died of tuberculosis, leaving the children in the custody of their grandmother. She appointed two guardians, Richard Abbey and John Sandell to take care of them.
