Project History & More Info: I've wanted to build a PVC water pump for awhile, but the check valves were around $10.00 each. That seemed a little steep for a PVC build, so I made my own, which you can see in a different project. I was inspired on the pump piston and chamber by a picture I saw on a google image search by someone who used the 1-1/4" and 1" sizes of tubes, and he mentioned he cut the grooves for the O-rings on a table saw. That was a new idea to me and gave me the inspiration to put this together. I'm also planning to use this piston design in future projects that require pneumatic and hydraulic pistons. In my testing, the valves work great with air and water. I didn't have any gauges to test the strength of the vacuum so can't say how strong the vacuum would be, but it certainly does create one. While there are some special tools used to create this pump (table saw and forester bit), I believe with a little creativity the pump could be made just as effectively without them, making this a simple and duplicatable design.

I made a cord drill and then upgraded it to a pump drill. A cord drill is basically a spindle with a fly wheel attached so it looks like a spinning top. the middle of a piece of cord is then put into a notch at the top of the spindle. The ends of the cord are then wrapped around the spindle and then pulled quickly outwards causing the drill to spin. The momentum of the fly wheel causes the cord to wrap back around the spindle in the other direction. When it stops the cords are pulled outwards again and the drill spins in the other direction. I made the first one with a stone flywheel then made fire with it in the same way I make fire with fire sticks. Then I made and fired some clay fly wheels, made another drill with one of the fly wheels and fitted a stone drill bit to the end. This one I use for drilling holes in wood. I used the new drill to make a hole in a piece of wood. I then put the spindle of the original cord drill through the hole in the wood, tied the ends of the cord onto the piece of wood and it became a pump drill. The cords were wrapped round the spindle as normal but now a pumping action of the wooden cross bar created the same action. This was an interesting project. For fire making I'd stick to fire sticks because the equipment is easier to make. But for people with soft hands they could use the cord drill as it won't give them blisters. It should be added that the pump drill actually took longer than the cord drill (cord: 32 seconds, pump 1 min 30 seconds -the pump drill scene was edited down to make it watchable). The pump drill had more moving parts and was constantly having problems. As a fire making method I'd choose the cord drill over the pump drill unless all the parts were well made. The main purpose I'd use these tool for is drilling holes rather than fire making. It was reasonably good but the stone bits I made could be improved and their attachment to the shaft also needs some thought. If the bit loosens and gets off axis slightly the whole thing wobbles. These drills are impressive inventions and show potential for carpentry use later on.

They are extremely simple, with just two moving parts. The basic idea behind a ram pump is simple. The pump uses the momentum of a relatively large amount of moving water to pump a relatively small amount of water uphill. To use a ram pump, you must have a source of water situated above the pump. For example, you must have a pond on a hillside so that you can locate the pump below the pond. You run a pipe from the pond to the pump. The pump has a valve that allows water to flow through this pipe and build up speed. Once the water reaches its maximum speed, this valve slams shut. As it slams shut, the flowing water develops a great deal of pressure in the pump because of its inertia. The pressure forces open a second valve. High-pressure water flows through the second valve to the delivery pipe (which usually has an air chamber to allow the delivery pipe to capture as much high-pressure water as possible during the impulse). The pressure in the pump falls. The first valve re-opens to allow water to flow and build up momentum again. The second valve closes. The cycle repeats. The delivery pipe can rise some distance above both the pump and the source of the water. For example, if the pump is 10 feet below the pond, the delivery pipe might be up to 100 feet above the pump. You can see that the one big disadvantage of a ram pump is that it wastes a lot of water. Typically, only about 10% of the water it consumes actually makes it up the delivery pipe. The rest flows out of the pump as the water builds momentum. There is nothing magical happening in a ram pump. A different design that accomplishes the same thing might work like this: Water flows downhill from the pond and drives a water wheel. The water wheel is connected to a conventional shaft-drive pump (a reciprocating pump, a centrifugal pump, etc.) The pump moves water uphill. This design has more moving parts, but it accomplishes the same thing and has the advantage that it scales to any size very easily. The idea of using the energy of flowing water has been around for a long time!

Sometimes the pipe ID varies between manufacturers and even between production lots, so you have to be careful. I've made several versions of the pump, and usually I have to spend a lot of time browsing the hardware stores to find parts that might work. So far I've always been able to build a working pump and show others how to do it, too. I hope you'll be able to do the same. [Safety note: please take care when heating PVC since it can give off toxic fumes. Have good ventilation, take measures to ensure you don't breathe the fumes. Don't burn the plastic, just heat it gently and only until it's soft enough to form. You can use boiling hot water or a heat gun to soften it also. Use common sense and stay safe.] I believe the piston valve made from a bicycle inner tube stretched over a perforated pipe is unique - I've not seen this used anywhere else. The main advantage is that it allows a lot of water to pass through it in spite of the small pipe diameter. It's also lasts for a very long time. Note that everything that goes into the water won't corrode - rubber, copper, plastic, stainless steel. This pump can easily last for many years of use because of that. The only parts that wear out are easily replaced using off-the-shelf or scrounged materials. The thumbnail photo is of a pump I installed in Bolivia in 2003. Notice the 2-liter bottle used as a sliding funnel to fill water jugs without spilling. During a subsequent drought the whole community got their water from this well since it was the only one that hadn't dried up. By the way, the little soda can stove in the video works great, and is based on the work of YouTubers 'Littlebitworks' and 'Tetkoba'. Look for "Groove Stove". It's made from one soda can in about 5 minutes, blossoms in about 3 seconds, and can cook for about 15-20 minutes. Why use a manual breast pump? A big advantage of manual pumps is their simplicity and convenient size. If you are going to pump regularly, you may prefer an electric pump. But many mums say manual pumps feel natural and more closely mimic your baby's sucking. Comfort is a top priority for expressing mums. Using a breast pump shouldn't hurt you, but some women can find the suction uncomfortable. With a manual pump, you are generally better able to control the suction rate yourself. Once you've placed the suction cup over your breast, you squeeze the handle to create a rhythmic vacuum that stimulates milk flow. At first, you may need both hands to work the pump, although you'll probably soon get used to one-handed pumping. Hand pumps are generally more affordable, smaller, lighter, and quieter than electric pumps. They are generally quicker, too. Once you've become skilled at pumping, you may like to pump one breast while your baby is feeding at the other. With a manual pump, there won't be any motor noise to disturb him. Choosing a manual breast pump is a good low-cost option if you're only expressing milk every now and then, or when you're away from home. If, however, you want to feed your baby solely with expressed milk, spending more on a powerful, electric pump could make expressing quicker and easier.

(Mark Foster) "Pumped Up Kicks' is about a kid that basically is losing his mind and is plotting revenge. He's an outcast. I feel like the youth in our culture are becoming more and more isolated. It's kind of an epidemic. Instead of writing about victims and some tragedy, I wanted to get into the killer's mind, like Truman Capote did in In Cold Blood. I love to write about characters. That's my style.
