Evan Welling Thomas III (born April 25, 1951) is an American journalist and author. He is the author of nine books, including two New York Times bestsellers.
Thomas was born in Huntington, New York, and was raised in Cold Spring Harbor, New York. A graduate of Phillips Academy, Harvard University, and the University of Virginia School of Law, from 1991 he was a reporter, writer, and editor at Newsweek for 24 years. Prior to that, he was at Time. Thomas began his reporting career at The Bergen Record in New Jersey. He won numerous journalism awards, including a National Magazine Award in 1998.
Thomas was, for 20 years, a regular panelist on the weekly public affairs TV show Inside Washington until the show ceased production in December 2013.
He taught writing and journalism at Harvard and Princeton between 2003 and 2014. For seven years, from 2007 to 2014, he was the Ferris Professor of Journalism in residence at Princeton.
He is the son of Anna Davis (née Robins) and Evan Welling Thomas II, an editor who worked for HarperCollins and W. W. Norton & Company. His grandfather, Norman Thomas, was a six-time Presidential candidate for the Socialist Party of America.
Conan Christopher O'Brien (born April 18, 1963) is an American television host, comedian, writer, producer, musician, and voice actor. He is best known for hosting several late-night talk shows; since 2010 he has hosted Conan on the cable channel TBS. O'Brien was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, and was raised in an Irish Catholic family. He served as president of The Harvard Lampoon while attending Harvard University, and was a writer for the sketch comedy series Not Necessarily the News.
After writing for several comedy shows in Los Angeles, he joined the writing staff of Saturday Night Live. O'Brien was a writer and producer for The Simpsons for two seasons until he was commissioned by NBC to take over David Letterman's position as host of Late Night in 1993. A virtual unknown to the public, O'Brien's initial time on Late Night tenure received unfavorable reviews and remained on a multiweek renewal cycle during its early years. The show generally improved over time and was highly regarded by the time of his departure in 2009. Afterwards, O'Brien relocated from New York to Los Angeles to host his own incarnation of The Tonight Show for seven months until network politics prompted a host change in 2010.
Larry King (born Lawrence Harvey Zeiger, November 19, 1933) is an American television and radio host, actor, voice actor and comedian whose work has been recognized with awards including two Peabodys and 10 Cable ACE Awards.
He began as a local Florida journalist and radio interviewer in the 1950s and 1960s and became prominent as an all-night national radio broadcaster starting in 1978. From 1985 to 2010, he hosted the nightly interview television program Larry King Live on CNN. He currently hosts Larry King Now on Hulu and RT America during the week, and on Thursdays he hosts Politicking with Larry King, a weekly political talk show which airs in the evening on the same two channels.
King was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Jennie (Gitlitz), a garment worker who was born in Vilnius, Lithuania, and Aaron Zeiger, a restaurant owner and defense-plant worker who was born in Kolomyia, Ukraine. Both parents were Orthodox Jews.
King was educated at Lafayette High School, a public high school in the Brooklyn area of New York City. His father died at 44 of a heart attack and his mother had to go on welfare to support her two sons. King was greatly affected by his father's death, and he lost interest in school. After graduating from high school, he worked to help support his mother and did not go to college or university. From an early age, however, he had wanted to go into radio.

Our guest is Evan Thomas, author of "Ike's Bluff: President Eisenhower's Secret Battle to Save the World." The newly released historical narrative details President Eisenhower's eight year term in office from 1953-1961. Thomas suggests that Eisenhower used the threat of nuclear war to prevent open conflict with the Soviet Union while never fully revealing just how far he was willing to go in deploying the weapons.
The New York Times bestselling author of Ike’s Bluff and Sea of Thunder brings new life to America's 37th President with his book, "Being Nixon: A Man Divided." Dispensing with the myths to achieve an intimate and evenhanded look at the man himself, Evan Thomas delivers the best single-volume biography of Nixon to date, a radically different portrait of a complicated figure. Evan Thomas is one of the most respected historians and journalists writing today. He is the bestselling author of six works of nonfiction and the former editor at large of Newsweek, where he served as the magazine's lead writer on major news events and the author of more than a hundred cover stories.

The Alma and Joseph Gildenhorn Book Series features Evan Thomas, New York Times bestselling author, discussing his new book "Being Nixon: A Man Divided." This conversation was recorded at the Aspen Institute in Washington, DC on Tuesday, September 29, 2015. About "Being Nixon": In "Being Nixon," Evan Thomas peels away the layers of the complex, confounding figure who became America's 37th president. The son of devout Quakers, Richard Nixon (not unlike his rival John F. Kennedy) grew up in the shadow of an older, favored brother and thrived on conflict and opposition. Through high school and college, in the navy and in politics, he was constantly leading crusades and fighting off enemies real and imagined. As maudlin as he was Machiavellian, Nixon possessed the plainspoken eloquence to re...

From the early years of the republic to the 21st century--from Parson Weems to Doris Kearns Goodwin--presidential historians and biographers have created lasting impressions of the individuals who have held the nation's highest office, their scholarship informing and influencing generations of readers. Some books about presidents prove so central to our interpretation of American history they become history in their own right. But shaping the world's understanding of such powerful and influential figures comes with special responsibility, as political winds and sympathies shift over time, records are declassified, and new information from historical witnesses comes to light. In this panel, Presidential historians Timothy Naftali and Evan Thomas explored the dynamics of how declassification...
