Sammy Nestico (born Samuel Louis Nistico, February 6, 1924 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is a composer and arranger of big band music. Nestico is best known for his arrangements for the Count Basie orchestra.
He has been a professional music arranger since 1941, when he became a staff arranger for ABC radio station WCAE in Pittsburgh at age 17. During his career, he arranged music for the Count Basie Orchestra (1967–1984), the US Air Force Band (15 yrs) and the US Marine Band (5 years) both in Washington, DC. In addition, he played the trombone in the big bands of Tommy Dorsey, Woody Herman, Gene Krupa, and Charlie Barnet.
In 1998-1999 Nestico was a professor at the University of Georgia, teaching commercial orchestration and conducting the Studio Orchestra. He also directed music programs at Los Angeles Pierce College, Woodland Hills, CA, Westinghouse Memorial High School, and Wilmerding, PA.
During his long career in the television and film industry, he has arranged and conducted projects for artists such as Bing Crosby, Sarah Vaughan, Toni Tennille, Frank Sinatra, Phil Collins, Barbra Streisand, and Count Basie, among others. As orchestrator, he has worked on nearly seventy television programs, including Mission: Impossible, Mannix, Charlie's Angels, and The Mod Squad.
A big band is a type of musical ensemble associated with playing jazz music and which became popular during the Swing Era from the early 1930s until the late 1940s. Big Bands evolved with the times and continue to today. A big band typically consists of approximately 12 to 25 musicians and contains saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and a rhythm section. The terms jazz band, jazz ensemble, stage band, jazz orchestra, and dance band are also used to refer to this type of ensemble. This does not, however, mean that each one of these names is technically correct for naming a 'big band" specifically.
In contrast to smaller jazz combos, in which most of the music is improvised, or created spontaneously, music played by big bands is highly "arranged", or prepared in advance and notated on sheet music. The music is traditionally called 'charts'. Improvised solos may be played only when called for by the arranger.
There are two distinct periods in the history of popular bands. Beginning in the mid-1920s, big bands, then typically consisting of 10–25 pieces, came to dominate popular music. At that time they usually played a form of jazz that involved very little improvisation, which included a string section with violins, which was dropped after the introduction of swing in 1935. A few bands also had violas and cellos, usually one or two along with them. The dance form of jazz was characterized by a sweet and romantic melody. Orchestras tended to stick to the melody as it was written and vocals would be sung (often in a tenor voice) and in tune with the melody.
Sammy is a nickname, frequently for people with the name Samuel, and also an English spelling of the Arabic name Sami. It is also occasionally found as a surname.
The Soldier or The Soldiers may refer to:
William James "Count" Basie (August 21, 1904 – April 26, 1984) was an American jazz pianist, organist, bandleader, and composer. His mother taught him to play the piano and he started performing in his teens. Dropping out of school, he learned to operate lights for vaudeville and to improvise accompaniment for silent films at a local movie theater in his home town of Red Bank, New Jersey. By 16 he increasingly played jazz piano at parties, resorts and other venues. In 1924 he went to Harlem, where his performing career expanded; he toured with groups to the major jazz cities of Chicago, St. Louis and Kansas City. In 1929 he joined Bennie Moten's band in Kansas City, and played with them until Moten's death in 1935.
That year Basie formed his own jazz orchestra, and in 1936 took them to Chicago for a long engagement and their first recording. He led the group for almost 50 years, creating innovations like the use of two "split" tenor saxophones, emphasizing the rhythm section, riffing with a big band, using arrangers to broaden their sound, and others. Many musicians came to prominence under his direction, including the tenor saxophonists Lester Young and Herschel Evans, the guitarist Freddie Green, trumpeters Buck Clayton and Harry "Sweets" Edison and singers Jimmy Rushing and Joe Williams. Basie's theme songs were "One O'Clock Jump", developed in 1935 in the early days of his band, and later "April in Paris".

“The Hip Music Box” is a great example of Sammy’s never-ending quest to innovate arranging and composing in the big band idiom. “I had an idea for a tune where the big band would start and end sounding like a small toy orchestra, but in the middle would sound like a regular big band.” The introduction and ending of the arrangement includes some special effects, and also uses a special drum set to get the sound of a toy orchestra. Long before the legendary Sammy Nestico was arranging music for acclaimed artists such as Count Basie and Quincy Jones, he served as the Chief Arranger for the United States Marine Band. Although his career with "The President's Own" was only five years, the legacy of his talent continues to grow. Conducted by Marine Band Director Colonel Michael J. Colburn, the Marine Band, Marine Chamber Orchestra, and Marine Dance Band will perform the Living History concert titled "Simply Sammy" at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 14, 2013, at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center at Northern Virginia Community College in Alexandria, Va. The program will feature music that Sammy arranged or composed while he was a Marine Band member. The concert is free and no tickets are required.
For an alto saxophone feature, Sammy chose Johnny Mandel’s “Close Enough For Love.” “The melody of this tune is so pretty,” writes Sammy, “I knew it was perfect for this album. I think Johnny Mandel is the prettiest arranger in the world. I try and do a Johnny Mandel composition on all of my albums.” The melody is stated in a slow ballad feel, and the arrangement includes a short double time section to feature the soloists’ improvisational abilities. Sammy recalls having loved this older tune for years, and also remembers Count Basie doing a new composition based on the original chord changes. This chart really showcases Sammy's softer side, utilizing muted brass sections and low dynamics, but then ends with a roaring shout section in the classic Nestico style. This chart is a flugelhorn feature, and begins in a bossa nova feel. To prevent the air of predictability, Sammy changed the end of the song to a waltz feel. “I don’t want to write predictable music. Originally entitled “The Number You Have Reached Has Been Disconnected. If You Think This Is An Error, Hang Up and Dial Again,” Sammy decided the title was too long, finally settling on “Cell Talk.” The piece incorporates flute, piccolo, and xylophone, and effects that sound like a cell phone recur throughout. Written just weeks before the recording session, “Cell Talk” is a great example of Sammy’s lifelong dedication to composing new music. Dick Cully and his Big Band perform Sammy Nestico's great arrangement 'Ya Gotta Try' written for Count Basie and his Orchestra and the closer for being the opening act for Toni Tennile at Old School Square Historic Arts Center Delray Beach, Florida. I've heard so many renditions of my music that I was disappointed in. I worked shortly with Gene Krupa, and I wrote a couple of things for Buddy Rich ... making it another thing we have in common. Sammy’s arrangement of this Erskine Hawkins composition features the band in a gospel setting. After hearing a version of this tune by the great organist Shirley Scott, Sammy decided to arrange it as an organ feature. “Each one of the tunes on this recording has a distinct personality, and this one definitely does.
