The Associated Construction Services (ACS) has set up a plant at 5th Avenue, Bartica that can produce 300 tonnes of asphalt daily, resulting in more local construction and maintenance projects, which also translates to more work for locals. The $150M investment was commissioned on Saturday by Minister of Social Cohesion, Amna Ally; Public Infrastructure Jnr Minister, Annette Ferguson, and proprietor of ACS, Peter Lewis.
Also present were Region Seven Chairman, Gordon Bradford; Mayor of Bartica, Gifford Marshal and other regional and municipal representatives.
Minister Ally at the launching assured residents of the administration’s commitment to assist the region in leveraging their natural and human resources for the town’s development. She also promised that the crucial investment by ACS would be one of several to come that would speak to strategically positioning the town of Bartica for enhanced economic development.
Minister Ferguson in applauding the “timely investment” said her government has committed to ensuring all-weather roads in the hinterland and noted that with the asphalt plant being situated in Bartica, will see many road projects moving from loam, DBST (Double Bituminous Surface Treatment), with asphalt roads becoming a reality. She added that this would aid in the elimination of environmental pollution and residents being affected by dust. It will also result in the reduction of cost associated with getting asphalt material to Region Seven, she said.
This is the second asphalt plant set up by ACS, in a show of corporate support. In 2014, the company invested more than $100 million in the establishment of a modern asphalt plant in Tarlogie Village, Corentyne Berbice.

President David Granger; First Lady, Sandra Granger; Minister of State, Joseph Harmon; Minister of Social Cohesion, Amna Ally; Minister of Public Health, Dr. George Norton; Minister of Communities, Ronald Bulkan; Minister of Social Protection, Volda Lawrence; parliamentarians, mayors of the other towns and other dignitaries were in attendance.
The event began with a military march pass parade at First Avenue, Bartica, followed by interfaith prayers, a wreath laying ceremony and the official township declaration by the Head of State, President David Granger. He said that the community of Bartica, being one of the oldest in Guyana, is most deserving of township status.
President Granger also stated that Bartica has a very personal place in his heart. He explains why.
Bartica, Mr. Granger further stated, is a well-laid out community with its avenues and its streets. Bartica possesses everything that it needs to be a capital. Bartica, Essequibo, is a town on the left bank of the Essequibo River in Cuyuni-Mazaruni (Region 7), at the confluence of the Cuyuni and Mazaruni Rivers with the Essequibo River in Guyana. Considered the "Gateway to the Interior", the town has a population of about 15,000 and is the launching point for people who work in the bush, mining gold and diamonds.
History
Bartica developed from an Anglican missionary settlement, established in 1842. The name 'Bartica' comes from an Amerindian word meaning 'red earth', abundant in the area.
Education
Bartica has two secondary school Bartica Secondary and Three Miles Secondary and three primary schools, St. Anthony's Primary and St. John-the-Baptist and Two Miles Primary. There are several other primary schools in the surrounding riverine communities.
Health
The region 7 hospital is located in Bartica and is known for having implemented the country’s first Health Information System in 2005, developed by Peace Corps volunteers Geoffrey Thompson and Jason Knueppel.

President David Granger; First Lady, Sandra Granger; Minister of State, Joseph Harmon; Minister of Social Cohesion, Amna Ally; Minister of Public Health, Dr. George Norton; Minister of Communities, Ronald Bulkan; Minister of Social Protection, Volda Lawrence; parliamentarians, mayors of the other towns and other dignitaries were in attendance. The event began with a military march pass parade at First Avenue, Bartica, followed by interfaith prayers, a wreath laying ceremony and the official township declaration by the Head of State, President David Granger. He said that the community of Bartica, being one of the oldest in Guyana, is most deserving of township status. President Granger also stated that Bartica has a very personal place in his heart.
