Busselton Jetty is the longest wooden jetty (pier) in the southern hemisphere, stretching almost 2 km out to sea from the town of Busselton, Western Australia. Because the shallow waters of Geographe Bay restricted ship movement, a long jetty was required so that cut timber could be transported to ships.
The jetty construction commenced in 1853 and the first section was opened in 1865. The jetty was extended numerous times until the 1960s, ultimately reaching a length of 1841 m. The last commercial vessel called at the jetty in 1971 and the jetty was closed the following year. It passed into the control of Busselton Shire and has been gradually restored and improved since. The jetty has survived Cyclone Alby in 1978, borers, weathering, several fires, and the threat of demolition to become a major regional tourist attraction.
The jetty features a rail line along its length, a relic of the railway line into Busselton from Bunbury. The line now carries tourists along the jetty to an underwater observatory which opened to the public in 2003.
Born in 1865 and standing at 1841 meters long, the Busselton Jetty is a regional icon. The survival of this structure through cyclone Alby, fire and hardship is a credit to the community of Busselton and the dedication of volunteer work & fundraisers. It now has an underwater observatory and a train service to get you all the way to the end! Make sure you visit this living piece of Australian history. www.busseltonjetty.com.au Video by www.tourvision.com.au
So it was our last stop of our trip down the WA coast and what i perfect last stop....Busselton Jetty. I set the drone up on about 50% battery and sent it straight down the jetty that is nearly 2KM long, it got down there so quickly, i didnt even take notice of the speed it got there in or the wind conditions as it was such a beautiful site to see, but just as i got to the end and swooped round to head back i noticed that it wasn't coming back at normal speed at all...it was dead slow...this is when the panic kicked in and we realised that it was fighting the winds out there. With no time to think about options i knew this drone was not going to make it back. I ditched the controller into my brothers lap (who had only flown once and never landed) and headed off the beach for the jetty. ...

Experience the depths of Geographe Bay with Underwater Videographer Shannon Conway as he dives from the famous Busselton Jetty.
On our trip around W.A. we visited Busselton Jetty and its underwater observatory. The observatory was eight metres below the jetty and it was a wonderful experience to see the schools of different fish down there. The jetty itself is the longest wooden jetty in the Southern Hemisphere.
Tim and Pete head to the local Busselton Jetty, which was built back in 1865, so it's been a an icon of the town for quite some time now. It was originally used as a commercial port, and was the main port for the South West until 1972. It's the longest timber pile jetty in the Southern hemisphere - 1.841 kilometres long and 1 nautical mile long. At the end of the peer is an underwater observatory so you can experience the bottom of the sea bed and a train takes tourists to the end of the jetty.
Perth Scuba divers visited the iconic Busselton Jetty, Western Australia and dived next to the underwater observatory. This is what they found on their 90 minute dive of the jetty on Sunday 15 March 2015. Filmed with GoPro HERO3 with Shallow Water Flip Filter.

The Perth Scuba Crew dived the Busselton Jetty to check out what had happened to the marine environment after commercial divers had scraped off the marine growth and wrapped the timber pylons. It's distressing to see the affect that removing this growth has on the marine life that surrounds this tourist attraction. Whilst we all want to maintain the safety and structural integrity of the jetty, perhaps future works could be coordinated with volunteers to reattach growth, kick starting the re-growth process which will take 20-30 years. More pylons are scheduled to be scraped and wrapped in the future to protect the jetty structural integrity. We look forward to consultation with environmental groups so we can come up with a great outcome for the jetty structure, tourism and the marine envir...
