Manchester City manager
Manuel Pellegrini is determined to strengthen his side's prospects of a top-three finish, even though they will be without
David Silva and
Yaya Toure, when they travel to
Southampton on Sunday.
City head to the south coast just three days before travelling to
Real Madrid for the second leg of the
UEFA Champions League semi-final, but the
Chilean, whose side are level on 64 points with
Arsenal,
is fully focused on achieving the highest possible finish in the
Barclays Premier League.
That task has been made more difficult by the absence of
Silva and Toure and the threat posed by Southampton, who are themselves chasing
UEFA Europa League qualification.
"The best way to play well on Wednesday is to play well and win on Sunday," said Pellegrini. "Southampton are a team that in the last three years are doing very well; they have very good players.
"They sold a lot of players this season and it's a merit to
Ronald Koeman that they are doing so well."
Other than the absences of Silva and Toure, Pellegrini revealed the rest of the squad is available.
"
David has a small hamstring injury so he will not be fit for this week," he said. "He needs two or three weeks to recover.
Yaya starts working today (Friday). We’ll see the way he improves through the weekend, we’ll see if he's fit on Wednesday.
"
Samir worked this week without a problem; he will be in the squad list for Sunday. Raheem is just coming back from an important muscle injury which is why he’s playing just some minutes. If we have the best of him for the next four or five games, we'll be happy.”
Due to their
Champions League exploits, Pellegrini is expected to make changes against the
Saints.
"I said before we knew we were going to play eight games in
30 days, which is a lot for this squad so I'm making rotations in every game we play," added the 62-year-old. "We have two different competitions: one is the
Premier League where we want to be as near to the top of the table as we can, and the other is to try and reach that final."
Southampton are locked in a battle for the final
Europa League place with three matches to go, although rivals
West Ham and
Liverpool have a match in hand and come into the tie with six wins in their last eight at home.
Man City's visit is the first of two matches at
St Mary's Stadium before the end of the campaign, and Koeman, who has a fully fit squad, is keen to use home advantage to secure continental qualification.
"If we finish in a good way against
Crystal Palace on the final day, then I can be proud about my second season," he said. "To be in
Europe would be great for Southampton.
"We had
a good season, some good points, but maybe we lost too many points away from home.
"We still have some big games to play, the first this Sunday against Manchester City and that's good. So that we are still strong and show the belief and the spirit to finish this season in a good way."
City won November's reverse fixture 3-1.
