Like the title says, I broke the index finger on my right hand last Thanksgiving. In fact, I fractured it so badly that the surgeon who inserted the pins had to do the reduction on it without cutting the finger open. He said there were so many little fractured pieces that it would have been "like opening a beehive." The best part? I make my living typing (as part of my own freelance web design and internet marketing/promotions/SEO business). And not only am I right handed, I am ridiculously right handed. My left hand might as well be a crab claw.
Oh well, at least I got a semi-amusing video out of the deal. The ER staff told me I was the most polite patient they had seen all night and actually seemed to enjoy the fact I was documenting my epic failure for the amusement of those on the internet. I got asked about my Silverladder shirt a lot. So, SL folks, the staff at Paradise Valley Hospitals ER says hi.
The end result of this fracture was months of physical therapy and the acquisition of a brand new level of patience. Learning to do everything from eating to dressing to opening jars with one hand takes time.

The index finger, (also referred to as forefinger, pointer finger, trigger finger, digitus secundus, digitus II, and many other terms), is the first finger and the second digit of a human hand. It is located between the first and third digits, between the thumb and the middle finger. It is usually the most dextrous and sensitive finger of the hand, though not the longest – it is shorter than the middle finger, and may be shorter or longer than the ring finger – see digit ratio.
"Index finger" literally means "pointing finger", from the same Latin source as indicate; its anatomical names are either "index finger" or "second digit".
A lone index finger held vertically is often used to represent the number 1, or when held up or moved side to side (finger-wagging), it can be an admonitory gesture. With the hand held palm out and the thumb and middle fingers touching, it represents the letter d in the American Sign Language alphabet. In sports, it can also represent victory, as some championship-winning teams raise their index finger (often saying "We're number one!") while posing for a championship team photo – oversized foam hands with a single upraised index are also used for this purpose; compare with the victory sign. For the vast majority of computer users is the finger uses to click a mouse as well as finger used in the untrained 'hunt and run' Typing style.
