Donald Trump and Saudi Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal have gotten into a Twitter war after Trump posted an image of Fox News personality Megyn Kelly photoshopped into a picture of bin Talal and his sister. Trump’s tweet accused Fox News of being co-owned by Prince Al-Waleed. Within hours, bin Talal pointed out that the photo was fake and that he had previously saved Trump from bankruptcy. Though the tweet was most likely aimed at Fox News, it has now thrown Trump into another Twitter war. It has also thrust Trump’s past relationship with bin Talal into the media spotlight. Saudi Arabia is in the hands of young prince Mohammed bin Salman, who has ordered the bombing of Yemen’s people and infrastructure, a massacre that has lasted nearly an entire year. With the sudden execution of senior Shia scholar Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, tension in Riyadh-Tehran relations is escalating. At the end of 2015, German intelligence agency BND published a remarkable one-and-a-half-page memo saying that Saudi Arabia had adopted “an impulsive policy of intervention.” It portrayed Saudi Defense Minister and Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman – the powerful 29-year-old favorite son of the ageing King Salman, who is suffering from dementia – as a political gambler who is destabilizing the Arab world through proxy wars in Yemen and Syria.
