The Chad Basin is the largest endorheic drainage basin in Africa, centered on Lake Chad. It has no outlet to the sea and contains large areas of desert or semi-arid savanna. The drainage basin is roughly coterminous with the sedimentary basin of the same name, but extends further to the northeast and east. The basin spans seven countries, including most of Chad and a large part of Niger. It has an ethnically diverse population of about 30 million people as of 2011, growing rapidly. A combination of dams, increased irrigation, and reduced rainfall are causing shortages of water. Lake Chad continues to shrink.
The geological basin, which is smaller than the drainage basin, is a Phanerozoic sedimentary basin formed during the plate divergence that opened the South Atlantic ocean. The basin lies between the West African Craton and Congo Craton, and formed around the same time as the Benue Trough. It covers an area of about 2,335,000 square kilometres (902,000 sq mi). It merges into the Iullemmeden Basin to the west at the Damergou gap between the Aïr and Zinder massifs. The floor of the basin is made of Precambrian bedrock covered by more than 3,600 metres (11,800 ft) of sedimentary deposits.

Chad (i/tʃæd/; Arabic: تشاد Tshād; French: Tchad), officially the Republic of Chad (Arabic: جمهورية تشاد Jumhūrīyat Tshād; French: République du Tchad), is a landlocked country in Central Africa. It is bordered by Libya to the north, Sudan to the east, the Central African Republic to the south, Cameroon and Nigeria to the southwest and Niger to the west. It is the fifth largest country in Africa in terms of area.
Chad has several regions: a desert zone in the north, an arid Sahelian belt in the centre and a more fertile Sudanian Savanna zone in the south. Lake Chad, after which the country is named, is the largest wetland in Chad and the second-largest in Africa. N'Djamena, the capital, is the largest city. Chad is home to over 200 different ethnic and linguistic groups. Arabic and French are the official languages. Islam and Christianity are the most widely practiced religions.
Beginning in the 7th millennium BC, human populations moved into the Chadian basin in great numbers. By the end of the 1st millennium BC, a series of states and empires rose and fell in Chad's Sahelian strip, each focused on controlling the trans-Saharan trade routes that passed through the region. France conquered the territory by 1920 and incorporated it as part of French Equatorial Africa. In 1960, Chad obtained independence under the leadership of François Tombalbaye. Resentment towards his policies in the Muslim north culminated in the eruption of a long-lasting civil war in 1965. In 1979, the rebels conquered the capital and put an end to the south's hegemony. However, the rebel commanders fought amongst themselves until Hissène Habré defeated his rivals. He was overthrown in 1990 by his general Idriss Déby. Since 2003, the Darfur crisis in Sudan has spilt over the border and destabilised the nation, with hundreds of thousands of Sudanese refugees living in and around camps in eastern Chad.
A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of 'wild nature' for posterity and as a symbol of national pride. An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on Protected Areas, has defined "National Park" as its Category II type of protected areas.
While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first "public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people", Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a "national park" in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. The first area to use "national park" in its creation legislation was the US's Mackinac Island, in 1875. Australia's Royal National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result, Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.

News@10: Buhari Seeks International Intervention In Lake Chad Basin 23/09/16 Pt.1
Chadian troops have returned home from fighting Boko Haram in neighbouring Cameroon. But the battle against the armed group is far from over. Aid agencies warn people are being forced out of their homes in the Lake Chad basin. Al Jazeera's Osama Bin Javaid reports.
The UN aid chief says Lake Chad Basin is the world's most neglected humanitarian crisis. Speaking at the World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul, Stephen O'Brien drew attention to unprecedented humanitarian needs caused by poverty, climate change and terror in the West African region. The United Nations says Boko Haram-linked terror has displaced nearly two and a half million people in Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon and Chad. It is warning that over 480-thousand children in the region die if they don’t immediately receive food aid. Meanwhile, the Red Cross has said the gap between the suffering and the humanitarian response in Chad Lake Basin may be bigger than that in Syria, Iraq or Yemen. Oil Prospecting To Resume In Chad Basin
The United Nations is warning of a humanitarian catastrophe in Africa's Lake Chad Basin, bordered by Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon and Niger. According to a UN fact-finding team, 100 children in the region are dying every day from hunger, while millions have been forced from their homes. As Richard Bestic reports, the UN is calling for more than half a billion dollars to help fight the crisis

Shelton References:https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Eodg0k0olH4fdFWulQGliGVTEm27WonuuCpfUBIdRos/edit?usp=sharing Abstract: Lake Chad is a vital water resource in Africa, shared by five countries and thirty million people who depend on the food and water resources the lake provides. However, the lake is shrinking rapidly due to a combination of natural rainfall variability, unsustainable human water use, and the negative impacts of climate change due to historical greenhouse gas emissions. The main purpose of this video is to identify the global environmental injustices associated with the shrinking of Lake Chad, including the inadequate distributive and procedural justice structures plaguing the region. A prominent issue is that the region is experiencing climate change ...

Credit: Aliadoumadji Rimadoum (Chad) Review: Aliadoumadji Rimadoum and Abdel Rahman El Gamal (Founder of the website) Lake Chad basin is one of the most important agricultural heritage sites in the world. The lake is shared between Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria whereas each country often has different fishing methods, laws, and conservation/production techniques. Lake Chad provides a lifeline to nearly 30 million people in the four countries. About 90% of the lake’s water comes from the Chari River. The shrinkage of Lake Chad is the most striking fact. The lake is the remnant of a much larger inland lake, about 400.000 km2 at its largest around the year 4000 BC. Records show that in 1832, Lake Chad was one of the largest lakes in the world. In the 1960s, the lake covered 26.000 km2, ...

Saunders Co-Founder, The Tsavo Trust Director, The African Environmental Film Foundation What Was Covered: • Ivory consumer states of the Far East, primarily China and Vietnam, have refused to ban the sale of ivory domestically, and in the African countries that still sustain elephant populations, law enforcement is critical to protecting the remaining wildlife on the ground. • Since Al Shabaab was forced out of strategic centers - Mogadishu in August 2011 and Kismayo in September 2012 -- which held the key to their cash flows from port taxes and charcoal trade with the Middle East, the group has been desperately seeking new funding avenues. Ivory represents a lucrative and convenient source of revenue, whose value on the streets of Beijing has increased ...
