Prince William and Kate help elderly Lord Lieutenant to his feet after he takes a tumble
Prince William came to the rescue today after Lord Lieutenant Jonathan Douglas Hughes took a tumble during an official visit to Essex. The Duchess of Cambridge was promoting the Heads Together campaign with her husband and took a tour of the Stewards Academy in Harlow to see how young people are dealing with life's pressures. But as the couple arrived and stepped out of their car, the Vice Lord Lieutenant of Essex took a rather nasty tumble. Nearly 25 Cadets and reservists from Greater Manchester have had their exceptional work honoured by being presented a Lord-Lieutenant's award. Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant's represent the Crown for each county in the UK, and the annual ceremony is not only a way of celebrating Cadet achievements, but also Cadet force adult volunteers and permanent staff who assist in the Reserves.

RAF Linton-on-Ouse played host to the Lord-Lieutenant for North Yorkshire at a very important ceremony last week, which saw the prestigious appointment of the Lord-Lieutenant's Cadet awarded to three cadets from the region.
The highest honour in the cadets, the Lord-Lieutenant's award was presented to Leading Cadet Ben Robinson, 16, from Scarborough, Staff Sergeant Alex James, 17, from Thirsk and Sergeant Jordan Madeley, 17, from Harrogate by Lord Crathorne, Lord-Lieutenant for North Yorkshire.
An enthusiastic member of the Harrogate Squadron, Jordan has participated in all aspects of the Air Cadets, contributing not only to his squadron, but also its work within the community, fundraising for charities such as the RAFA Wings Appeal and the Royal British Legion as well as volunteering his services at the local hospital. A great role model for his peers and new cadets, Jordan leads by example and constantly strives to achieve success for the squadron and himself. This was most recently manifested in winning 'Best Drill' at the Wing Training Day, beating off stiff competition from 27 other squadrons. Jordan also won the prestigious Royal Air Forces Association (Northern Area) Young Person of the Year Award. This high standard is reflected in everything he does, whether it's helping to develop new cadets, participating in training or supporting his local community, and is all undertaken with an easy, pleasant and confident demeanour.
Jordan, who attends St Aidan's C of E High School, said: "I originally joined cadets because my brother and father were a part of the ATC. As soon as I stepped into the uniform I felt very proud to be an air cadet and it gives me great sense of honour when I think of the importance of this award. I'd like to thank my parents and my family for always being there to support me during my cadet career, and to be a personal taxi occasionally, as well as all the staff from my wing and squadron, especially Sergeant Foster and Flight Lieutenant Dewhurst for helping me in every aspect of cadets."

Sean Hyland from Heworth, and Rob Ducat from Tadcaster, has been awarded the Lord-Lieutenant's Certificate -- an achievement recognised as one of the highest honours in the forces, ranking just below the MBE.
The certificate was presented to Colour Sergeant Hyland by Lord Crathorne, Lord-Lieutenant for North Yorkshire, at a private ceremony held at Ousefield House in York on 20th March, in recognition of his outstanding contribution and dedication to the Army reserve.
Sean Hyland, as the Company Quartermaster for 4th Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment, regularly performs above and beyond the call of duty, often working unpaid and even involving family members to help out when short-staffed to ensure the Regiment's functions and events are run with the same standards of high quality that everyone has come to admire. Always performing his duties with professional, determined but also infectiously cheerful demeanour, Sean is considered the best Company Quartermaster in the Battalion -- a feat even the more remarkable when it is considered that all the other sub units have two people to do his job. His commitment, dedication and devotion to the unit and its success is exceptional and he is an inspiration to those around him.
Of his award, Sean said: "I feel very honoured and humbled to have received this award. It is a privilege to be among other such well-deserving recipients."
Colonel Snagge, Chief Executive of the Reserve Forces' and Cadets' Association (RFCA) in Yorkshire and The Humber, which runs the Lord-Lieutenant's Certificates Awards, added: "Without the selfless commitment of many hundreds of volunteers across the region who give up their time outside of working hours, the reserve forces and cadet organisations simply couldn't exist. I am delighted that Sean's service has been commemorated in this way and I have no doubt he will continue to make a great difference to the Army Reserve."
Colonel Snagge also appealed for more adult volunteers to support the region's 5,400 cadets: "The cadet movement is one of the most prestigious youth organisations in the world, and its popularity means we need more adult instructors to lead the cadets and deliver the quality of experiences, adventure and community projects which our cadets enjoy. We would love to hear from people who are willing to offer their time and enthusiasm to join our ranks as an Adult Instructor -- no military experience is needed."
Sean was among only ten people in North Yorkshire to be awarded the Lord-Lieutenant's Certificate, which is presented as a mounted scroll.

Three talented teenage Cadets, Sergeant Jacob Porter, from Scagglethorpe, Malton, Megan Williams from Filey and Flight Sergeant Sarah Owens from Filey Boroughbridge have been awarded the prestigious appointment of Lord-Lieutenant's Cadet -- an achievement recognised as the highest honour in the Cadets -- in recognition of his outstanding service in the Army Cadet Force (ACF
The certificate was presented by Lord Crathorne, Lord-Lieutenant for North Yorkshire, at a ceremony held at the Cadet Training Centre in Strensall, York, on the 20th September. The accolade means these cadets now hold the position of Lord Lieutenant's Cadet for North Yorkshire.
Reflecting on the ceremony and his new role as ambassador for the cadets in North Yorkshire,
Jacob, who attends Norton Sixth Form, said: "I feel very honoured to get this award, especially given my brother, Benjamin Porter, was chosen last year! He was the reason I joined Cadets in the first place and it changed my life. I have enjoyed some fantastic experiences and great achievements, whether that's First Aid and BTEC Diplomas or learning fieldcraft, going on camps and passing the Seniors Cadet Instructors Course. I'd like thank my detachment Commander CSM Dave Richardson for being there supporting me throughout my cadet career and helping me to achieve what I could never have imagined before joining the Cadets."
Megan, who attends Scarborough Sixth Form, said: "Receiving this award has got to be the best moment of my life -- I'm just speechless. It's made me realise that when you are dedicated to something, you can achieve things that you thought were beyond your wildest dreams. I never thought I would achieve something as great as this. I would just like to thank the staff of Filey Sea Cadets for supporting me throughout my cadet career and for giving me this opportunity."
Sarah, who attends Ripon Grammar School, said: "I joined the Air Cadets so that I could experience new challenges and find out about military life, and I've achieved things I never thought possible. But I had no idea that I would achieve such a prestigious award as this. I'm absolutely delighted to represent 886 (City of Ripon) Squadron and Central and East Yorkshire Wing ATC as the Lord Lieutenant's Cadet."
Jacob, Megan and Sarah were three of only 12 cadets -- selected from a total of 5,400 cadets across the whole Yorkshire and Humber region -- to be awarded the Lord Lieutenant's Certificate, which is presented as a mounted scroll. All cadets are between 10 and 18 years of age and can be part of the Sea Cadet Corps, Army Cadet Force or Air Training Corps .

Lord Lieutenant
The Lord Lieutenant (/lɛfˈtɛnənt/) is the Queen's personal representative in each county of the United Kingdom. Historically the Lord Lieutenant was responsible for organising the county's militia, but it is today a largely ceremonial position, usually awarded to a retired notable, military officer, nobleman, or businessman in the county. The office can be considered viceregal, but not equivalent to that of a Lieutenant Governor in the Crown Dependencies, a Governor in the Overseas Territories or (until 1972) the Governor of Northern Ireland, as Lords Lieutenant have virtually no role in local government, nor are they responsible for promulgating local ordinances in the monarch's name.

Lieutenants were first appointed to a number of English counties by King Henry VIII in the 1540s, when the military functions of the sheriff were handed over to him. He raised and was responsible for the efficiency of the local militia units of the county, and afterwards of the yeomanry, and volunteers. He was commander of these forces, whose officers he appointed. These commissions were originally of temporary duration, and only when the situation required the local militia to be specially supervised and well prepared; often where invasion by Scotland or France might be expected.

Three talented teenage Cadets, Sergeant Jacob Porter, from Scagglethorpe, Malton, Megan Williams from Filey and Flight Sergeant Sarah Owens from Filey Boroughbridge have been awarded the prestigious appointment of Lord-Lieutenant's Cadet -- an achievement recognised as the highest honour in the Cadets -- in recognition of his outstanding service in the Army Cadet Force (ACF The certificate was presented by Lord Crathorne, Lord-Lieutenant for North Yorkshire, at a ceremony held at the Cadet Training Centre in Strensall, York, on the 20th September. The accolade means these cadets now hold the position of Lord Lieutenant's Cadet for North Yorkshire. Reflecting on the ceremony and his new role as ambassador for the cadets in North Yorkshire, Jacob, who attends Norton Sixth Form, said: "I feel very honoured to get this award, especially given my brother, Benjamin Porter, was chosen last year! He was the reason I joined Cadets in the first place and it changed my life. I have enjoyed some fantastic experiences and great achievements, whether that's First Aid and BTEC Diplomas or learning fieldcraft, going on camps and passing the Seniors Cadet Instructors Course. I'd like thank my detachment Commander CSM Dave Richardson for being there supporting me throughout my cadet career and helping me to achieve what I could never have imagined before joining the Cadets." Megan, who attends Scarborough Sixth Form, said: "Receiving this award has got to be the best moment of my life -- I'm just speechless. It's made me realise that when you are dedicated to something, you can achieve things that you thought were beyond your wildest dreams. I never thought I would achieve something as great as this. I would just like to thank the staff of Filey Sea Cadets for supporting me throughout my cadet career and for giving me this opportunity." Sarah, who attends Ripon Grammar School, said: "I joined the Air Cadets so that I could experience new challenges and find out about military life, and I've achieved things I never thought possible. But I had no idea that I would achieve such a prestigious award as this. I'm absolutely delighted to represent 886 (City of Ripon) Squadron and Central and East Yorkshire Wing ATC as the Lord Lieutenant's Cadet." Jacob, Megan and Sarah were three of only 12 cadets -- selected from a total of 5,400 cadets across the whole Yorkshire and Humber region -- to be awarded the Lord Lieutenant's Certificate, which is presented as a mounted scroll. All cadets are between 10 and 18 years of age and can be part of the Sea Cadet Corps, Army Cadet Force or Air Training Corps . -

The highest honour in the cadets, the Lord-Lieutenant's award was presented to Leading Cadet Ben Robinson, 16, from Scarborough, Staff Sergeant Alex James, 17, from Thirsk and Sergeant Jordan Madeley, 17, from Harrogate by Lord Crathorne, Lord-Lieutenant for North Yorkshire.
An enthusiastic member of the Harrogate Squadron, Jordan has participated in all aspects of the Air Cadets, contributing not only to his squadron, but also its work within the community, fundraising for charities such as the RAFA Wings Appeal and the Royal British Legion as well as volunteering his services at the local hospital. A great role model for his peers and new cadets, Jordan leads by example and constantly strives to achieve success for the squadron and himself. This was most recently manifested in winning 'Best Drill' at the Wing Training Day, beating off stiff competition from 27 other squadrons. Jordan also won the prestigious Royal Air Forces Association (Northern Area) Young Person of the Year Award. This high standard is reflected in everything he does, whether it's helping to develop new cadets, participating in training or supporting his local community, and is all undertaken with an easy, pleasant and confident demeanour.
Jordan, who attends St Aidan's C of E High School, said: "I originally joined cadets because my brother and father were a part of the ATC. As soon as I stepped into the uniform I felt very proud to be an air cadet and it gives me great sense of honour when I think of the importance of this award. I'd like to thank my parents and my family for always being there to support me during my cadet career, and to be a personal taxi occasionally, as well as all the staff from my wing and squadron, especially Sergeant Foster and Flight Lieutenant Dewhurst for helping me in every aspect of cadets."

Colonel Snagge also appealed for more adult volunteers to support the region's 5,400 cadets: "The cadet movement is one of the most prestigious youth organisations in the world, and its popularity means we need more adult instructors to lead the cadets and deliver the quality of experiences, adventure and community projects which our cadets enjoy. We would love to hear from people who are willing to offer their time and enthusiasm to join our ranks as an Adult Instructor -- no military experience is needed."

But the Vice Lord Lieutenant fell to the ground with a thud shortly after the couple got out of their car. William rushed to help the stricken official, who got up looking somewhat embarrassed and later seemed fine. William and Kate arrived at windswept Stewards Academy in Harlow, Essex, to discuss how young people cope with issues such as starting a new school this morning.

Three talented teenage Cadets, Sergeant Jacob Porter, from Scagglethorpe, Malton, Megan Williams from Filey and Flight Sergeant Sarah Owens from Filey Boroughbridge have been awarded the prestigious appointment of Lord-Lieutenant's Cadet -- an achievement recognised as the highest honour in the Cadets -- in recognition of his outstanding service in the Army Cadet Force (ACF
The certificate was presented by Lord Crathorne, Lord-Lieutenant for North Yorkshire, at a ceremony held at the Cadet Training Centre in Strensall, York, on the 20th September. The accolade means these cadets now hold the position of Lord Lieutenant's Cadet for North Yorkshire.
Reflecting on the ceremony and his new role as ambassador for the cadets in North Yorkshire,
Jacob, who attends Norton Sixth Form, said: "I feel very honoured to get this award, especially given my brother, Benjamin Porter, was chosen last year! He was the reason I joined Cadets in the first place and it changed my life. I have enjoyed some fantastic experiences and great achievements, whether that's First Aid and BTEC Diplomas or learning fieldcraft, going on camps and passing the Seniors Cadet Instructors Course. I'd like thank my detachment Commander CSM Dave Richardson for being there supporting me throughout my cadet career and helping me to achieve what I could never have imagined before joining the Cadets."
Megan, who attends Scarborough Sixth Form, said: "Receiving this award has got to be the best moment of my life -- I'm just speechless. It's made me realise that when you are dedicated to something, you can achieve things that you thought were beyond your wildest dreams. I never thought I would achieve something as great as this. I would just like to thank the staff of Filey Sea Cadets for supporting me throughout my cadet career and for giving me this opportunity."
Sarah, who attends Ripon Grammar School, said: "I joined the Air Cadets so that I could experience new challenges and find out about military life, and I've achieved things I never thought possible. But I had no idea that I would achieve such a prestigious award as this. I'm absolutely delighted to represent 886 (City of Ripon) Squadron and Central and East Yorkshire Wing ATC as the Lord Lieutenant's Cadet."
Jacob, Megan and Sarah were three of only 12 cadets -- selected from a total of 5,400 cadets across the whole Yorkshire and Humber region -- to be awarded the Lord Lieutenant's Certificate, which is presented as a mounted scroll. All cadets are between 10 and 18 years of age and can be part of the Sea Cadet Corps, Army Cadet Force or Air Training Corps .
