The Apuan Alps (Italian: Alpi Apuane) are a mountain range in northern Tuscany, Italy, part of the Apennine Mountains. They are included between the valleys of the Serchio and Magra rivers, and, to north-west, the Garfagnana and Lunigiana. The name derives from that of the Apuani Ligures tribe who lived here in ancient times.
The chain formed in the middle Triassic period, somewhat earlier than the rest of the Apennines, and on a rather different geological structure, formed by a sea landscape. Karst topography is widespread, as well as the marble rocks (including the world famous Carrara marble) for which the area is renowned.
The highest peak is the Monte Pisanino (1,946 m).

The walk starts at the entrance to a quarry 3 km west down a rough track from the village of Ugliancaldo. The first part of the route involves passing through part of the quarry workings before entering a beech wood on a poorly defined track that traverses the steep slopes above to reach the start of the via ferrata. We were uncertain if the via ferrata was even open because of the on-going active quarrying and signs stating that admission to non-authorised persons was forbidden, so we asked directions from some quarry workers who pointed out the way. This fairly easy via ferrata ascends 400 metres up an arête of rock at 45 to 50 degrees (occasionally 70 degrees) to reach a col near to the summit of Monte Pizzo d'Uccello. From the top of the via ferrata a knife edge arête often only a met...

We decided to spend our time in the Apennine Mountains 2 kms away from the town of Barga in an olive farm surrounded of acacia and chestnut woods: Il Benefizio, managed by a local beekeper. From the farm I got up early in the morning and I recorded this video with a great perspective of Barga and the Apennine mountains surrounded by mist. I had the feeling of being in the movie "Lord of the Rings". Barga is an old hilltop village around 12 kms south of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, is one of those slow Tuscan hilltop towns, with a good looking Duomo (Cathedral).
We decided to spend our time in the Apennine Mountains 2 kms away from the town of Barga in an olive farm surrounded of acacia and chestnut woods. We walk to the small village of Sommocolonia where I can take this shot of Barga at dusk. Sommocolonia to the Romans meant "the colony at the summit," and this village of fewer than 50 residents currently was indeed founded by the Romans and today is nothing more than a few houses and a church. From its Church I am able to get this nice perspective of the beautiful Barga and the green Apennine mountains. Region of Tuscany (Toscana) is in the central part of the peninsula, on the shores of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The relief of the area quite diverse - the north-east and east of the low ridges stretch of the Apennines, Pratomagno and the Chianti area, in the north - ridges of the Ligurian and Apuan Alps, central areas occupied by hilly areas, and closer to the coast and the valley of the Arno River begins a narrow strip of plains. Tuscany - one of the most beautiful regions of Italy, a place of unique historical richness, the birthplace of many areas of Italian schools of painting and architecture. This is an amazing place of formation of ancient Apennine culture, the Etruscan civilization, the Roman Empire and the state of the Lombards, and the birthplace of the Renaissance. The backdrop is the Apuan Alps. The Apuan Alps (whose white marble was hewn for Michelangelo) serve as a backdrop to the town of Lunigiana, whose rolling landscape is sprinkled with medieval castles, fortified towns, and hill villages set high above twisting valley roads. Clips by Dion Music by Vivaldi Pietrasanta is a town and comune on the coast of northern Tuscany in Italy, in the province of Lucca. Pietrasanta is part of Versilia, on the last foothills of the Apuan Alps, about 32 km north of Pisa. The town is located 3 km off the coast (where the frazione of Marina di Pietrasanta is located). The town has Roman origins and part of the Roman wall still exists. The medieval town was founded in 1255 upon the preexisting "Rocca di Sala" fortress of the Lombards by Luca Guiscardo da Pietrasanta, from whom it got its name. Pietrasanta was at its height a part of the Republic of Genoa (1316--1328). The town is first mentioned in 1331 in records of Genoa, when it became a part of the Lucca along with the river port of Motrone, and was held until 1430. ...

100 million years ago a collision between the African and European tectonic plates began. It created the stunning Alpine mountain chain and tectonic forces continue to influence earthquakes and volcanic activity in Italy today. Biography Being half-Italian, Lidia has a life-long interest in Italian culture, food, scenery and geology. Her PhD research was on the tectonics of southern Spain and the western Mediterranean and the geological evolution of Italy and surrounding seas inspired some of her research. Since then she has maintained an active interest in Italian geology, leading undergraduate st...
