Lake Biwa (Japanese: 琵琶湖, Hepburn: Biwa-ko) is the largest freshwater lake in Japan, located in Shiga Prefecture (west-central Honshu), northeast of the former capital city of Kyoto Because of its proximity to the ancient capital, references to Lake Biwa appear frequently in Japanese literature, particularly in poetry and in historical accounts of battles.
The name Biwako was established in the Edo Period. There are various theories about the origin of the name Biwako, but it is generally believed to be so named because of the resemblance of its shape to that of a stringed instrument called the biwa. Kōsō, a learned monk of Enryaku-ji in the 14th century, gave a clue to the origin of the name Biwako in his writing: "The lake is the Pure land of the goddess Benzaiten because she lives on Chikubu Island and the shape of the lake is similar to that of the biwa, her favorite instrument."
The lake was formerly known as the Awaumi (淡海?, Freshwater Sea) or the Chikatsu Awaumi (近淡海?, Freshwater Sea Near the Capital) . Later the pronunciation Awaumi changed to the modern Ōmi as in the name of Ōmi Province. The lake is also called Nio no Umi (鳰の海?, "Little Grebe Lake") in literature.
A lake is an area of variable size filled with water, localized in a basin, that is surrounded by land, apart from any river or other outlet that serves to feed or drain the lake. Lakes lie on land and are not part of the ocean (except for sea lochs in Scotland and Ireland), and therefore are distinct from lagoons, and are also larger and deeper than ponds, though there are no official or scientific definitions. Lakes can be contrasted with rivers or streams, which are usually flowing. However most lakes are fed and drained by rivers and streams.
Natural lakes are generally found in mountainous areas, rift zones, and areas with ongoing glaciation. Other lakes are found in endorheic basins or along the courses of mature rivers. In some parts of the world there are many lakes because of chaotic drainage patterns left over from the last Ice Age. All lakes are temporary over geologic time scales, as they will slowly fill in with sediments or spill out of the basin containing them.
Many lakes are artificial and are constructed for industrial or agricultural use, for hydro-electric power generation or domestic water supply, or for aesthetic or recreational purposes.
Shiga Prefecture (滋賀県, Shiga-ken) is a prefecture of Japan, which forms part of the Kansai region in the western part of Honshu island. It encircles Lake Biwa, the largest freshwater lake in Japan. The capital is Ōtsu.
Shiga was known as Ōmi Province or Gōshū before the prefectural system was established. Omi was a neighbor of Nara and Kyoto, at the junction of western and eastern Japan. During the period 667 to 672, Emperor Tenji founded a palace in Otsu. In 742, Emperor Shōmu founded a palace in Shigaraki. In the early Heian Period, Saichō was born in the north of Otsu and founded Enryaku-ji, the center of Tendai and one a UNESCO World Heritage Site and monument of Ancient Kyoto now.
In the Medieval Period, the Sasaki clan ruled Omi, and afterward the Rokkaku clan, Kyōgoku clan and Azai clans ruled Omi. In the 1570s, Oda Nobunaga subjugated Omi and built Azuchi Castle on the eastern shores of Lake Biwa in 1579. Tōdō Takatora, Gamō Ujisato, Oichi, Yodo-dono, Ohatsu and Oeyo were Omi notables in the Sengoku Period. In those times, Ninja were active in Kōka (See also Kōga-ryū).

Our train journey takes you to Lake Biwa, Japan's biggest lake. We board trains cherished by the locals and sample fool they recommend. The Gachakon Train on the Omi Railway Main Line gets its name from the noisy "gacha" sound it makes during its journey. We also ride a special summer train that operates as a beer hall on wheels and climb aboard the SL Kita-Biwako that travels the JR Hokuriku Main Line at certain times of the year.
Lake Biwa is a naturally formed freshwater lake in Japan and it is located in Shiga Prefecture. It is the main source of fresh water and other nourishments for most residents of the Kansai Region. It is considered as one of the oldest lakes in the world and has been mentioned in the ancient Japanese literature. One of the cruise boats on Lake Biwa is named "Michigan" to celebrate the fact the city of Otsu has close ties with State of Michigan (Lansing in Michigan is considered as a sister state of Otsu).

Biwa-ko is the largest lake in Japan. Due to the close location to Kyoto, the capital city for a millennium, the lake and the surrounding areas can offer us a full of historical dramas with the samurai-warriors and the holy places including Chikubujima island. Three well-known castles are covered in this trip, Hikone, Gifu and Inuyama, two of them are the National Treasure of Japan.

I went on ANOTHER business trip this week, this time to Kyoto. I had some time after work to play around in the city. I went to Kyoto station, Lake Biwa, two temples, and a vegan pub. I saw some gorgeous autumn leaves and flew back home to Kagoshima with a view of a beautiful sunset.

(lyrics + music: LUCCO B.)
1) Komme ins Oderbruch an den Oderdeich
oder fehlt dir der Mut?
Mit Sand und Schippe kämpften wir alle
gemeinsam gegen die Flut
Chorus:
Im Oderbruch liegt in sandiger Mark
eine Oase, ein riesiger Park.
Im Oderbruch, da ist Landschaft pur,
am Ufer der Oder regiert die Natur
2) Nebel steigt langsam über die Felder
über den Deichen ist Ruh
Wir sitzen zusammen, geniessen die Nächte,
der Nebel deckt uns zu
(Chorus)
3) Märkisches Leben, märkische Lande
lohnen jeden Besuch
Die Mark Brandenburg gibt sich die Ehre
lädt ein ins Oderbruch
(Chorus)
