Plot: In 1865, as the American Civil War winds inexorably toward conclusion, U.S. president Abraham Lincoln endeavors to achieve passage of the landmark constitutional amendment which will forever ban slavery from the United States. However, his task is a race against time, for peace may come at any time, and if it comes before the amendment is passed, the returning southern states will stop it before it can become law. Lincoln must, by almost any means possible, obtain enough votes from a recalcitrant Congress before peace arrives and it is too late. Yet the president is torn, as an early peace would save thousands of lives. As the nation confronts its conscience over the freedom of its entire population, Lincoln faces his own crisis of conscience -- end slavery or end the war.

I am an atheist; I am not a member of any clergy or a member/parishioner of any church, religious group, or other faith-based organization. Nonetheless I think that the non-religious have just as much right to representation as the religious. However I do periodically hold atheist discussion meetings at my residence where we discuss religious issues.

Schools can make or break a community. As a parent of two children who go to our local public schools, I want to ensure that the
Neighborhood Council addresses the critical role of public education in the fabric of our community.
I have served for two years on the Council as the
Parks and Recreation Representative, and served on the
Education Committee, Outreach Committee, Website Ad-hoc Committee, and
Community Survey Ad-hoc Committee. I advocate passionately for an
Atwater Village that remains inclusive, family-friendly (for *all* kinds of families!), and community-oriented.

John Ciulik - North Atwater Representative Candidate
Hi. My name is
John Ciulik and I am running for the seat of
North Atwater
Representative on the
Atwater Village Neighborhood Council Board of Governors. As a 12 year property owner in Atwater Village, and a previously serving Neighborhood Council Representative (2011-2013), I have had the privilege of enjoying the changes to Atwater Village as a passive supporter and enacting change as an active board participant.
I believe volunteer service is the backbone of any neighborhood. I would be honored if allowed the opportunity to again serve this wonderful and unique community as one of your North Atwater Representatives and take on an expanded role in the next wave of forward progress.

Over the past several months we have worked with an outside land-use consultant in the initial stages of developing the Community Plan, and are now seeking seed-funding from the AVNC to formally engage the consultant. wn.com/Erin O'Brien South Atwater Representative Candidate
I became an
Atwater Village resident in 2004 when I purchased my home on Perlita Ave. I was drawn to the neighborhood feel of the area, the walk-ability to businesses and it's calming, tree lined streets.
It's been a thrill to watch the changes over the last 12 years and with so many projects on the horizon, I want to be a part of continued thoughtful changes and progress that enhances what makes Atwater Village unique in
Los Angeles.
Some of you may know me from my over-the-top
Halloween decorations and awesome loot (pencils, candy, tattoos, bracelets!), my mechanical elves and
Santa at
Christmas time, or cruising the neighborhood on foot or my
Burner bike. I look forward to meeting more of my neighbors and listening to your voices and input on our special village.
Of particular interest to me are our green spaces, the future of the river development and increasing safety on our streets, in particular
Fletcher, and along the bike path.

Mario Cardenas - Faith Based Organization Representative Candidate
Hi, my name is
Mario Cardenas, and I have been serving on the
Atwater Village Neighborhood Council (AVNC) since
2010, and as the
Church and
Religious Representative (now called Faith-Based
Organizations Representative) since
2012. I am the
Chair of the Events Committee. Over the last six years, I have helped to plan, and participated in the
Summer Movie Nights, Nights on the
Boulevard, the
Tree Lighting
Festival, and
Trick or Treat on the BOOlevard (I am usually walking around in costume as part of the
Star Wars group).
I was born and raised in
Los Angeles. I am a proud graduate of
Cathedral High School, and
Azusa Pacific University. I am a registered parishioner of
Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
If re-elected, I want to continue assisting in the effort to improve our community, and promote more business in Atwater Village. I want to help preserve the small family home feel of Atwater Village, and discourage Small Lot Ordinance development.
Thank you in advance for your vote.

Karen Knapp - Central Atwater Representative Candidate
I've served two terms as the
Central Atwater
Representative, and I am currently the
Board Secretary as well. I'm a member of three committees:
Community Greening;
Communications and Outreach;
Public Safety, and I'm the
Chair of the Website Committee.
Having this experience is a plus for the
Council, since there a big learning curve to understanding the workings of
City government and
Neighborhood Council rules.
Being a
Board Member, and working with our neighbors, has been rewarding, interesting and often inspiring. I'm proud to have been a part of an organization that has had an impact on helping our community. We've funded a wide variety of neighborhood projects, participated in local events and developed relationships with
City officials. I'm eager to continue to work to keep our 'village' as unique as it is.
