Edinburgh (i/ˈɛdɪnbərə/;Scottish Gaelic: Dùn Èideann [ˈt̪uːn ˈɛːtʲɛn̪ˠ]) is the capital city of Scotland, located in Lothian on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth. It is the second most populous city in Scotland and the seventh most populous in the United Kingdom. The most recent official population estimates are 464,990 for the city of Edinburgh itself and 492,680 for the local authority area. Edinburgh lies at the heart of the Edinburgh & South East Scotland City region with a population in 2014 of 1,339,380. Recognised as the capital of Scotland since at least the 15th century, Edinburgh is home to the Scottish Parliament and the seat of the monarchy in Scotland. The city is also the annual venue of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland and home to national institutions such as the National Museum of Scotland, the National Library of Scotland and the Scottish National Gallery. It is the largest financial centre in the UK after London.
A planned community, or planned city, is any community that was carefully planned from its inception and is typically constructed in a previously undeveloped area. This contrasts with settlements that evolve in a more ad hoc fashion. Land use conflicts are less frequent in planned communities since they are planned carefully. The term new town refers to planned communities of the new towns movement in particular, mainly in the United Kingdom. It was also common in the European colonization of the Americas to build according to a plan either on fresh ground or on the ruins of earlier Amerindian cities.
Several of the world's capital cities are planned cities, including Canberra in Australia, Brasília in Brazil, Belmopan in Belize, New Delhi in India, Valletta in Malta, Abuja in Nigeria, Astana in Kazakhstan, Naypyidaw in Burma, Islamabad in Pakistan and Washington, D.C., in the United States. In Egypt, a new capital city east of Cairo has been proposed. The federal administrative centre of Malaysia, Putrajaya, is also a planned city.

The Royal Botanic Garden of Edinburgh sits just to the north of the New Town and can be entered at the Warriston gate.

250 years ago, Edinburgh launched a competition to design a 'New Town' for the Scottish capital. The city desperately needed an upgrade - it was overcrowded, filthy and crumbling. With Scotland a partner in the new United Kingdom, it needed a capital to be proud of. At the same time, Edinburgh was seen as the intellectual capital of Europe - with Adam Smith, David Hume and other figures of the 'Scottish Enlightenment' creating an explosion of creative ideas that would change the world. The winning plan by James Craig was a masterpiece of Georgian city planning that reflected these Enlightenment ideas. This film tells the story of how the plan was made real - becoming the most ambitious building project in Britain, and transforming Edinburgh into the most perfect Georgian city on Earth.
Description A montage of music and images of Edinburgh. A walk by Dion Magyar from Waverly Station to the New Town, Grassmarket, Castle, Royal Mile, Holyrood Palace.
See http://www.landscapearchitecture.org.uk/landscape-urbanism-and-architecture-in-the-design-of-edinburgh-new-town/ James Craig's design for Edinburgh New Town is a brilliant illustration of how to base urban design on the principles of landscape architecture. The landscape was designed before the architecture, using an approach which would not be called landscape urbanism.
This segment explains the purpose and establishement of one of Edinburgh's most prestigious areas.
Edinburgh has been the Scottish capital since the 15th century. It has two distinct areas: the Old Town, dominated by a medieval fortress; and the neoclassical New Town, whose development from the 18th century onwards had a far-reaching influence on European urban planning. The harmonious juxtaposition of these two contrasting historic areas, each with many important buildings, is what gives the city its unique character. Charlotte Square houses some of the most beautiful Georgian buildings in the city. These date back to the late 1700's. The north side of the square is home to Bute House which is the official residence of Scotland's First Minister in the Country's Devolved Parliament. The New Town was conceived as a result of a competition for a design to ease the overcrowded conditions suffered by the residents down from the castle. It became the place for the wealthy to stay - probably still is. The general layout of the original group of buildings was to have a large square at each end of a long street. Today there are many "extra" streets added but the original "Charlotte Square" joined by "George Street" to "St Andrews Square" still exists. A parallel street to the north is "Queen Street" whi...
https://www.expedia.com/Edinburgh.d6069845.Destination-Travel-Guides The Scottish capital of Edinburgh is one of the world’s most beautiful cities. Its Old Town and Royal Mile are filled with the ghosts of medieval merchants, body snatchers, and poets, while its Georgian-styled New Town shines with the glories of the Scottish Enlightenment. To see Edinburgh in all her glory, climb to Arthur’s Seat, the highest of the city’s seven peaks. Some historians believe this was the site of King Arthur’s legendary castle Camelot. Nearby, on another volcanic crag, rises Edinburgh Castle, the very symbol of Scotland itself. Over the last eleven centuries, this castle has been laid siege to 26 times but still it stands, a testimony to the indomitable spirit of the Scots. Edinburgh has long held...
Edinburgh, a city that is often mispronounced by first time visitors, was the first city we visited on our adventure tour around Scotland. Flying in all the way from Bangkok to visit Edinburgh for the New Year's Celebration of Hogmany was a fitting way for us to end 2013 and celebrate 2014. Having had a taste of Europe earlier on in the year in the form of visiting Finland, Estonia and Bulgaria we were thrilled to have the opportunity to come and visit Scotland's culture capital (Edinburgh) for the first time during the most festive time of the year. Vacation travel video about destination Edinburgh in Scotland. In the centre of the old town, Edinburgh Castle sits atop the basalt cone of a long-extinct volcano. It is the most visited castle in Scotland and still guarded by soldiers but it is now mainly tourists who storm the defiant rock. Northumbrian king, Edwin, commanded the castle to be built in the seventh century A.D., the "castle on the hill", Edinburgh. The Royal Mile leads from the mighty fortress, downwards, a sloping road from which narrow streets branch off. Just off the upper Royal Mile is the church and cemetery of Greyfriars with its many historical and atmospheric tombs. Its cemetery became well known due to two Irishmen who exhumed newly-buried corpses in 1827 in order to sell them to the local anatomical institute. The...

Emerald-green fields, hills covered by heather, sheep herds, lakes, beautiful castles and forts… This is Scotland, and of course the men wearing tartan, pipe music and whiskey. The character of the country on the Northern part of the British island can not be missed. Because of their monument status, the castle of Edinburgh and 16 thousand other buildings are under protection. During the summer, several festivals and cultural events here and in Glasgow await the visitors. The old castles, forts and monasteries tell us about a long and eventful past and such heroes as Wallace ‘The Braveheart’ or Rob Roy. Their deeds were sung by such Scottish poets and writers as Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson or Robert Burns. Scotland is famous of its Celtic monuments, the beautiful landscape of ...

Princes Street is one of the major thoroughfares in central Edinburgh, Scotland, and its main shopping street. It is the southernmost street of Edinburgh's New Town, stretching around 1 mile (1.6 km) from Lothian Road in the west to Leith Street in the east. The street is mostly closed to private cars, with public transport given priority. The street has virtually no buildings on the south side, allowing panoramic views of the Old Town, Edinburgh Castle, and the valley between. Only the east end of the street is open to all traffic. The bulk of the street is limited to trams, buses and taxis.

Oft w...
